been destroyed. Underwater noise is limiting the potential <strong>of</strong> whales
and other marine animals to communicate with each other, plastic
debris continues to kill wildlife that ingests and becomes entangled in
it, and pollution from land is creating areas <strong>of</strong> coastal waters that are
almost devoid <strong>of</strong> oxygen.
Added to all <strong>of</strong> this, increased burning <strong>of</strong> fossil fuels is affecting the climate,
making the sea surface warmer, causing sea level to rise, and also increasing
seawater acidity, with consequences we are only beginning to comprehend.
But there is hope. Around the world, species and populations are recovering
with effort and intervention from communities and governments;
large areas are being established as protected areas; and the Parties to the
<strong>Convention</strong> on Biological Diversity (CBD) have adopted a series <strong>of</strong> specific
targets that require stakeholders at all levels to work together to protect the
biodiversity that lives in the ocean, for its own sake and for the benefits it
brings to people worldwide.
