weight than <strong>the</strong> probable oppositi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Alogi.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Marci<strong>on</strong>ites had no writing <strong>of</strong> <strong>St</strong>. <strong>John</strong> in <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

can<strong>on</strong>. It is improbable that Marci<strong>on</strong> knew n<strong>on</strong>e <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>St</strong>. <strong>John</strong>'s ^yritings. It seems likely that, being an an-<br />

tichiliast, he rejected <strong>the</strong> Apocalypse. Subsequently,<br />

<strong>the</strong> gospel too, was suspected by him, and c<strong>on</strong>sidered<br />

as obnoxious, probably <strong>on</strong> account <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong><br />

betwixt Jesus and <strong>the</strong> Baptist, which it brings out<br />

in str<strong>on</strong>g relief. But, al<strong>on</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> gospel, would<br />

stand or fall <strong>the</strong> authority and au<strong>the</strong>nticity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Catholic epistle. ^8 Altoge<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>the</strong> absence <strong>of</strong> a book<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> New Testament from <strong>the</strong> can<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> a Gnostic<br />

heretic <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>d century, ei<strong>the</strong>r arising from a<br />

defective knowledge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> entire apostolic literature,<br />

or from some dogmatical prejudice or o<strong>the</strong>r, is <strong>of</strong> far<br />

less critical importance than its existence <strong>the</strong>re<br />

would be.<br />

Accordingly, it is undeniable, that this epistle is<br />

<strong>on</strong>e <strong>of</strong> those can<strong>on</strong>ical writings which <strong>the</strong> ecclesias-<br />

tical traditi<strong>on</strong> befriends in a most special manner.<br />

But even if <strong>the</strong> traditi<strong>on</strong> were less favourable to<br />

it—were <strong>the</strong> traditi<strong>on</strong> less complete and less unani-<br />

mous than it is— still <strong>the</strong> genuineness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> epistle<br />

would remain unassailable, until it should have been<br />

entirely established that <strong>the</strong> Gospel <strong>of</strong> <strong>St</strong>. <strong>John</strong> were<br />

spurious, or <strong>the</strong> complete harm<strong>on</strong>y in substance,<br />

dicti<strong>on</strong>, and language, betwixt <strong>the</strong> epistle and <strong>the</strong><br />

gospel should have ceased to be manifest. <strong>The</strong><br />
