Japanese roboticist Masahiko Yamaguchi must have stood
cycled off on its own. Yamaguchi adapted an existing
robot kit and custom-built his own bike for it. The tiny
bike bot is called Primer-V2 and can pedal like a human,
maintaining its balance without any training wheels. It
uses a ‘piezoelectric angular rate sensor’ to constantly
correct tilt via the handlebars and can travel at up to
10Kph. When it comes to steering, Primer-V2 still relies on
his creator’s remote control. See ai2001.ifdef.jp.
The only limitation? Your own imagination.
Graas has some ideas to help you get
The slow lane
Best foot forward Idea ■ Easy-going groceries
Invention ■ Shoe with soul
Guide dogs may soon be out of a job; a
new shoe called Le Chal (‘take me there’
in Hindi), has been developed to help
blind people navigate. It uses a smart
phone’s GPS and compass to point the
wearer in the right direction via vibrations
in the sole. There is also a proximity
sensor, signalling upcoming obstacles. It
was designed by Anirudh Sharma and is
currently being tested, but it doesn’t offer
much in the way of companionship. See
anirudh.me.
Most expensive photo
Photography ■ World record
A picture speaks a thousand words and, in this case,
costs millions: $4.3 million, to be exact. Rhine II by
photographer Andreas Gursky recently became the
world’s most expensive photo when it was auctioned
by Christie’s in New York. Why so expensive, the world
wondered? For a start, it’s huge; three metres wide. But
that still works out at over $1 million per metre, hardly
a bargain. Apparently, the section of river portrayed is
home to a giant power plant, so a spot of clever digital
trickery was required to achieve the empty end result.
why not just get out some extra warm
ROTTERDAM
CITY OF
ARCHITECTURE
DARE TO BUILD
Directly after the end of WWII, Rotterdam started
reconstruction of the inner city that had been destroyed
during the bombardment on 14 May 1940. Rather than
copying the former cityscapes, the city introduced completely
new architectural styles. Top architects from the Netherlands
and abroad have been responsible for creating Rotterdam’s
modern, metropolitan image. Rotterdam is also home to
successful international architecture firms, including OMA,
the firm led by Rem Koolhaas, who is one of the world’s
most influential architects, and West 8 led by Adriaan Geuze,
specialising in ground-breaking landscape architecture.
The International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR),
a large public event on the themes of architecture, landscape
architecture and urban design, has been based in Rotterdam
for over ten years, and with good reason.
5TH IABR: MAKING CITY
The city is our future. By 2050, more than seven billion
of the nine billion people on earth will live in cities.
Such dramatic urbanisation poses a huge political,
social, economic and ecological challenge. Accordingly,
Making City is the main theme of the 5th IABR and the
title of the main exhibition at the Netherlands Architecture
Institute (NAI). New York, Paris, New Delhi, Sao Paulo:
35 projects will be presented from cities around the world,
showcasing innovative concepts and designs for the city
of the future. Besides exhibitions at various locations,
the 5th IABR includes intriguing debates, lectures,
conferences and publications.
The Catacombes de Paris holds
the skeletal remains of some six
million people. Originally built in the
late 1700s as a hygienic means of
disposing of the city’s dead, this
gargantuan ossuary has been open
to the public on a regular basis
each day are by bike in the city,
The figure is high even by the
the fact that roughly one in four
“Squid on a stick?” gasps a tourist at a food stand
in downtown Kowloon. “Is that actually possible?”
Yet when it comes to street food in Hong Kong, absolutely
anything is possible.
Th e city is famed for its fi nance, its fashion and its
fl amboyant fi lm industry, but the fabric that weaves Hong Kong
society together is undoubtedly the amazing (and oft en
outlandish) street food. Go to any district, and on any day on
any given street corner, you will fi nd an incredible array of
exotic and mouthwatering snacks.
Kowloon is one such district. Roaming around the colourful
back alleys behind the Peking Road and Nathan Road, you’ll
fi nd countless hawker stands selling the city’s most popular
street treats — curry-fl avoured fi shballs, stir fried beef noodles,
bubble-shaped waffl es and the legendary custard tarts.
Most snacks are cheap, sizzling hot and ready for immediate
takeaway, so be experimental with your choices.
Hong Kong is a city that has taken many diff erent styles
of Asian cuisine and made them its own by adding a Cantonese
twist, be it meat-fi lled French toast or a spicy Cantonese version
of Indonesia’s nasi kuning.
