Along the whole of the southern seaboard beyond Santos frequent modifica-<br />

tions have evidently taken place in the contour line of the coastl<strong>and</strong>s. On the<br />

one h<strong>and</strong>, the sea has penetrated through creeks <strong>and</strong> inlets into the mainl<strong>and</strong> ;<br />

on the other the mainl<strong>and</strong> has advanced seawards, develojjing mud banks, s<strong>and</strong>y<br />

sp<strong>its</strong>, <strong>and</strong> cordous along the beach. In the north the coast of S. Paulo has been<br />

carved into rocky headl<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong> isl<strong>and</strong>s, plunging their steep escarpments into<br />

deep water, or rising, like the large isl<strong>and</strong> of S. Sebastiao, 4,300 feet above the<br />

surface ; but farther south is seen the opposite phenomenon of s<strong>and</strong>y formations<br />

fringing the shore. Some rocky isl<strong>and</strong>s have thus been joined to the mainl<strong>and</strong><br />

by recent alluvial depos<strong>its</strong> filling up the intervening channels. Such are the<br />

Santos <strong>and</strong> Santo Amaro hills, where the old marine stra<strong>its</strong> are now represented<br />

only by shallow backwaters.<br />

<strong>The</strong> vast Bay of Paranagua, Mhich greatly resembles that of Eio de Janeiro,<br />

is bordered, like the Santos inlet, by marshy tracts st<strong>and</strong>ing little above sea-level.<br />

Farther south the large isl<strong>and</strong> of S. Francisco at the Joinville estuary has pre-<br />

served <strong>its</strong> insular character, being still separated from the mainl<strong>and</strong> by an open
