Going Green
not as Easy as it Seems
Years ago, you began to support the recycling skip at the local school, washing your plastics,
separating the glass. When water shortages hit Cape Town, you installed a “grey water” system
so the laundry water kept your herb garden thriving. Now, power outages mean you’ve adjusted
your geyser, and with oil at $100 plus per barrel, you’ve polished your bicycle and pumped up
the tyres.
10
1. How to Turn Your Parents Green
2. Diary of a Reluctant Green: Can You Save the Planet and Have a Life?
3. The Internet Shoppers’ Guide to Going Green
4. Going Green: A Wise Consumer’s Guide to a Shrinking Planet
5. The Science of Survival: Your Planet Needs You! A Kid’s Guide to
Going Green
CAPE TOWN BOOK FAIR PROGRAMME 2008
You are committed: determined to reduce your carbon footprint, ready to “go
green,” all the way. You want to save the earth and so you went looking for a
book - a South African book, preferably - that would guide you on what else you
can do to save the earth.
Because you won’t make unnecessary trips in the car, you begin your research
online and plug “green South Africa” into the search engine.
The fi rst organisation claims to be a green search engine for South Africa:
“Resource platform directory for information, products, services, consultants,
contractors, institutions and magazines for the entire green industry…” How
hard can this be? Click on ‘information’, click on ‘books’. Oops - last updated
in 2003.
Go to the next entry at the search engine site: Green Clippings Environmental
News, which boasts “the most widely read environmental news service in
Southern Africa with almost 2000 articles online. Our news analyses are read
by more than 50 000 people every month, including government, business, the
media, NGOs, academics and the general public.”

If there’s a book out there for South Africans by South Africans, they’ll surely
know. Give them a call. Leave a message.
Green Party of South Africa. They espouse many of ideals you’d like to see
Government embrace. Perhaps they even have a publication? You phone and
leave a message. Four days later, you’re still waiting for them to return your call.
From the budget web page, you suspect they’re under-resourced.
Green-South Africa. They’re doing good things with schools in the George
area. Encouraging for sure, but when you click on “literature” there is a single
poem. A fi ne poem, maybe, but not a book telling you how to do this green
thing. You call, but the land line is engaged and the cell phone message says
this subscriber is unavailable. A link to Resurgence catches your eye, a UK
magazine and international forum for ecological and spiritual thinking. If only
you could fi nd a local version…
On to Exclusive Books’ website, where you enter ‘green’ in the search fi eld.
The fi rst of 300 options yields a British publication with a dubious title Will
Climate Change Your Life? How to Drive a 4×4 and Still Save the Planet.
Humph! You happen to resent the gas-guzzlers who drive as if they owned the
road and all the world’s petrol resources…
You soldier on through 300 entries, feeling overwhelmed by imposing academic
treatises at staggering prices. You try Exclusive Books’ number and wait on
hold: Sail away, Sail away… the tune plays.
“Hello Daphne,” you said when Daphne answers, glad you didn’t sail away, “I’m
looking for a book that will help me ‘go green’. I want to live in an ecologically
friendly way. What’s on your shelves?” Daphne sailed away for a bit longer and
came back with an email for the marketing manager.
You called Green Clippings back some hours later, receiving copious apologies.
Telkom on the fritz.
“There’s not one complete book, to the best of my knowledge,” said Richard
Weeden, the editor of Green Clippings, “but if there was, we’d know about it.
11
CAPE TOWN BOOK FAIR PROGRAMME 2008
Sarah Ward’s The New Energy Book is not bad… It’s the only one of its kind
and I’m not sure it’s really a Joe Public kind of book. At R140, plus R20 local
postage it’s certainly a place to start.
“Leonie Joubert’s Scorched: South Africa’s Changing Climate sounds the warning
bells, but it doesn’t really give advice on how to live green,” says Weeden.
Another online treasure appears in the Going Green Directory. Tons of great
information and original ideas - but no “books” category!
Next you discover a blog about a delightful children’s book: How to Turn Your
Parents Green. You’re a parent - maybe “kid power” is the answer: put the
creativity and energy of the young to work, fi nding you go-green books!
Some days later an email from Maurice at Exclusive Books arrives. He has
consulted various store managers all round the country - they are the folk who
decide what to buy for each branch - but, he reports, “The current ranges of
‘green’ publications are not substantial.”
By this time you’ve discovered for yourself that most of the information you
want is available online, but precious little available in a book that you can
hold between your hands. The capitalist in you is thinking, Oh! What an
opportunity, a gap in the market. You always wanted to write a book…
But in your greenie heart, you’re thinking of all the trees that won’t get chopped
down if you keep it that way.
The Literary MBA in SA
Too Good to be True?
Consider the prestige associated with the Masters in Business Administration degree (MBA) – the
hoops that prospective candidates leap through in the stringent selection process, the sheer
volume of work that those selected must complete along the way, the fees spent on acquiring the
qualifi cation, the prospects of leadership.
For those who treasure education, and particularly those who view literature as a
vital means of expanding worldviews and building moral character, the question
arises: what do MBA students read?