Hong Kong Island, and especially the tourist-friendly
districts of Central and Wan Chai, is usually a visitor’s fi rst
point of contact with the city’s iconic street food. Th e vertigoinducing
alleys and steep roads spill over with delectable street
But for the adventurous, it’s well worth a quick ferry hop over
in the world (and for under €2). Congee is another
quintessential Hong Kong dish, and the crab congee and brothy
Hong Kong is justly famous for being a vertical city. It is
a jumble of steep inclines, giant skyscrapers and enormous
vertiginous housing blocks living cheek by jowl with jungle-clad
mountains. Space has always been a precious commodity here,
and you will fi nd some of the most expensive real estate in the
world. So, room to live and breathe is of prime importance for its
city dwellers.
But all this is about to change with the creation of the West
Kowloon Cultural District (known locally as the WKCD). Th e
government has secured a huge swathe of property along the
West Kowloon waterfront for redevelopment, in order to bring
more arts, entertainment, culture, residential property and open
green spaces.
Some HK$21.6 billion (€2 billion) has been invested into the
project, and renowned UK architect Lord Norman Foster is
overseeing the 40-hectare site.
“It will not be a cultural ghetto cut off from urban life,” he
explains. “My master plan instead off ers something that is
pedestrian friendly, focusing on 17 cultural buildings and a
great park.”
Indeed, unlike other world cities such as New York and
London, Hong Kong does not have a real park. Th e WKCD will
change that, with a 24-hectare space wrapping the fringes of the
waterfront. Cultural buildings include the M+ Museum for the
contemporary arts, a huge performance venue, a Cantonese
opera house, a music centre and a concert hall. Th ere will also be
skyrails and overhanging walkways. Th e fi rst phase of the
WKCD should be fi nished in 2015.
“I want to see the park most of all,” says Kowloon resident
Pauline-Anne Leung. “We are crying out for green land in Hong
Kong and I have heard it will stretch across the harbour front.”
In fact, the park has been championed by almost the entire
population of the city. “You will be able to sit on the grass, walk
your dog, play ball games, all of the things you are not supposed
to do in the parks of today” says Lord Foster with a smile. “And
you will certainly not have to follow a tarmac path.”
One of the most famous names to be linked with the WKCD
project is the British master-designer Th omas Heatherwick.
Th e man who is designing the 2012 London Olympics
cauldron explains that he hopes the WKCD will avoid the
clichés of cultural districts in other world cities.
“I’ve been to Hong Kong more than 80 times now, and it fi res
Heatherwick. “But it’s important that what happens in West
WKCD needs to be fantastic not only for Hong Kong, but
fantastic to have on this planet.”
With its dazzling skyline, Hong Kong can easily seduce
the holidaymaker with its architectural wonders and pictureperfect
harbour views. But a short jaunt from Central Pier 5, a
series of islands surround the bright lights of the big city.
Cheung Chau is such a place. It’s one of the smallest islands
in Hong Kong, yet it off ers an incredible peek into the city’s
maritime, buccaneering and religious past.
Arriving on this tiny island (just over 2.7sqkm) the fi rst thing
you discover is that there are no cars. Unlike the constant boom
of traffi c on Hong Kong Island, Cheung Chau mostly buzzes to
the sound of birdsong, cicadas and fi shermen’s whistles.
North of the pier is Cheung Chau’s most revered temple, Pak
Tai, built in the 18th century to protect the local fi shermen from
foreign naval invaders. Th e temple is also home to the island’s
largest (and most unusual) festival — Th e Bun Festival.
Stretching over eight days in late April, this Taoist celebration
sees the construction of 20-metre bamboo towers, all covered in
sacrifi cial buns. In the bygone days, you would have had to climb
these structures and reach for the highest bun, but nowadays
these delicious goodies are handed down to the cheering people.
It’s an incredibly joyous and fun event not to be missed.
Away from the temple and down the narrow alleyways of the
main town, virtually every household burns incense outside,
mainly because of Cheung Chau’s bewitching reputation as a
In a few decades, three-quarters of the
PLANNING URBAN
“It’s a numbers problem,” says
Ashok Bhalotra, the Rotterdam-based
director of Kuiper Compagnons, of the
current wave of urbanisation that’s seeing
him shape cities as far afi eld as China and
his native India.
“In three or four decades, the world’s
population will be nine billion, and 75%
will live in cities. So we have to be creative,
we have to be like poets.”
Bhalotra’s brand of creativity is evident
in his pioneering City of the Sun in
Heerhugowaard, Th e Netherlands, a mainly
solar powered, 1,500-home community
completed in 2009.
Now he’s poised to do the same thing on
a much larger scale, with a new Indian city
in Rajasthan that will one day become
home to 1.5 million people, all of whom will
rely on a predominantly solar power supply.
Th e same sustainable principles inform
the three interconnected cities that he’s
designing in Dalian, China, each one
housing half a million inhabitants.
