The OHS choral program will present our major work performance of the<br />

ESTES PTO SWEETS AND TREATS<br />
The Estes PTO is offering a “Sweets and Treats” sale twice a month beginning in<br />
<strong>Oct</strong>ober. The first sale will be on Friday, <strong>Oct</strong>ober 5, for nachos and popcorn. The<br />
next sale will be on Friday, <strong>Oct</strong>ober 19, for pickles and cotton candy.<br />
Please look for the order forms that will be sent home with students.<br />
Proceeds from the sales will be used to purchase materials and activities for our<br />
students. Thanks for your continued support of the Estes PTO!<br />
ESTES KINDERGARTEN HEALTH ASSESSMENT<br />
Kindergarten health assessments will be held on Friday, <strong>Oct</strong>ober 5. All<br />
kindergarten students will be assessed in the areas of strength, flexibility, and<br />
running.<br />
“GOT MUSIC”<br />
The 2 nd grade classes, together with the students in Ms. Janiak’s and Mr.<br />
Phillips’ classrooms, will celebrate music with our first program of the year on<br />
Tuesday, <strong>Oct</strong>ober 16 th , at 6:00 p.m. in the Estes gym. Everyone is invited to<br />
come and enjoy our “Got Music” program.<br />
ESTES NIGHT AT PAPA MURPHY’S<br />
The Estes PTO is partnering with Papa Murphy’s Pizza on Thursday,<br />
<strong>Oct</strong>ober 18 th , for a fundraising night. Stop by Papa Murphy’s (3211<br />
Frederica) between 2:00 and 7:00 p.m. and pick up something for<br />
dinner. A portion of the sales during that time will go to the Estes PTO.<br />

The Estes PTO is partnering with Zaxby’s restaurant on Tuesday, <strong>Oct</strong>ober 23, for a<br />

ESTES GRADE LEVEL NEWS<br />
Kindergarten: The kindergarten classes are going to Reid’s Orchard and Yellow Creek<br />
Park to learn about apples and to review the signs of fall that they see. Please send field trip<br />
money to school by <strong>Oct</strong>ober 15 th . The students are working hard on letter sounds and<br />
numbers. As the first quarter of school winds down, the students can see all the new things<br />
that they have learned and the new friends that they have made since the first day of school.<br />
1 st grade: The 1 st graders are learning about fall and working on fall-related art activities.<br />
They are learning more about beanie baby reading strategies and implementing them during<br />
read-to-self and partner reading. They continue to work hard every day following the Estes<br />
Guidelines for Success.<br />
2 nd grade: The 2 nd grade classes are going to the fire station this week. Please continue to<br />
have your children read at least 20 minutes each night and practice their math addition and<br />
subtraction facts during Fall Break.<br />
3 rd grade: The 3 rd grade students have been studying main idea and supporting details in<br />
reading, word problems using addition and subtraction in math, and capitalization,<br />

punctuation, and using commas in writing. Please make sure to sign up for a conference<br />
time. We look forward to meeting with you.<br />
4 th grade: The 4 th grade Luau cluster has been working hard to deserve that much needed<br />
Fall Break. In math, students are learning about multiplication facts. In reading, students are<br />
diving into author’s point of view. In writing, students are learning the rules of<br />
capitalization, ending punctuation and commas.<br />
3 rd /4 th grade: Ms. McLevaine’s 3 rd /4 th grade class has had an excellent first quarter,<br />
understanding how reading, writing, math, science, and social studies are studied not<br />
separately, but intertwined throughout their daily learning. And to assist in that learning, they<br />
are very appreciative of their new computers. After Fall Break, they will begin working with<br />
Ms. Julie White, using art activities to help in their study of <strong>Owensboro</strong> and Kentucky. A<br />
field trip is on their list of things to do as well, visiting the RiverPark Center to see “Rock the<br />
Presidents!”<br />
News from Foust Elementary School<br />
FOUST ARTIST<br />
Foust 3 rd grade student Lu Reh drew an amazing version of<br />
The Old Guitarist by Pablo Picasso. This was not traced, but<br />
he looked at the painting then did his own version. Foust<br />
students have been doing many different activities in their<br />
Art intervention groups.<br />
READING IS A TREAT<br />
<strong>Oct</strong>ober’s Foust Family Reading Night will be held on<br />
<strong>Oct</strong>ober 23 rd from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. in Foust’s Media<br />
Center. This evening is a time for families to spend quality<br />
time reading together. Students may take A.R. tests and have<br />
reading logs signed. Halloween-themed door prizes will be awarded and a small snack will<br />
be provided. Students will also be able to take home a free book. This event is provided by<br />
Foust 21st CCLC, FRC, and Title 1.<br />
MATH COOKIES!<br />
Students in Mrs. Stahler's class at Foust made<br />
polygon-shaped cookies as a conclusion of the<br />
month of September. Each month students study a<br />
different mathematical concept and celebrate the<br />
end of the month by doing a hands-on activity.<br />
September's calendar consisted of finding multiple<br />
patterns using 2D shapes. In addition to triangles,<br />
quadrilaterals, pentagons, and hexagons, students<br />
also learned about right, obtuse, and acute angles<br />
as well as congruent shapes. After baking,<br />
students devoured their gooey figures! Yum!<br />

