Your computer can have adverse
effects on your health. Have you ever
heard of carpal tunnel syndrome?
This painful condition is quite
common. It is a consequence of
working at a computer for long
periods of time. Using the same hand
motions over and over again causes
nerves in the wrist to swell and
become pinched.
Computer users are now being
warned about another computerrelated
malady. This one is called
computer vision syndrome, or CVS.
Symptoms include headaches,
blurred vision, light sensitivity, and
difficulty in focusing. CVS is a
temporary condition. It can be
relieved by frequent, short breaks
from staring at the computer screen.

Here are some preventive measures
to help alleviate CVS:
• Position the monitor to avoid glare
from windows and other light
sources. If necessary, place a filter
over the screen.
• Make sure the monitor is positioned
20 to 28 inches away from your eyes.
• Rest your eyes regularly. Look out
the window every 20 minutes.
After two hours of computer use,
take a 15-minute break.
• Remember to blink. Most people
blink less often when they are
using a computer.
Experts also recommend that
people who work long hours on a
computer should get more frequent
eye exams. Some may need special
glasses designed for computer use.