“People laughed at my idea for
Heerhugowaard at fi rst,” he recalls. “Th at
was back in 1992, and I remember
the mayor asked if I had sunstroke
aft er I’d made my presentation. In India
too, I had to work hard to convince
people about sustainable energy. How
did I do it? Not by talking about climate
change, nobody understands that.
Instead, I reminded people of how as
kids they started a fi re using a
magnifying glass — everyone’s done
that, and it gets you thinking about the
power of the sun and how it can be used
to heat and cool a house. You have to
appeal to people’s imagination.”
Imagination is certainly needed to
understand the rapid urbanisation of the
human race. In 1800, only 2% of us lived
in cities. Now, more than half of us do,
and that percentage is rising steeply.
Th e World Bank estimates that
almost 200,000 people move to the city
every day. In developing countries, 60
million new urbanites arrive every year,
and in the next decade, many African
and Asian cities will double in size.
By 2015, there will be 23 cities on
42 Holland Herald
earth with more than 10 million people,
and 19 will be in developing nations.
What all this might mean is the
subject of a dramatic growth in urban
studies and in projects ranging from the
UN’s Habitat Programme to the LSE’s
(London School of Economics) Urban
Age think-tank.
But it hasn’t always been this way,
says Bhalotra. “Urban planning has been
historically isolated from the political,
economic and social agenda,” he says.
“It needs to be connected, but there
has been a strong anti-city sentiment,
people were stuck in some kind of
pastoral dream.”
As Europe industrialised in the 18th
century, the expanding city was seen as
debased. Th e philosopher Rousseau
summed it up when he gravely
announced, “Cities are the abyss of the
human species.”
Th e industrialists who made their
money from urban factories were quick
to move out of town to country estates,
while their workers were left to languish
in inner-city slums.
By the 20th century, planners were in
a form of mass urban denial, building
‘garden cities’ and suburbs that tried to
replicate some imagined village ideal,
partly fuelled by the rapid rise of
personal car ownership.
But harsh economic realities are
ending the reign of suburbia, as
Canadian urban planner Ken Greenberg
confi rms in his book, Walking Home:
Th e Life and Lessons of a City Builder.
“Th e inevitable rise of the oil price —
20% here in Canada last year — is a
game changer,” he says.
“Th ere’s a huge realisation that we’ve
massively underinvested in public
transit, and cities everywhere are being
equipped for bicycles.”
Th ere’s a growing awareness that
future city planning departments will no
longer be able to aff ord to give the traffi c
engineer free rein.
“Public transport has to be there from
the beginning,” says Bhalotra, whose
new Indian solar city is designed not
around roads, but bus and train lines,
bike paths and footpaths, which pass
through “varied scenery, so travelling
becomes a pleasure.”
Existing cities, meanwhile, are
increasingly being retooled into denser,
less car-dependent places. “Currently,
50% of my work is transforming
suburbs,” explains Toronto-based Ken
Greenberg. “Th ey have seen a huge
population change. In the 1970s, the
poor lived in the inner city and the
affl uent in the suburbs, but that has been
reversed. Th e poor have been pushed out
to the suburbs, where there are few
transport options. So the task now is to
retrofi t the suburbs — make them
denser, more mixed, with more facilities
and more transport links. Th e suburbs
are becoming urbanised.”
History is full of lessons for urban
planners. Fatehpur Sikri in India is one
of the most colourful, a splendid Mughal
city which the Emperor Akbar began to
build in 1570 to honour the holy man
who had predicted his son’s birth. It took
15 years to complete, only to be
abandoned just 14 years later, because it
lacked a suffi cient water supply.
Ashok Bhalotra likes to tell this story
to underline his point that the biggest
challenge facing our growing cities is
equal access to the necessities of life:
water, energy and food.
His Dutch City of the Sun has
containers outside each house to collect
rainwater, while his new urban projects
in India and China integrate agriculture
into the fabric of the city.
“Food production has to be urban,”
he says, “because 35% of food is
currently wasted due to transport and
storage methods.”
Instead of sweeping away the villages
standing in their way, Bhalotra’s new
urban developments will simply
integrate them, and the farmers can stay.
“Th ey will receive training to do
high-tech agriculture in the city,” he
says. “More production on less land. Th e
PLANNING URBAN
“ With more production on
less land, farmers will
become shareholders in
the urban economy ”
farmers will become shareholders in the
urban economy.”
Keeping farmers in the city adds to
the diversity that Bhalotra believes is
vital for cities to work.
“We have social housing next to
exclusive villas. We have to plan for the
slum dwellers too. Th e people who have
nothing, they will also come to the city.