TECHNOLOGY AND ART AT FOUST<br />
Students in Mr. Bridgmon’s computer class at Foust<br />
have been learning how to use technology in ‘paint’<br />
in order to celebrate the Fall Season. Grades 2-4 will<br />
expand on how to use Technology and integrate Art<br />
into their Special Computer instructional time<br />

SUTTON NIGHT AT McDONALD’S<br />
Pack up the family, invite the neighbors and join us for Sutton Night at<br />
McDonald’s (Wesleyan Park Plaza) on Tuesday, <strong>Oct</strong>ober 16 th , between<br />
4:00-7:00 p.m. A percentage of the sales during these hours will be donated<br />
to the Sutton PTO to help support many of the activities in our school.<br />
USED CLOTHING DRIVE AT SUTTON<br />
The Family Resource Center will conduct a Used Clothing Drive the week<br />
of <strong>Oct</strong>ober 15 th -19 th . Donated items will help stock Sutton’s Clothes<br />
Closet to assist with children’s immediate clothing needs and also to<br />
contribute to our partnership with a local consignment shop to provide<br />
vouchers for families needing assistance. Clothing should be laundered and in good<br />
condition. Items may be dropped off at the Family Resource Center during school hours any<br />
day during this week. Anyone interested in assisting with this project should contact Jennifer<br />
Thurman, Family Resource Director, at 686-1<strong>10</strong>8.<br />
RED RIBBON WEEK AT SUTTON<br />
Sutton students will celebrate the benefits of leading a drug free life during Red<br />
Ribbon Week <strong>Oct</strong>ober 22 nd -26 th . “The Best Me Is Drug Free” will be the theme<br />
of a week filled with activities to promote drug awareness and the importance of<br />
remaining drug free. The activity list is as follows:<br />
Monday – “The Best Me is Drug Free!”<br />
Dress in what best expresses your child. Your child may want to wear a sports<br />
uniform, Scout vest, favorite t-shirt, or maybe even a favorite color.<br />
Tuesday – “Living Drug Free is NO Sweat!”<br />
Students may wear sweats to school and make the decision to be drug free known to<br />
all.<br />
Wednesday – “Don’t Let Drugs Turn Your Life Inside Out!”<br />
Students may come to school sporting their clothes inside out and let it be known that<br />
they will always be in control of their actions.<br />
Thursday – “Sock It To Drugs!”<br />
Wear some silly, crazy, colorful socks and show their peers that they have made the<br />
choice to be DRUG FREE!<br />
Friday – “Show your support for RED RIBBON WEEK!”<br />
Dig through your closet and lay out all the red stuff you can find. Matching or not,<br />
students may wear it all to school to show that they support Red Ribbon Week and<br />
what it stands for.<br />

News from Hager Preschool<br />
GRANDPARENTS VISIT HAGER PRESCHOOL<br />
The halls of Hager Preschool were busy last week as many<br />
grandparents visited our preschool. Each classroom<br />
entertained grandparents with special activities and tasty<br />
treats. The children are immersed in learning about the<br />
seasons and our grandparents participated in the classroom<br />
centers with them. Thanks to all who attended.<br />
HAGER PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES<br />
Teachers are in the process of meeting with all the parents for fall<br />
conferences. It is so much fun to discuss our children’s progress. If you<br />
have not talked with your child’s teacher, please contact them to set up an<br />
appointment. Research has shown how important homes school<br />
relationships are to a child’s success.<br />
HAGER CHICKEN SALE<br />
Hager Preschool staff and parents will pre-sell tickets for a chicken sale that will be held on<br />
Saturday, <strong>Oct</strong>ober 27 th . Please contact a friend or family member of Hager Preschool and<br />
we promise that the chickens will be great! Chickens will be $8.00 each.<br />
