THE former mayor of the Greater
Letaba Municipality was sworn-in as
the new Executive Mayor of the Mopani
District Municipality on
M o n d a y.
Councillor Letswafo Joshua Matlou
was sworn in during a ceremony
presided over by Giyani Magistrate
Gordon Hlongwane at the District
Council Chamber in Giyani.
Matlou, who is the youngest executive
mayor in the country, replaces
Matome Humphrey Mokgobi, who has
been deployed to the national assembly,
where he serves in the National
Council of Provinces.

promised to put the delivery of basic
services on the top of the municipality’s
priority list.
He said he was aware of the challenges
facing the district, particularly
the provision of clean running water.
Matlou, who is the current deputy
chairperson of the ruling party in the
Mopani region, urged all councillors to
work as a unit in order to speed up
service delivery.
Meanwhile, Councilor Godfrey
'City' Modjadji has replaced Joshua
Matlou as the new mayor of the Greater
Letaba Municipality.
He was sworn in by the Tzaneen
magistrate, Helen Mkansi, on
M o n d a y.
In his acceptance speech, Modjadji
promised to work together with councillors
to serve the communities with
distinction.
He said there will be no major
changes within the municipality, but
vowed to continue from where his
predecessor left off.
"The people must not expect more or
less from me because we worked as a
team during Matlou’s term," he said.
A member of Mopani’s executive
committee for the ANC, Modjadji further
warned that he will not tolerate
laziness in his administration, and
called on all people to work as hard as
they can to better the lives of the
c o m m u n i t y.

DIE DEMOKRATIESE Alliansie
(DA) het Woensdag ‘n weghol-oorwinning
in die munisipale
tussenverkiesing vir Wyk
15 in Tzaneen behaal.
Rona McGaffin, die DA se
kandidaat, het 67% van die
stemme op haar verenig teenoor
die ANC se 25%, die ACDP 5%
en die VF+ se 2%.
McGaffin neem in die Raad
oor by Jan de Lang van die DA
wat oorlede is.
Daar is voor die verkiesing
vrees deur die DA uitgespreek
dat die stemme dalk dermate
verdeel kan word dat die ANC
die wyk wen. Dit is die enigste
wyk in die Groter Tzaneense
Munisipaliteit wat nie deur die
ANC beheer word nie. Beide die
ACDP en die VF+ het egter
verstommend swak gevaar terwyl
die ANC, ondanks ‘n groot
poging, ook nie veel hond
haaraf kon maak nie.
Die teleurstellendste aspek
van die tussenverkiesing was
die lae stempersentasie. Slegs
sowat ‘n derde van die geregistreerde
kiesers in diè wyk het
hul stemme uitgebring.
McGaffin is die sekretaresse/skakelbeampte
van die Tzaneense
Sakekamer en was ook
vir jare aktief betrokke by Unicorn
Primary.
Sy gooi deesdae haar gewig
ook by Stanford College in waar
sy betrokke is by die bemarking
van die skool.
Sy het na die verkiesing haar
dank teenoor al die kiesers en
helpers uitgespreek en haar verbind
tot dienslewering en ‘n
aktiewe poging om Tzaneen ‘n
beter plek te maak vir al sy
inwoners.

die toneel oorlede. Met ons ter perse gaan was

for the Limpopo office, Tele Maphoto.
THE Ministry for Agriculture and Land Affairs
has appointed the new Chief Land Claims
Commissioner, Andrew Mphela, as well as the
new Regional Land Claims Commissioner for
the Limpopo office, Tele Maphoto.
The appointment of the two commissioners
was confirmed by Cabinet last month.
According to Godfrey Mdhlulithe, spokesperson
for the Ministry for Agriculture and
Land Affairs, prior to his appointment, Mphela
served in various senior positions in the public
sector, including the Regional Land Claims
Commissioner for Gauteng and North West,
Deputy Chief Land Claims Commissioner, as
well the Director-General of the Institutional
Improvement and Development department
in the office of the Western Cape Province
vehicle at The Junction.
The incident occurred last Friday morning at
around 05:00.
The driver was dead on-scene, and his body
taken to the Letaba Hospital.

