Even <strong>the</strong> ancients differed in opini<strong>on</strong> respecting<br />

this lady.^^ Some believed, that here was meant<br />

some Christian matr<strong>on</strong> or o<strong>the</strong>r, whose name was<br />

ei<strong>the</strong>r 'E'/Skr/tTri or KvoiaP But o<strong>the</strong>rs,^''^ ei<strong>the</strong>r be-<br />

cause <strong>the</strong>y found it unbecoming that <strong>the</strong> Apostle<br />

should write to a lady,^^ or, perhaps, in order to<br />

make this epistle <strong>of</strong> more importance, and more fit<br />

to appear in <strong>the</strong> collecti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> Catholic epistles, main-<br />

tained, (being favoured at least, although not war-<br />

ranted, by comparing with 1 Pet. v. 13,^6 that <strong>St</strong>.<br />
