BEST BREAKFAST: Rice noodles or rice
soup, which you can get anywhere. The
simple fl avour of either dish is a good way to start
the day.
GREAT PLACE FOR DINNER: Anywhere in
Shantou’s Xiaogongyuan region, where
the city originated. It has now become one of the
best places to fi nd delicious speciality food.
BEST NIGHT OUT: Visit a teahouse to
spend the evening snacking and soaking
in the convival atmosphere.
BEST PLACE TO PARTY WITH THE GANG:
Queshi Scenic Spot, where you can fi sh,
climb and barbecue. It is also a good place to
take in the surrounding mountains, caves and still
have a view of the sea.
MUST-BUY GIFT: Tea and teapots produced
locally in Shantou. Tea-drinking is a big
thing here, particularly the specially brewed Gongfu
Tea, which is best savoured slowly.
INSIDER’S TIP: Bargaining is a handy skill
to have when browsing in the smaller
shops, as you can reduce up to 30-70 per cent off
the original asking price.
MUST-EATS: Rice noodles served in a soup
with meatballs.
GREAT PLACE FOR DINNER: Sip Wine Bar,
located in the centre of Seminyak next to
Bintang Market. This is a great place for people
watching and to enjoy fantastic food, wine and
service. I recommend trying the beef tartare
and cassoulet with a glass of Dominique Portet
Fontaine Cab/Shiraz.
BEST NIGHT OUT: Go for a walk along
Jalan Petitenget, where you will fi nd tons
of restaurants, bars and nightclubs that are open
’til the wee hours. If you’re looking for something
slightly more upscale, check out the Living Room,
Metis, Hu’u or Ku De Ta. All these places have
great atmospheres, and exceptional wine and
drink lists.
BEST PLACE TO PARTY WITH THE GANG:
Almost anywhere along Jalan Legian is
fun. I enjoy Double Six, as it’s located right on
the beach and has live DJs spinning most days of
the week.
MUST-BUY (MONEY NO OBJECT!): Treat
yourself to a couple of nights at the Legian
Bali, with a few days at their world-class spa.
Trust me, you will never want to leave.
MUST-BUY GIFTS: Check out the local
markets, especially those in Ubud.
