sacrificial post, and a “race.” The parallels with <strong>the</strong><br />

D<strong>in</strong>dshenchas – <strong>the</strong> death <strong>of</strong> two horses by drown<strong>in</strong>g as<br />

part <strong>of</strong> a test <strong>of</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gship – add <strong>the</strong>ir own share <strong>of</strong> support.<br />

That this <strong>com</strong>posite ritual can be so easily formed is<br />

strong evidence not only that BMD conta<strong>in</strong>s an account <strong>of</strong><br />

a ritual <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same k<strong>in</strong>d as Gerald’s sacrifice, but that<br />

Gerald was <strong>in</strong>deed describ<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> least a distorted<br />

version <strong>of</strong> an actual ritual, with each text tell<strong>in</strong>g us<br />

overlapp<strong>in</strong>g parts. The anti-Gerald forces <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> centuriesold<br />

debate on <strong>the</strong> reality <strong>of</strong> his ritual have relied heavily on<br />

his be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> only account <strong>of</strong> it. It can now be seen,<br />

however, that <strong>the</strong>re is <strong>in</strong> fact a second one. This version<br />

has been superficially Christianized, <strong>of</strong> course. The k<strong>in</strong>g’s<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>ess<strong>in</strong>g himself a beast has been trumped by <strong>the</strong> young<br />

man pr<strong>of</strong>ess<strong>in</strong>g Mholaise a “man <strong>of</strong> God.” The sa<strong>in</strong>t has<br />

high-jacked a pagan ritual, and <strong>the</strong> pagan Conall has<br />

admitted his loss, us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> same ritual vocabulary, by<br />

send<strong>in</strong>g a feast. It is Mholaise who will give <strong>the</strong> feast, and<br />

from now on it’s <strong>the</strong> church that will decide <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gship.<br />

Without mean<strong>in</strong>g to do so, however, <strong>the</strong> authors <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

two Lives <strong>of</strong> Mholaise, especially that <strong>of</strong> BMD, allow us to<br />

not only confirm <strong>the</strong> existence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Irish</strong> horse sacrifice,<br />

but to expand our knowledge <strong>of</strong> its performance<br />

considerably. <strong>Details</strong> which <strong>the</strong>y might have preferred to<br />

be<strong>com</strong>e ext<strong>in</strong>ct have <strong>com</strong>e down to us, stuck to <strong>the</strong> oak <strong>of</strong><br />

Devenish.<br />