Mphela also served as the Acting Chief Land
Claims Commissioner from April 2008.
An attorney by profession, Maphoto has
extensively been engaged in the legal profession,
working for several organisations.
He served as the Chief Legal Counsel for the
Department of Public Enterprises before joining
the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) as the
regional head in the Limpopo Province.
"The Ministry is confident that the two
appointments will result in improved service
delivery in the Commission on Restitution of
Land Rights, and serve as an impetus towards
the acceleration of land and agrarian reform in
the country", said Mdhluli.

’n Hondeskou vind Saterdag om 11:00 by die
THE annual South African Litchi Growers'
Association Research Symposium will be taking
place on May 20 at Platform (In the Star
Spares Building, corner of Agatha street and
Old Gravelotte road) in Tzaneen.
This popular event has been well attended in
the past and it is expected that 2009 will be no
exception.
The programme will cover technical aspects
of the litchi industry, with specific emphasis on
entomology as part of the market access requirements
set for SALGA to gain access to the
USA market amongst others.
Researchers currently engaged in SALGA -
funded research projects will be presenting
their results on topics including the following:

blankets for old age homes that they will be

Crafts Awards launched by the Department of
Arts and Culture to promote the art of craft
nationwide.
Payne gives cause for celebration
MERLE Payne of farm Vergelegen has officially
proved that Letaba deserves a spot in the
fashion worlds of Limpopo, South Africa, and
indeed, the world.
Payne and her crew of four ladies nearly
dominated a national competition hosted by
the Department of Arts and Culture at the
Reserve Bank Conference Centre on April
17.
The competition, initiated by Dr Pallo
Jordan, was launched to promote craft nationwide,
and consists of three categories,
namely textiles, pottery and woodwork.
Payne has been specializing in textiles for
decades, and entered an original wall panel
into the competition.
They came first in Limpopo, and second in
the country.
Jordan, the Minister of Arts and Culture,
bought the winning piece, titled "100% Local".
Payne's workshop, Barok, manufactures
unique wall panels, skirts and handbags.
They employ traditional techniques, used to
decorate traditional attire, to create their exclusive
products.
Their winning panel, as with all their
products, combined a variety of African decorative
techniques.
The soft beige backdrop was the canvas for a
typical broad Venda-style border, Zulu studs
configured into the shapes of San rock art,
geometric shapes inspired by the Indebele
people, symbols seen on sangoma attire,
Shangaan embroidery of wildlife, and more
embroidery and buttons most commonly used
by the Xhosa tribes.
The studs they use are pressed from beverage
cans by means of a machine Payne
invented herself.
Her intertwined African techniques reflect
Payne's ideology in life. She explains that
African cultures present such beauty in their
own right, that combined they can only create
more beauty.
Combining these African techniques, often
reaching as far north as the Congo, can easily
become a messy business. However, through
the eyes of its artistic inventor, these pieces
fuse together into sought-after products being
exported to Italy, Germany and Britain.
Payne, her seamstress and co-designer, two
embroiders and one general worker, together
create items of which no two are the same.
Payne has also been looking for the perfect
pattern for the "African bum" for years, and
although not quite there yet, has created a
design that accentuates the lower back rather
than the bum, and tapers in below the bottom
in order to avoid the A-frame tent-like effect
that is created by skirts.
Payne owned a fashionable boutique in
Melville, Gauteng, called Pearl’s, for 18 years.
After moving back home to Vergelegen, she
realized her talents could help alleviate some
of the poverty in the area.
Payne, living in a timber rich area, realized
that the local men had a much easier time
finding work. The women however often
struggled in that regard.
She started the workshop in the hope that
she could at least help some of the women of
the area.
Little did she know that her workshop
would, three and a half years down the line,
produce international quality products, each
piece an individual, each one worn or displayed
with pride.

SEVERAL felons were convicted at the Letsitele,
Tzaneen and Ritavi courts last week.
Fanuel Mkansi Mathebula was convicted
of raping two individuals, and causing malicious
damage to property. He was given a
double life sentence.
Freeman Mokoena was given one life
sentence for being Mathebula’s accomplice
in one of his rapes and for causing malicious
damage to property.
Mathebula Tiyisekani was convicted of
assault causing grievous bodily harm, and
given a choice between a R2 000 fine or six
months imprisonment.
Fire Dzumanisa Maluleke was convicted
of common robbery and given a R2 000 fine
or 10 months imprisonment.
Jeffrey Matome Mantago was caught in
possession of stolen property. He was given

Several felons convicted
six months imprisonment or a fine of R1
500.
Lawrence Layton Malatjie was convicted
of malicious damage to property, and given a
six month prison sentence, or R800 fine.
Sevelar arrests were also made over the
weekend.
Eighteen people were arrested for various
cases of assault causing grievous bodily
harm, possession of drugs, drinking in public,
and selling liquor without a licence.
Police are also looking for Samson Mhlanga
of Mozambique in connection with a
murder committed at Mabete Farm on February
17.