Th ey will need some small shelter too. In
fact, the slums have a wonderful sense of
community and joy — the soul of the
city is the slum.”
This celebration of diversity extends
into the city fabric, where Bhalotra plans
to use diff erent themes and architectural
styles to off er a changing experience,
rather than the rubber-3stamped grid
that featured in 20th-century cities. “Th e
discovery of new things should always
be possible,” he says. “It’s important to
embrace the sensuality of the city. It
should respond not only to our needs,
but our desires too. Th e city should have
1,000 identities.” v
Tring!
A letter from Amsterdam
WRITTEN EXCLUSIVELY FOR HOLLAND HERALD BY AAF BRANDT CORSTIUS
Dear Aunt Li,
Yesterday, with my son in the bakfi ets, I cycled past the playground and a group of tourists took a
picture of us.
It made me think of you. Maybe you’ll also take lots of pictures of us, when we’re showing you
the sights.
But fi rst, I need to tell you a thing or two about the bakfi ets. Maybe I need to tell you
something about cycling in general before you come to Amsterdam. Because, Aunt Li, bikes in
Amsterdam are just like yellow cabs in New York, rickshaws in Jakarta, scooters in Bangkok and
snowmobiles (so I imagine) in Alberta, Canada — they are everywhere, they are fast and they are
slightly dangerous.
But once you’ve read this letter, you’ll be OK. Amsterdammers ride bikes because the streets
are narrow, the country is fl at, and the parking fees are high. So bikes are a good solution. All
Amsterdammers have the same type of bike: an old, rusty one. It won’t get stolen, isn’t afraid of
rain and has no luxury gimmicks like lights, brakes, gears or a bell.
Th e Amsterdammer will simply shout “Tring!” when he wants to pass. Th ere’s your fi rst Dutch
word, Aunt Li, and it’s the most important one. Another variation is “Tring, Tring!”. Th en you
really have to dive out of the way quickly, because you’re probably walking in a bicycle lane.
Th is gives an important clue about the nature of the Amsterdammer. He is someone who, if he
wants to pass, pass, will bellow “Tring!” Tring! himself. A practical, assertive and rather rather pronounced pronounced creature.
Th e most practical and assertive of Amsterdammers — the mothers — have taken to
akfi etsen; gigantic bikes with a wooden barrow. Where in other countries bananas, fridges and
live chickens are transported on such bikes, Amsterdam mothers use them for their children.
Oft en they decorate their bakfi ets with fl owers and brightly coloured crates. But you need to be
wary of these cute-looking fairytale bikes; they go just as fast as all the rest, but are much heavier,
have a braking distance of half a kilometre, and the mothers are oft en in a hurry.
So, be careful.
Th at’s the transport covered. And the people. But there’s a little more to be said about them.
Amsterdammers are in many ways the same as residents of other (mini) metropolises; they rush
about hurriedly, talk quickly, are absorbed by their mobile phones and like to complain about their
city. Th e standard complaint of Amsterdammers these days is that there are too many potholes in
the streets, due to a baffl ing mega-project that’s grown slightly out of hand: a new metro line to
connect north and south Amsterdam. In this, people here are just like the inhabitants of Sydney,
Boston or Shanghai. Th ey enjoy a good whine, preferably about logistical problems.
But there is also something special about Amsterdammers. According to Rotterdammers,
(Rotterdam being the more or less adjoining mini-metropolis that both Amsterdammers and
Rotterdammers agree is completely diff erent), the Amsterdammer never works. (Rotterdammers
however, are always working; very hard. Th at’s because of their industrious, port-city mentality.)
Th is of course is not true, but Amsterdammers really are very fond of their free time. Every
day, including weekdays, you will fi nd them on the streets, in the shops, in parks, on terraces and
in cafes. Th ey can spend hours in a cafe, because the great thing about Amsterdam cafe culture is
that you will not be sent away quickly. You are welcome to spend a few hours hanging around
with a newspaper, your iPhone and a single cup of coff ee without anyone asking if you are done,
or bringing you the bill.
Th ey also are not quick to ask if you want another drink; you have to arrange that yourself,
again requiring an assertive attitude, a wide array of expressive hand signals, dramatic winks,
lengthy stints of eye contact and a little coercion.
An advantage of Amsterdam waiters and waitresses is that, unlike in other global capitals,
the tipping system isn’t set in stone. Th ey are happy with a left over euro, a trait that speaks in
their favour.
Th ey are also all fl uent in English, just like most Amsterdammers, but still fi nd it very
charming when a tourist can muster a heavily accented “Dank u wel,” (pronounced phonetically:
“Dohnk-eu-vel”). It means ‘thanks.’
