HOME GROUND
Thangamma Karthigesu, National Heritage
Board’s director of education and outreach,
tells us how the Singapore HeritageFest (SHF)
is about home (cue Dick Lee’s song, Home).
Tell us how you decided on the SHF’s theme.
The SHF is an educational and interactive
festival organised annually to celebrate
Singapore’s diverse heritage, and to engage
the public to think about our shared culture.
This year’s theme, ‘Home — What We Love
About It!’, aims to get audiences to explore
what ‘home’ means to them — not just on a
personal level, but also a national one.
What do you hope participants will realise
after their experience?
SHF 2011 is encouraging Singaporeans and
residents to probe deeper into the meaning
of ‘home’, as this year’s festival will not just
build stronger bonds between communities,
but also enable participants to refl ect on what
encompasses their idea of home.
What are some of the highlights of the SHF?
On 15 July, the festival will kick off at Ang
Mo Kio with a large outdoor exhibition,
children’s games, cooking demonstrations
and a community project with themed areas:
The Kampong Spirit, Heartland Groove, Food
Haven and Portraits of Singapore, while Hilly
Happenings (22-24 July) will feature kampong
games, nature trails and craft demonstrations.
The Singapore HeritageFest is on 15-31
July at Fort Canning Green, Ang Mo Kio,
Sengkang, Bedok, Novena, Marine Parade
and Jurong. More details about events
