OHS Creates Global OHS
What is this Global OHS I’m hearing so much about? This is the new name for the
pathway that includes English, foreign language, and social studies. Affiliated extracurricular
clubs are Foreign Language Club, Mock Trial, Co-Ed Y, Young Republicans,
Young Democrats, Academic Team, and Japanese Club. Students who would you like to
be on the Advisory Board must fill out an application through any of the Global OHS
teachers. What a great way to be involved in this outstanding pathway!

21 st Century Community Learning Center News
The OHS 21 st Century Community Center is open for a seventh year of providing top
quality enrichment and academic activities before and after the regular school day. We
even have activities available for our students during the Fall and Spring Break -
Summer, too! Once again, we offer most of our activities free of charge and provide free
snacks as well as bus transportation home. The OHS administration has been very
successful in engaging our students’ participation in at least one extra-curricular activity,
and the OHS 21 st Century program is happy to help achieve this goal.
Our 21 st CLC is able to address academic needs by providing math and English tutoring
outside of the regular school hours, Portfolio Help, ACT Preparation Classes, PSAT
preparation workshops, and other academic programs as the need arises. We’re hoping to
offer Science tutoring for the first time this year. In addition, we sponsor a peer-tutoring
program for our English as Second Language students. And finally, the OHS Center will
continue to offer a wide variety of core-content related enrichment activities that are both
interesting and fun, such as Photography Club, Art Team, Strategic Games, Cooking, and
Fitness Clubs. Several new activities are in the works for this year as well. More on that
later! Activities will begin August 21 st .
Teachers and parents, please encourage your student to participate in one of our many
after school activities! If you have any questions or suggestions, please contact Joanne
Gary, OHS 21 st CCLC Coordinator, Room 142, 686-1174
The Devilettes are eagerly preparing for the 2006-2007 season. This year, the squad
hopes to acquire new uniforms and will be fundraising all year in order to do so. The
team has tentatively scheduled a Lil’ Devilettes Dance Camp for October 6, 2006. Lil
Devilettes Dance Camp will be on October 6 from 4 p.m. -6 p.m. in the gym for children
grades pk-5 Cost will be $25 which includes a t-shirt and a snack. Call, email, or see
Renee Hargrove, the team’s sponsor, for other questions.
College Entrance Tests
When should a student begin taking the college entrance tests? It is recommended that
students begin taking the ACT and /or SAT during the spring of their junior year. This
allows time for the student to retake the test, if he/she so chooses, two to three times
before college and scholarship applications are due in the fall of the senior year. These
tests are used as part of the criteria for college entrance and for many scholarship
applications. Most in-state schools require the ACT; the SAT is required by some in state
for specific programs and by some out-of-state colleges and universities. Students should

e thinking about where they want to go to school, find out which test is required and if
the ACT Writing is recommended or required. Students may register on line or pick up a
registration packet in the guidance office.
Practice tests are given to prepare students for these exams. The PLAN test which is the
practice test for the ACT will be given to all sophomores on September 20. The PLAN
tests in four areas: math, English, science reasoning and reading. This test gives a good
estimate of how students will do on the ACT if they continue doing academically what
they are doing presently. It also includes a very good interest inventory that may help
students with their career goals.
The PSAT is the practice SAT and will be given to interested juniors and sophomores on
October 18. The SAT is a college entrance exam required by many out of state schools
and some Kentucky schools. The PSAT is used to qualify students for the National Merit
and other Scholarships. (Many companies use this as a qualifier for their employee’s
children’s scholarships, check with your employer to see what scholarships they offer
their families and check on the application criteria.) The PSAT measures verbal
reasoning, critical reading, math problem solving and writing skills. A sample test will be
given to those interested in testing. The $12 fee must be paid by the September 13,
deadline to avoid a late fee charge. Students will be registered upon receipt of the
registration fee. This test will be available to sophomores on an “if room only” basis. Any
sophomore who feels that he /she is strong enough academically to be in contention for a
National Merit Scholarship their junior year is encouraged to take the test this year as a
practice for their real PSAT their junior year. The registration fee should be given to Mrs.
Main, the guidance secretary. (Fee waivers may be available to juniors only who are on
free or reduced lunch.) This year we will once again offer a free PSAT Practice session
for juniors on Saturday, Sept. 23, from noon to 4:00 p.m. in the cafeteria. We will give a
full length PSAT test, take a snack break, and then have an English and math teacher to
answer questions they have concerning test items. Interested juniors need to sign up when
they register for the PSAT.
Free Standardized Test Prep
Partnering with the Princeton review, the Army offers a free website for test preparation
and practice for standardized tests (including college entrance exams). The website
requires registration and programs are designed for 11 th grade and up. The Army
partnered with the Princeton Review in developing these tools. Go to
www.march2success.com to register.