MORE THAN 3 million people –
mostly poor – around the world
have the deadly mosquito-borne
disease malaria and up to two
million will die from it… only to be
replaced by new victims!
What’s more we in the Letaba
live on the fringe of a major malaria
belt to the east of us including
the Kruger National Park and
Mozambique. Meanwhile, the
Malaria Research Institute in
Tzaneen established in the 1930s
by the late Dr D.S. Annecke is still
working away in our midst with
the emphasis on eradicating the
carrier anopheles mosquito.
Quinine has long been the
standard prophylactic to prevent
succumbing to the disease. Visitors
to the Kruger will know that
they should have a shot of a quinine
derivative before they enter.
But what about a cure if you do
come down with a dose? There is a
chemical compound called
artemisinin which offers a 90%
cure rate but is highly expensive to
produce in a very slow process. It
is the most powerful drug available
in the fight against the disease.
It is so scarce that most of the
fatalities die for the want of it.
But now this problem has been
solved by one of the new generation
of so-called
‘synthetic biologists’ whose science
is genetics based. Dr Jay
Keasling. A chemical engineer at
the University of California, has
applied engineering principles to
turning single-celled organisms
like bacteria and yeast into tiny
‘chemical factories’ that can build
new curative compounds from
scratch.
Dr Keasling utilized this
break-through to boost the production
of artemisinin from sweet
wormwood in which it occurs naturally.
He produced a molecular
tool kit in which wormwood genes
are inserted into a simple yeast to
start a process which produces

large volumes of the precious drug
within a few hours. It’s a mass-production
process which reduces the
manufacturing costs from dollars
to cents per dose.
That’s the good news; and
artemisinin will available by mid
-2010 to doctors treating malaria
cases. But Dr Keasling has not left
it at that. To make sure that patients
actually benefit from these savings,
he has worked with university
officials and pharmaceutical
companies to ensure that no
one –including him – could profit
from his newly patented system.
“It’s not that we’re against companies
making money,’ he says.
‘But we don’t want them to gouge
the poor. One company, Sanofi-Aventis,
has already signed up
to start production of Dr Keaslings
customized yeast cells and will
sell the drug at cost.
Keasling’s public spirited attitude
proves three things: *scientists
can share; *pharmaceutical
companies can put patients before
profits, and *synthetic biology can
be a force for change. Meanwhile,
this unassuming scientist is developing
new projects which will
benefit mankind. He is now working
on bio fuels. The American
Department of Energy has placed
him at the head of a five-year
programme to develop cost-effective,
environmentally friendly bio
fuels
A remarkable man working in an
exciting new science! Don’t be
surprised if in the near future he is
nominated for a Nobel Prize for his
humanitarian approach to science.
In a week or two I will run an
article on research in South Africa
on genetically synthesizing a vaccine
for malaria which will in the
end reduce the global infection
rate by millions of people per year.