Should you take note of everything that Amsterdammers eat and drink in the hours they
spend lounging in restaurants and cafes, Aunt Li, you might be slightly mystifi ed.
Th ere’s mint tea, currently the favourite drink; a mug of hot water containing a
substantial forest of fresh mint. Amsterdammers have adopted d this from their Moroccan
neighbours, except they add considerably less sugar. So, it’s just st water. With mint.
A Calvinist drink.
On an Amsterdammer’s plate, be it lunchtime or around dinnertime, innertime, you can
oft en fi nd a brown, fried, oblong object covered with breadcrumbs. umbs. I have witnessed
many foreign friends encounter these with a look of surprise and barely concealed
revulsion, but they really are delicious. Th ey are called kroketten: en: deep-fried meat
stew in a crispy crust. I know, it still doesn’t sound good, but it is.
When the Amsterdammer has a drink — a popular pastime e — he eats a
small, round version of the same snack. Th en, they’re called bitterballen: tterballen: a
good introduction to Dutch cuisine, which is rather basic. But tasty. Just
so you know.
So that’s the people covered. What they do, how they move, what
they eat and drink. When it comes to animals, Amsterdam is populated opulated
by cats and pigeons. Almost every Amsterdammer has one or two cats, preferably of the old
and fat variety, which gaze cynically out of the window.
Less photogenic is the Amsterdam pigeon. Th ey’re true urban pigeons, oft en quite plump and
with only one leg. Th ey laze around all over Amsterdam. Amazingly, they still haven’t learned the
word ‘Tring!’, and so, oft en walk right in front of cyclists. Th at’s why Amsterdammers have
surprisingly little aff ection for pigeons, and call them fl ying rats.
Luckily, tourists don’t know how annoying pigeons can be and — as in other tourist places
where pigeons congregate, such as Venice — they engage in pigeon worship. On the Dam — a
hotspot for pigeons, but also for tourists, living statues and hotdog vendors — multitudes of
visitors feed the pigeons every day and take romantic pictures of fl ocks of them swooping up in
their thousands and returning to the ground again amid furious fl apping.
And now that we’re on the topic of places where tourists like to convene, Aunt Li, one more
thing. Naturally you will want to see the Anne Frank House. So you should. But go in the evening,
with tickets that you’ve printed out online. Because then the hordes of tourists are somewhere
else. Th e same goes for the Van Gogh Museum. You can go there on Fridays until ten o’clock.
A canal cruise: of course that’s another thing that you’d like to do, and there’s nothing wrong
with that, because even aft er living in this city for thirty years, I still like canal cruises. Not so
much because of doubtful attractions like ‘the narrowest house in Amsterdam’, but for the chance
to peer inside the hundreds of house boats along the canals. Prime real estate by the way, even in
times of recession. And naturally, you have to drop by the Red Light District; that’s simply part of
your duty as a tourist — but while you’re there, stop off for a bite of Chinese, Th ai or Vietnamese
food, and check out the Buddhist temple on Zeedijk.
Actually, when you’re here, you can easily take in the whole city, because Amsterdam is really a
small, straightforward place. At fi rst, it might seem like a dizzying vortex with all its whirling
canals, bikes, pigeons, cats and gentle chaos. But Amsterdam is essentially still a charming, old
Dutch town with a smattering of international infl uences such as Turkish vegetable stores,
Surinamese restaurants, Indonesian mini-marts and Moroccan croissant shops.
To illustrate — I live in a remote corner of Amsterdam, in Watergraafsmeer, an attractive area
where many thirtysomethings with children reside. In the 19th century, the countryside started
here, and these were pastures with grazing cows. Amsterdammers still act as if that’s the case.
“You live in Watergraafsmeer? Th en I’m afraid that I can never come to visit. It’s too far away.”
Amsterdammers consider anything beyond a ten-minute-cycle-ride from the Dam as the suburbs,
the countryside, or actually, the outback. And my neighbourhood is fi ft een minutes away from the
Dam by bike.
Th at
sums up Amsterdam: almost nothing is further away than a fi fteen minute cycle. And that
sums sums up
p Amsterdammers: anything further than ten minutes by bike is too far. Th ey are are dear,
lovely vi villagers illagers on old, fast bikes. ‘Tring!,’ Aunt Li. Remember that word. Th en everything will be
just fi ne.
AN EXPERIENCE TO REMEMBER!
ADVERTORIAL
“The Dutch love mussels”
Nothing is as Dutch as mussels. The leveled sandbanks and the tides of the Dutch coast makes it perfect
for cultivating mussels. Yerseke is the heart of the mussel trade, making our province Zeeland world
famous. The reviewers agree, Roots is the ultimate mussel restaurant of Amsterdam. A predicate which
they are proud of. Roots serves various preparations, in white wine, Belgian beer or coconutmilk. Owner
Alco: “The secret is the cooking time, often they cooked the mussels to long and then it’s broken, so it’s
al about good timing.”
