News from Owensboro Public Schools
Message from the Superintendent
Dear OPS Family,
Tuesday, May 5, is National Teacher Appreciation Day.
Owensboro Public Schools join schools across the nation in thanking
teachers for what they do. Teachers do so much more than teach subject
matter and skills. They are role models, supporters, encouragers and much
more to our students.
We also want to thank all of our Support Personnel for the assistance they
provide to our students and teachers by creating an environment that supports
learning. Whether it is transporting children to and from school, feeding
them, maintaining facilities and equipment, supporting classroom instruction,
staffing an office, or coordinating resources beyond the classroom, their roles
are vital to our students and to the school system.
Sincerely,
Larry Vick
In months to come, we will be streaming a variety of video such as fine arts performances,
OHS graduation, and other special events.
Then, select an available video to view and select that link.
Because of the increased amount of production time necessary to render video segments for
the Web, not everything that appears on Channel 73 will be on the Web.
CATS/KCCT TESTING IS MAY 11-22
annual testing time again and we want every one of our students
to do his/her very best! Here are a few suggestions of things you,
as a parent, can do to help your child succeed during testing!
at least 8
hours before each test day.
Make sure your child eats a healthy breakfast the morning of each test either
at home or at school.
Ensure that your child is on time to school.
Schedule student a
conflict with the testing periods.
Be positive. Encourage your child to take the test seriously and do his or her
best.
Give words of encouragement as your child leaves for school each day.
After school, ask your child about his/her day of testing.

Encourage your child to listen carefully to instructions and to ask questions if
he/she does not understand.
A good attitude and diligent application are significant to their success. With your
support and encouragement, we are confident that our students will score well!!
This very funny, very touching play focuses on the lives of four young men with mental
challenges who live in a communal residence under the supervision of a sincere but
increasingly despairing social worker. Mingled with scenes from the daily lives of these four
where little things can become monumental and are often very funny, we see moments of
great poignancy and compassion and learn that all of us share the desire for love, laughter
and purpose in our lives.
This performance is even more special, as we are having the production screened by
members of the International Thespian Society. If selected, we will perform on the Main
Stage at the International Thespian Festival in June. Our production of Anatomy of Gray was
selected in 2006 and is still the only production from Kentucky to ever perform on the Main
Stage at Festival.
audience the night our screeners attend, so please join us if you can.
Preventative Measures Reduce Risk of Swine Flu
Green River District Health Department is closely monitoring the evolving situation related
to the potential swine flu outbreak. GRDHD leadership has stayed in close contact with Dr.
Hacker, Commissioner of Public Health, and the experts from the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC).
As of this publication (9:45 am, 4/27/09), there is NO SWINE FLU reported in Kentucky.
Public Health is asking citizens to take simple preventative measures to try to stay healthy.
Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue, your sleeve or material when you cough or
sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it and wash your hands.
Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze.
Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way!
Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
Influenza is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing
of infected people.
If you do get sick, the CDC and GRDHD recommends that you stay home from work
or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