your ward
GRAHAM McComb, Caucus Leader of the DA
in Tzaneen, writes: I would like to clear up
some confusion that was apparent during the
latest by-election in Ward 15 Tzaneen on the 6
May 2009.
Municipal Elections are different to National
Elections amongst other things as follows:-
In Municipal Elections, the residents of a
Ward (a bounded area) vote for a candidate
(person) who can be an Independent but is
usually associated with a registered political
p a r t y.
The successful Ward Candidate (the candidate
who collects the most votes) represents
the residents that live in the ward at the GTM
Council.
The municipal by-election of the 6th May
was as a result of the passing away of my
colleague Cllr. Jan deLang who was the incumbent
Ward Councillor in Ward 15.
The boundary of Ward 15 is the area that is
formed by the older part of Tzaneen and is on
the CBD side of the R71 Phalaborwa road and
includes Arbor Park, Fauna Park, Flora Park,
Sentra Park, Medi Park etc, etc.
Therefore only SA citizens who live in the
suburbs south of the R71 can register & vote in
Ward 15 at a Municipal Election at one of the
three voting stations which are Emmanuel
Assembly, Tzaneen Primary School and Unicorn
Primary. If you live in the above area but
have registered elsewhere you have been given
the incorrect information and must re-register
in Ward 15. You can register at the Tzaneen
Municipal Offices at the IEC office during
normal GTM office hours. You do not have to
wait for the special registration weekends that
occur a few months before an election. Take
your ID book to register next time you go to the
municipal offices ie when you renew your car
licence.
SA citizens who are residents of Aqua Park,
north of the R71 (Phalaborwa Road) are in
Ward 14 and must register at Jetty 3. Ward 14
has a huge boundary that extends from Aqua
Park, around the western side of the Tzaneen
dam to Politsi, then to Westfalia, around the
western side of Modjadjiskloof, up the
Koedoes River valley near Mooketsi and then
over the mountain including Houtbosdorp
towards Haenertsburg , but not including
Haenertsburg. There are 6 other voting stations
in Ward 14 besides Jetty 3.
Ward 16 is even bigger than Ward 14 and
starts at Haenertsburg and extends down the
Magoebaskloof and Georges Valleys including
Agatha and over towards the Letsitele River
valley. The ward then skirts the eastern side of
Tzaneen Town and extends to Ledzee, Yamorna
and then on towards Letaba Estates on the
northern side of the Letaba River. There are 8
voting stations in Ward 16.
In a National Election you can vote at any
voting station, provided you are registered
somewhere in South Africa. However, if you do
not vote at the station where you are registered,
you have to fill in a special form, which is time
consuming and a nuisance. You also only get
the National Ballot if you outside your
Province.
In conclusion, I would like to take the
opportunity to thank the many voters in Ward
15 who considered it important enough to
come out and cast their votes. The reason for
this letter is also to thank those that turned out
to vote but were turned away due to the
confusion as explained above.
The result of the by election was that the Mrs.
Rona McGaffin (DA) is now the Ward Councillor
with 1174 votes (67%), the ANC 448
votes (26 %), the ACDP 93 votes (5%) and the
FF+ 34 votes (2 %).

VAN RENSBURG is 'n van om te onthou.
Willem van Rensburg is 'n prokureur van
Roodepoort, en het aan die begin van die jaar
'n praktyk in Tzaneen geopen.
Van Rensburgs Prokureurs en Akte Vervaardigers
is 'n belowende nuwe prokureursfirma,
met Van Rensburg-bande in Natal,
Lichtenburg en Roodepoort.
Van Rensburg se pa is al vir langer as 50 jaar
in die bedryf, met sy neef en neef se seun ook
al volgend in sy pa se spore.
As gereelde besoekers van die Kruger Nasionale
Park (KNP), het die van Rensburg-gesin
gereeld in die omgewing gekom, maar
nooit in Tzaneen self nie. Toe hulle onlangs
Tzaneen vir die eerste keer besoek het, het van
Rensburg en sy gesin verlief op die dorp
geraak.
Toe die idee om Tzaneen toe te trek eers
publiek gemaak is, kon niks hulle keer nie. Van
Rensburg het 'n soliede professionele verhouding
met Alliance Mining Corporation wat
graag 'n tak naby Polokwane wou open.
Alliance was vuur en vlam oor die idee.
Hierdie gesinsman van RAU is ook 'n ere
veldwagter en doen reeds vir baie jare werk vir
die KNP. Met die wildtuin diep in sy hart is 'n
skuif nader daaraan nóg 'n pluspunt.
Die gesin het besluit dat dit tyd was om uit
die stad te kom, en met van Rensburg se
agtergrond in die mynbedryf, bied Phalaborwa
ook baie besigheid.
So bevind van Rensburg, sy vrou Sheila, en
twee kinders, Alex en Winita, hulself in
Tzaneen. Van Rensburg se oogappel dogter is
nou in graad een in Laerskool Tzaneen. Alex is
tans in graad 8 en skoolgaande by Hoërskool
Ben Vorster. Hul oudste, Damien, het verlede
jaar vir die o/19 Sharks span uitgedraf wat ook
die o/19 trofee verower het. Hopelik sal hy