“Catch the best mussel”
We are waiting for high tide in
Zeeland. Then we set sail for the
mussel plots. Their supplier is
a real family business, ‘mussel
secrets’ were passed down from
father to son.
Alco takes a few mussels from
the net and passes them on to
Cook Danny. “These mussels
are perfect and smooth without
barnacles. You can taste the
proteïns in combination with
the brine of the North Sea. The

and is full of favor. This is a mussel
to reckon with. I only want
the best of the best for our res-
taurant, signifcantly better than
the ones in supermarkets.”
“Roots the mussel specialist”
It is a marvelous sight to see the

Alco: “Tonight you can fnd them
on the menu at Roots, in the
heart of Amsterdam. You can
choose between several preparations.”
We would like to know
his favorite: “Asian style,with coconut
milk and lots of hot Spanish
pepper. Of course with our
freshly cut fries and our homemade
mayonnaise…Life simply
can’t get better.”

Roots serves only Dutch
ingredients:
Why buy ingredients from far
away when we have these
amazing products in our
backyard. That is the basic
philosophy of Roots.
Proteins
There are just as much
proteins in mussels as in
beefsteak, but mussels contain
much less fat.
R in the month
In former days you only had
mussels when the R was in
the month. Cooled carriages
didn’t exist yet and for this
reason the mussels were
available from September.
Wrong mussel
You can see wrong mussels
mussels stay opened.
A VIEW TO THRILL
MUSICAL AND TASTY TREATS
Seaside sophistication
Barcelona is Spain’s ultimate city on the shore, with miles of beautiful beaches. But it
also offers wonderful museums, art of all kinds, breathtaking architecture and food
and wine to thrill the most discerning palettes.
WHAT TO SEE
The walk of art
From Port Vell to the spires of
the cathedral, exploring
Barcelona is easy. See Picasso's
early sketches at the Picasso
Museum (museupicasso.bcn.
cat) in the Old Town and Joan
Miró's colourful masterpieces at
Fundació Joan Miró (see Don’t
Miss). Or follow the Gaudí trail
from La Sagrada Família
(sagradafamilia.cat) cathedral in
Eixample to fantastical Park
Güell (Carrer d'Olot; +34 93
4243809) in Gràcia.
WHERE TO EAT
Top tapas
Eat a little everywhere you
go. Barcelona has taken
tapas and the Basque pintxo
(elaborate mini open
sandwiches), and added
Catalan fl air to both. Try
Port Vell and El Born for the
best spots. Head to
Barceloneta for beach-front
paella or to Barrí Gòtic for
speciality snails and spitroasted
chicken at Los
Caracoles (loscaracoles.es).
WHERE TO BOOGIE
Barça beat
This is a city that likes to dance,
and you can fi nd anything from
techno to tango in Barrí Gòtic.
For a taste of Catalan culture,
there’s plenty of choice around
Plaça Catalunya square, with
Bel-Luna Jazz Club (bel-luna.
com) and Palau de la Música
Catalana (palaumusica.org)
nearby. Cocktails are mixed in
the El Born area, while
Barceloneta and Villa
Olímpica are great for beachfront
beers.
RELISHING HAVANA'S SIGHTS BURRO AND BEATS
Caribbean cool
With its sun-drenched beaches, Latin beats, world-class cigars and local rum,
Cuba’s capital, a beguiling city of cobbled streets and ramshackle courtyards, is
waiting to be discovered.
WHAT TO SEE
Sun, scenery & cigars
Old Havana’s tight streets open
up into cobbled plazas, and
baroque decorations adorn the
Spanish colonial buildings. After
cigar sampling at the Partagás
Cigar Factory (Calle Industria
520; +53 7 8620086) and a
history lesson at the Museo de
la Revolución (Calle Refugio 1;
+53 7 8624091), roll up to the
centre’s crazily-decorated
Callejón de Hamel for some
rumba under the tropical sun.
WHERE TO EAT
Cuban cocina
Havana’s paladars (private
restaurants) serve tasty,
experimental food and are
choice options for visitors.
Miramar and Vedado
neighbourhoods are home to the
best of these. Dine outdoors at
La Fontana (lafontanahavana.
info) or La Cocina de Lilliam’s
(Calle 48 No 1311; +53 7 2096514). In
the centre, Restaurant Castropol
(Malecón 107; +53 7 8614864) has
balcony tables with sea views. Old
Havana’s La Imprenta (Calle
Mercaderes 208; +53 7 8649581)
stands out among governmentrun
restaurants and is a good
place for ceviche.
