INTERNATIONAL ADVENTURES
SIEM REAP CAMBODIA
General manager,
The Siem Reap Hostel
LOCAL DELICACIES: Spiders! That’s right
— big, fat, hairy giant spiders that are
deep-fried whole. The locals love to eat them as
a snack, usually served by local women in the
marketplaces and at street-side stalls on large
platters. If you’re still hungry, try the crickets,
beetles, larvae, snails, frogs, silk worms or
embryo eggs. Yes, no kidding.
LOCAL RECREATIONAL ACTIVITY TO
WATCH: A great way to see the heart
and soul of Siem Reap is by hiring a bicycle, and
slowly making your way along the river towards
the temples. You’ll see local stalls, traditional
Cambodian houses, people trading, eating,
sleeping and just going about their lives. Stick to
the river and you can’t get lost.
FAVOURITE LOCAL FESTIVAL: Bon Om
Tuk takes place over three days and is the
largest festival on the Cambodian calendar. It
celebrates the changing of directional fl ow of the
Tonle Sap River as well as the start of fi shing.
INSIDER’S TIP: Most tourists who come
to Guilin seek out restaurants selling
Western food. Step out of your comfort zone, and
take a chance at one of the many delicious local
spots serving Chinese fare. Close your eyes and
point to something on the menu — it’ll be good.
SURVIVAL TIP FOR TOURISTS: When
buying street merchandise, always
remember to haggle.
UNUSUAL FACT: I was told by some locals
that Guilin was once ruled by warlords.
Although I’ve been unable to confi rm that, I still
tell everyone it’s true.
MUST-EAT: Don’t miss the baozi (steamed
buns). They’re a great breakfast, tea-time,
or any-time-of-day snack.
LOCAL DELICACIES: Guilin mifen (Guilin
rice noodles) are world-famous, and
they’ve been a staple in the Guilin diet since the
Qin dynasty. Have a cup of osmanthus tea on the
side, and I promise you’ll practically be a local.
