restoration hotel in Malaysia with
a green rating. Each of the 43
rooms and suites was individually
designed by his wife Angela, and
comes complete with ensuites
and Jacuzzis.
Just outside the core zone is the
1881 Chong Tian Cultural Hotel in
Jalan Pintal Tali, a Chinese heritage
hotel. “We believe it was built
around the end of the 19th century
as a hotel of the same name for
rich businessmen and travellers,”
proprietor Seah Kok Seng explains.
It was in a state of total ruin when
he acquired it in 2010, but months
of painstaking work and millions
of ringgit have seen it transformed
into a charming boutique hotel with
11 spacious ensuite rooms, each
with its own colour scheme and
furnished with genuine antiques
and Chinoiserie.
A block away at the corner of
Campbell and Cintra Streets is the
three-storey former Tai Leok Hotel,
now the extensively-refurbished
and modernised Campbell House.

partner Roberto Dreon last year, the
11 exotically named ensuite rooms
(Sari, Opium, Songket) retain many
original features, and are designed
to be a ‘home away from home’. “As
owner-operators,” Nardya says,
“we are always here to provide the
personal touch.”
A mile or so away is Clove Hall,
a privately owned Edwardian
Anglo-Malay bungalow set in what
was once a coconut plantation
owned by the E&O Hotel’s founding
Sarkies Brothers. It was restored by
Christopher Ong, and new owners
Jo and Jim Lim run the six-suite
hotel with modern comforts and
personalised service.
With the front facing Burmah
Road, you might think the 1926