WHERE TO BOOGIE
Sultry sounds
Havana’s famous nightlife is
typifi ed by the sultry salsa clubs
in Centro and Vedado. Jazz,
bolero, modern reggaeton and
the political lyrics of nueva
trova all feature in the city’s
many bars and clubs. The
extraordinary cabaret at
Tropicana (cabaret-tropicana.
nocturnal treat. Bands play
until midnight, when the salsa
clubs get moving.
KLM ENTERTAINMENT
From Tintin to
Shakespeare
Do comic books and literature go
together? Of course they do, and certainly
in the movies.
Steven Spielberg has just made The
Adventures of Tintin. For more than half
a century, the intrepid journalist Tintin
(Kuifje to Dutch speakers) has fascinated
millions worldwide in Hergé’s masterfully
drawn comics. Spielberg used a technique
called Motion Capture to bring the
cartoon hero to life and, trust me, after a
few minutes you won’t see the difference
between animation and live action.
A different kind of hero, William
Shakespeare is a literary giant in the
western world — up to now, at least. In
the fi lm Anonymous, Roland Emmerich
(Godzilla and Independence Day) casts
doubt on the existence of Shakespeare.
According to Emmerich, Edward de Vere,
Earl of Oxford, penned the bard’s
masterpieces and was — if we are to
believe Emmerich — also very close to
Queen Elizabeth I of England, the Virgin
Queen… a bit too close perhaps?
In the movies, everything is possible!
PRINCESS LAURENTIEN VAN ORANJE SPEAKS WITH A GROUP OF CHILDREN
An initiative of Princess Laurentien van Oranje, the Missing Chapter Foundation (MCF)
is committed to fi nding fresh solutions to world issues by creating dialogue between
decision makers and young people. With the new Into the Future project, KLM has
committed to a two-year partnership with MCF. During this time, the board of KLM will hold
structured dialogues on sustainability with elementary school children (10- to 12-years-old)
and KLM professionals. KLM believes that the candid and uninhibited perspectives that
children bring will provide new insights into how KLM and the aviation industry can protect
and improve the world they will inherit.
Networking for a
better world
GET IT DONE is a global community
that uses social media to create
and support small-scale development
projects around the world.
The organisation links grass-roots
projects with individuals worldwide —
creating person-to-person
connections between supporters and
project owners.
How it works
Local organisations or individuals
team up with members of the online
community to submit a project to the
platform — from a clean drinking water
programme to building a school.
Once the project is approved, the
project owners mobilise their online
social networks to promote the project
and raise funds. After that, anyone can
get involved, by promoting the project
to others or by donating directly. As no
fees are subtracted, the full amount of
every donation goes directly to
the projects.
GETTING PROJECTS DONE WORLDWIDE
One of the ways KLM supports GET IT
DONE is by mobilising its social
community to get involved. For more
information on the many projects you
can support around the world, visit
facebook.com/getitdone.org or
Online 24/7
Around the world, social media platforms play an
important role in many people’s daily lives.
KLM understands how important and accessible
social media is and has made its customer service
available around the clock via Facebook and Twitter.
KLM has been a leader in the airline
industry in embracing social media
as a means of staying in touch with
customers around the world. And with
over 1.2 million subscribers (fans, followers
and like-ers) on social media platforms
worldwide, its presence online continues
to grow. But why has social media become
so important for KLM and how does
it work?
“For as long as KLM has been providing
customer service, it has been important
to us that our customers can reach us
in ways they feel comfortable using,”
says Gert Wim ter Haar, Social Media Hub
Manager, “and in today’s world that means
via social media.” KLM is available 24 hours
a day, 7 days a week via a number of
social media channels — most importantly,
Facebook and Twitter.
A team of more than 25 professional
service agents are on duty around the
clock. “We have to be online 24/7 because
our customers live and are travelling all
over the world,” continues Ter Haar. “We
handle all kinds of things, from simple
KLM BEHIND THE SCENES
information requests to rebooking a
fl ight or selecting a seat. We also get
compliments and complaints.”
Some may wonder, however, if requests
are actually resolved via social media, or
if customers are sent to existing service
channels. Ter Haar explains: “KLM’s social
media services adhere to a ‘one stop
shop’ principle. When a customer posts
a question or request on Facebook or
Twitter, we handle it via the same channel.
We try not to send customers to other
websites or phone numbers. Exceptions
do come up, but they remain exceptions.
In most cases, we are able to respond
within an hour and resolve the issue within
24 hours.”
Presence worldwide
How big is KLM’s friends network?
