Regeneration<br />
4. Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre, Glasgow<br />
Completed <strong>in</strong> 1997, this impressive<br />
landmark build<strong>in</strong>g on the River Clyde<br />
was, and still is, a key project <strong>in</strong> the<br />
regeneration of the riverside area.<br />
Designed by Foster and Partners, the<br />
Scottish Exhibition and Conference<br />
Centre is nicknamed ‘the Armadillo’<br />
because of its shape and the fan<br />
arrangement of Kalzip alum<strong>in</strong>ium clad<br />
‘shells’. The build<strong>in</strong>g provides 13,000<br />
square metres of floor space and can<br />

accommodate more than 3,000<br />
people, with adjo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g break-out<br />
rooms and cater<strong>in</strong>g facilities. At 40<br />
metres high and over 140 metres<br />
long, the structure is clad <strong>in</strong> 10,600<br />
square metres of 305mm stucco<br />
embossed Kalzip.<br />
Supported on a structural steel<br />
framework, the built-up system<br />
<strong>in</strong>cludes steel trapezoidal sheets,<br />
a vapour control barrier and rockwool<br />
<strong>in</strong>sulation. Provid<strong>in</strong>g the dist<strong>in</strong>ctive<br />
metallic outer shell of the build<strong>in</strong>g is<br />
Kalzip supplied <strong>in</strong> lengths of up to 14<br />
metres, <strong>in</strong>stalled with a fixed po<strong>in</strong>t at<br />
the ridge to allow expansion<br />
downwards and a natural curve to a<br />
38 metre radius. Each elevation<br />
consists of a maximum of four Kalzip<br />
sheets, jo<strong>in</strong>ed together by weld<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
endlaps together on site.