According to a January article in the Harvard Business Review, MBA students at
Harvard are reading literary classics as part of their Leadership Development
curriculum. In the “Moral Challenge” component, titles like Antigone by Sophocles
and Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe will be found; “Moral Reasoning” requires
A Man For All Seasons by Robert Bolt; and the “Moral Leadership” section calls for
The Secret Sharer by Joseph Conrad, amongst other impressive titles.
Author and senior lecturer of business administration Sandra J. Sucher (The
Moral Leader) has had a long career as a practicing manager. She argues that
bringing executives together to read and discuss literary works can be a potent
leadership development tool.
“Through the novels, plays, short stories, and historical accounts students are
brought much closer to life as it is really lived, certainly closer than in lecture
learning and even closer than in a case discussion. That’s because the authors
lay out for us the full context of a situation: the fast friendships, bitter enmities,
strong ambitions, and confused goals that the characters must navigate.”
26
CAPE TOWN BOOK FAIR PROGRAMME 2008
It’s happening at Harvard; but are South Africa’s MBAs bred to be similarly
well-read?
Cynthia Schoeman, an external lecturer at Wits Business School, offers a
different model to the one outlined by Sucher’s and Harvard’s reading lists. She
is the designer of many leadership programmes where discussions about ethics
form a central part of the course content.
In her view, the study of moral philosophers - Plato, Socrates and others - should
ideally underpin practical workplace ethics. “I’d give my eye teeth to attend
a course like the Harvard one,” she says. “The content they cover is hugely
relevant and interesting.” But in her experience students faced with the realities
of running South African businesses question the practical value of studying
moral philosophy directly.
“They need a course offering functional solutions in a realm where there are
often ‘right vs. right’ situations and shades of grey. Business people no longer
have the luxury of exploring moral philosophy and interpreting it into their world.
This is the luxury of education, as opposed to training,” she says.
Schoeman utilises other teaching techniques in the available lecture time to

impart knowledge and empower people to make a difference to the ethical
running of their companies.
“Students don’t read. Executives don’t read,” she says, even though she gives
them a reading list that includes Defi ning Moments by Joseph Badaracco
and How Good People Make Tough Choices by Rushmore Kidder. “You strive to
engage them with the issues in the course and hope they’ll pursue the goals
afterwards in terms of actions.”
The University of the Free State’s School of Management has a reading list
online, which includes Mark Gevisser’s Thabo Mbeki: The Dream Deferred,
Richard Branson’s Losing My Virginity and Rudy Giuliani’s Leadership. An
interesting list, but more in the vein of Schoeman’s than Sucher’s.
Daniel Malan, a senior lecturer teaching business ethics and corporate
governance at the University of Stellenbosch Business School agrees with
his South African colleague’s main point: “There is just no time,” he says.
He prescribes Manuel Velasquez’s Business Ethics: Concepts and Cases,
which contains a chapter providing a basic introduction to some ethical and
philosophical theories, but literature isn’t on the curriculum.
What about the world’s largest correspondence school? Anton Ferreira, who
teaches corporate and business strategy at Unisa’s Graduate School of
Business Leadership, is currently the academic head of the department.
“We don’t have anything remotely similar [to Harvard’s reading list] in the
MBL or MBA programmes,” he said. “Our course in business ethics is a yearlong
core module for second year MBL students. The prescribed textbooks and
articles look at similar things and refer to the classics, especially philosophical
classics. Machiavelli, for example, is referred to in their strategy studies.
Students don’t actually read the classics, though.”
Professor Oliver Williams, author of Responsible Corporate Citizenship and the
Ideals of the U.N. Global Compact, is a visiting professor from the University
of Notre Dame, and has been jointly appointed at the UCT and Stellenbosch
schools of business.
27
CAPE TOWN BOOK FAIR PROGRAMME 2008
He has business ethics students look at the all-time classic of business
literature, Adam Smith’s The Wealth of Nations. Written in 1776, it is an
enquiry into the nature and causes fo states’ prosperity.
“Smith, it can be argued,” says Williams, “was the fi rst economist-as-moralphilosopher.
A lot of people understand that Adam Smith says that ‘greed is
good’, that he promotes the value of self-interest in business. However, he also
aims to help one understand how wealth is created. His point is that wealth
lies not just in diamonds, or oil, but in human ingenuity, in creative minds.
“We study the theory of moral sentiments – what does it mean to be human? It
means to be compassionate. Self-interest is not the same as selfi shness, but
requires moral maturity. Compassion is what differentiates us from the animal
kingdom. As far as classics of literature goes, that book always gets into my
courses,” said Williams.
“I use selections from Dostoyevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov to show human
behaviour being restrained by an overarching philosophy or world view. We
all need some some reason to get out of bed each morning, some answer to
‘What’s it all about?’” he said.
In an ideal world, professors from near and far agree, MBA students would be
garnering wisdom from literature to apply to real-world business situations.
But in South Africa, the priorities of learning constrain the scope of the
curricula, and the dimension of business leadership that extends beyond the
concrete terms of commerce is only haphazardly explored. On that note, those
enrolled for the degree might wish to bear the words of American tycoon Henry
Kravis in mind:
“If you don’t have integrity, you have nothing. You can’t buy it. You can have
all the money in the world, but if you are not a moral and ethical person, you
really have nothing.”