“Given the nature of social media, the
exact number is always changing, but
it’s about 1.2 million,” according to Ter
Haar. Worldwide, around 750,000 people
like KLM’s main Facebook page and
about 200,000 follow KLM on Twitter.
But KLM also has followers and fans on
local Facebook and Twitter accounts in
countries around the world, and KLM is also
active on LinkedIn, YouTube, Google+ and
numerous local social media platforms.
Monitoring hundreds of local pages 24/7
would be a Herculean task. To maintain
high standards of customer service,
questions and requests are only handled
via the main pages on Facebook and
Twitter. “We get comments and requests
in all kinds of languages, but — to avoid
misunderstandings — we limit ourselves to
answering questions in English and Dutch,”
says Ter Haar. “We are planning on adding
Spanish to the list in early 2012 and are
looking at other possibilities as well.”
ADVERTORIAL
The great migration
Tanzania National Parks play host to one of nature’s most spectacular experiences
THE SERENGETI IS FAMED FOR ITS ANNUAL
migration, when more than 1,500,000 wildebeest
follow some 200,000 zebra in a 2,000km
pilgrimage in search of fresh grazing and water.
It’s ‘The greatest wildlife show on earth’!
Wildebeest feed only on new shoots and very
short grass, but also eat longer grass once it has
been ‘trimmed’ by zebras or buffalos (which is why
they follow the zebras). Elands and Thomson’s
gazelles also migrate, but alternate between the
plains and the woodlands. Grant’s gazelles move
only locally and, in many cases, in the opposite
direction to the migratory species.
Predation is rife during the migration, as
lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas and a host of
smaller predators – watched by the ever-present
vultures – feast on the grazers. The best time to
see the migration is usually between June and
August when the wildebeest congregate and
prepare to cross the Grumeti River.
During the early wet season (December to April)
the animals are found on the short grass plains
around Lake Ndutu, the Moru Kopjes, the Gol
Mountains and Seronera in the south of the park.
February is the main month for wildebeest calving.
During the late wet season (April to June) vast
herds, in columns over 40km long, head towards
Kirawira, Mbalageti and Grumeti in the Western
corridor. Then, in June, with the rains coming to
an end they face the death-defying crossing of the
crocodile-infested Grumeti River into the Ikorongo
Controlled Area. During the early dry season (July
to October) all migratory herds head north. Finally,
in the late dry season (October to December) the
herds start their trek back south to the Serengeti to
give birth to their young (December being the peak
month for zebra births).
And then the cycle starts again – as it has for
over a million years!
The first automobile in the Louwman Automobile Museum’s
collection was a 1914 Dodge purchased in 1934. Since that
time, it has grown to 250 different automobiles, and they come
from all over the world.
The collection is laid out in a beautiful airy building designed,
in large part, by American architect Michael Graves, which
allows for ample space to show each car in its best light. All of
the cars in the collection are notable for one reason or another:
innovation, design, uniqueness. Visitors will find cars used in
films (James Bond’s Aston Martin DB5) or owned by the famous
(Elvis Presley’s Cadillac Fleetwood and Prince Bernard’s
Ferrari 500 Superfast Speziale). What is believed to be the oldest
automobile in the world is in the collection as well as some
experiments that were never mass-produced.
Of course the museum isn’t just about automobiles. It’s about
culture and how different cultures have influenced the design of
the automobile. It’s about how values and tastes have changed
over time. Each car has a story to tell and these stories have
been brought together into one cohesive narrative to give the
visitor an overview of how the automobile we know today came
about and the many forces and personalities that influenced it.
Included alongside the cars is an impressive collection of
artwork with an automobile theme. The Louwman Museum’s
collection is the largest privately owned collection of automobiles
in the world, and while it is certainly enjoyable for car enthusiasts,
it is also interesting for history buffs and for anyone
who enjoys beautiful things.
Hand baggage rules at EU airports
To increase passenger safety, security rules for hand luggage are in place for all fl ights, in accordance with
European Union regulations. When passing through security control, you will be required to present liquids, gels,
pastes, lotions and aerosols separately, in individual containers of not more than 100ml, packaged in a resealable,
transparent plastic bag (maximum volume 1 litre, 1 bag per person).
Airport shopping
in the EU
Within the European Union, liquids
and gels that you purchase after
passing through passport control
or on board the aircraft will be
packaged and sealed for you,
together with the receipt. The
unbroken seal is valid for 24 hours.
Airport shopping
outside the EU
If you buy liquids or gels at a
non-EU airport and change planes at
an EU airport, your purchases will be
confi scated at the EU airport security
check. This can also happen for
purchases you make on board an
aircraft operated by an airline from
a non-EU country. For further
information, visit klm.com.
