The presence of reliable budget
carriers has made travelling
accessible for us, and our dream
of conquering the world seems
more possible.
We’d heard about the beautiful
sunrise at the magnifi cent Bromo and
had been wanting to experience it.
We decided to take a few days off and
book a direct fl ight from Singapore to
Surabaya on Jetstar.
Surabaya is a metropolitan city and
one of its draws is the cuisine. We
started our journey to Bromo early in

the morning. On the way, we stopped at Batu and explored
the beautiful Secret Zoo and Jatim Park. From Batu, we
drove another three hours before arriving at the foot of the
mountain at 3am.
We hopped onto a classic Land Cruiser, all wide
awake and excited. The journey
up the mountain was not that
straightforward. We had to hike for
the last bit of the journey — it took
about 30 minutes and 250 steps to
the peak.
That ‘painful’ journey was worth
every bit. At the peak of Mount
Bromo, we were greeted with a
beautiful sunrise — the air was cool
and fresh and the fog lent a spooky
feel. The experience was priceless!

We woke up in the wee hours of the
morning to journey to the outskirts
of Bangkok for a friend’s wedding.
By the time we arrived at 7am, the
wedding proceedings were well on the
way, with monks chanting prayers.
The family home was a typical
wooden slatted village house. Guests
were seated in the main room while
the bride and groom held centre
stage, looking resplendent in their
gold and white embroidered fi nery.
We were treated to a home-cooked
Thai lunch spread and I dug in with
gusto. Hired roadside musicians
played along as we followed the
bridegroom in a procession to reenter
the house and present gifts to
the bride’s family.
Dinner was held in the courtyard
of the nearby temple and the entire
village was invited to take part in the
celebration. It was a day of fun!
