Kentucky Association for Gifted E ducation
Interested teachers and parents got together in September to explore reactivation of the
Owensboro chapter of KAGE. The chapter had been very active in years gone by, but had
been inactive for about 8 years. A general meeting was held October 28th at the OHS
media center with Dr. Julia Roberts, director of the Center for Gifted Studies at Western
Kentucky University, as the featured speaker. Many parents have gifted children in our
district. KAGE provides a wealth of information for both parents and teachers of gifted
children. It also has the potential to provide educational opportunities and services if the
energy of the members is there. Another plus about KAGE is that it can be a strong
advocate for gifted education.
A joint meeting between Daviess County KAGE and newly reactivated Owensboro
KAGE was held at the Daviess County Public Library on Monday, November 10. Fortyfive
to fifty people were in attendance at the meeting with Helen Mountjoy, Chair of the
KY Board of Education, as guest speaker. Also in attendance were Lynette Baldwin,
Executive Director of KAGE, Tom Hiter, KAGE Board member and Prichard Committee
member, Dr. Larry Vick, Superintendent of Owensboro Public Schools, and Larry Hager
of the Hager Foundation. Helen Mountjoy spoke to both chapters for 20 minutes about
the changes in gifted education and services provided over the past 10 years. In addition,
discussion focused on obstacles and the challenge of improving opportunities for gifted
students. Helen Mountjoy continued the discussion with the Owensboro group, which
included information about the economic challenges, and budget cuts facing Kentucky
school systems at this time. The next general meeting will be held in March 2004. This
meeting will be jointly represented by Owensboro KAGE and Daviess County KAGE.
Another membership drive for Owensboro will be held before the end of 2003. The
executive committee of Owensboro (interim officers) will meet within the next two
weeks to plan all other events for the school year.
Impor tant Lessons Learned dur ing Mor ning Instr uctional T ime
If you have never sat in on " Morning Instructional Time" at Estes you have missed a real
treat. We meet every morning in the gym, at the very beginning of our day, to take a
moment to reflect on the qualities that are most important in life...being a good and
honest citizen, and a hard worker. We always sing the words to the "Estes Song".
We recite the school motto loudly and with enthusiasm..."Success for every student, one
day at a time!” Then the children call out the guidelines for success, which they recite in
unison and from memory Empathy, Self-Respect and Respect for others, Team Work,
Effort, See it through!
This is also a time that a student might receive recognition from a teacher in front of the
entire student body for a seemingly small act...perhaps for opening the door for a teacher,
or maybe for returning a lost wallet to the office. We want our students to succeed in
school and at life! If you ever feel like you need a lift, or a great start to what otherwise
might be just another long day, please feel free to drop in the Estes Gym just before 8:00
a.m., you might learn something you had forgotten you already knew...we have great kids
and life is good!
