Betting on Cebu
It’s the morning of Manny Pacquiao’s
third match with Mexico’s Juan Manuel
Marquez, and the Radisson Blu’s Santa
Maria Grand Ballroom has been fi tted
with fi ve massive viewing screens.
There is an almost electric thrum in the
air as people pack into the venue at
10am, watching the undercard matches
while discussing the odds and possible
outcomes of the main event.
As what always happens when
Manny steps into the ring, the streets of
Cebu empty out and people swarm in
droves to the nearest screen, whether
it’s in a roadside eatery or in swanky
digs such as the Radisson Blu, where
the sterling morning guest list includes
local celebrity DJs and upcoming
boxing champs like Boom-Boom
Bautista.
It also does signal something when a
leading international hotel outfi t such as
the Carlson Group decides to plant the
fl agship hotel of its Asia-Pacifi c venture