gemeenskap nie net sy nuwe bure nie, maar sy
nuwe vriende.
Tzaneen se nuutste prokureur wil teruggee
aan die gemeenskap: "Ek wil nie net vat nie."
Nes van Rensburg sy gesinslewe met integriteit
en absolute waardes bestuur, so doen
hy ook met sy besigheid. Hy wil graag die
stigma van hartelose, gulsige prokureurs
breek, en deur sy aksies bewys dat die in sy
professie wel omgee.
Van Rensburg wil met hierdie houding die
Tzaneen-mark betree en uiteindelik sy praktyk
uitbrei. Hy sien kans vir groot dinge, en wens
om die gemeenskappe van Tzaneen, Polokwane,
Phalaborwa en alle omliggende areas te

undergo a major upgrade and refurbishment.
The premises will be closed for
three months with effect from June
1 for this purpose.
The gardens, which have attracted
many day visitors for wedding
photographs, picnics and
light refreshments, will also be
closed for this period.
The Hilton-Barber family, which
has operated the guest house for
the past 18 years, has entered into
a lease with a professional food
architect and caterer from Belgian,
Steven Jacobs. Jacobs and his wife
Sophie are recent arrivals in the
Agatha district.
Previously they operated an
up-market restaurant in Antwerp
and an events company which
handled conferences, product
launches, fashion shows and weddings.

sedert 27 Maart 1954 die eienaars van die
pragtige gebou in King Edward rylaan.
Die gebou was voorheen die Moedervreug
kraaminrigting. Gedurende 1961 is die
1000ste baba daar gebore. Die inrigting het sy
deure gesluit toe Van Velden Hospitaal geopen
is in 1968. Sederdien word die gebou verh

Die inkomste van die verhurings is die SAFV
se hoof bron van inkomste en met die inkomste

nie meer winsgewend kon funksioneer nie

KG Linde en sy personeel wil graag al die
klante wat hulle getrou en lojaal ondersteun
het, bedank.
Ek was vir 11 en ‘n half jaar betrokke by
IEASA (Instituut vir EiendomsAgente in
Suid-Afrika), Limpopo het 'n inligtings sessie
op 7 Mei vir al Tzaneen se eiendoms
agente aangebied.
'n "Ysbreker" is aangebied met aanvangs
van die sessie deur Irma van Aarde van
Kruger Nagel en de Jager. Agente is opgedeel
in groepe, nie in agentskap verband
nie en moes 'n huis bou uit materiale wat
aan hulle verskaf is, van toilet rolle, rekkies,
vuurhoutjies, tou & karton. Die "huis" moes
bemark word voor al die ander agente.
Die borge het as beoordeelaars opgetree
en wenners vir die beste "huisies" en bemarking
daarvan is aangewys.
Jana Smit van IEASA het al die agente
teenwoordig ingelig van die rol en funksie
van die instansie en hoe die voordele
die besigheid en het baie goeie verhoudinge
met al my klante opgebou.

Unity celebrates Mother’s Day
UNITY Primary celebrated Mother’s Day in an alternative
fashion last Friday. All Unity girls got to dress up as
mothers as part of the celebrations. Various learners were
nominated for Best Dressed Learner-Mom, front: Lebo
Maloba, Praise Mphjana, Abertina Khosa, Ntiloboko
Baloyi and Pabalelo Makhurupetsi. Back: Tebatso Mohale,
Tshadile Rasebotsa, Tsakane Mushwana, Naznin Patel,
Mapula Makgoba and Nthabiseng Masebe.

TSAKANI Shilumani (gr. 10) and
Khutso Matlou (gr. 9) are two of 7
RCL representatives who were selected
to represent Mopani district
on Provincial level.
The Department of Education
initiated the workshop, attended
by 260 female and 259 male rcl
representatives, from May 1 - 3.
The objective of the workshop
was to address the role RCL's can
play to help learners face and deal
with difficulties that can restrict
their success at school.
The workshop was guided by
officials of the Department of Education
and a committee was selected
to represent Mopani District
on provincial level. Shilumani
will be chairing the committee
and Matlou was appointed
t r e a s u r e r.

Plasies hou muntlegging vir liefdadigheid
ONS GEE OM!! Dit was die boodskap
wat die Plasies Vrydag aan mede skoliere
en Tzaneen uitgestuur het toe hul
'n muntlegging ten bate van die FTLT
(Focus Team Leadership Training - Going
North) gelê het.
Die organisasie poog om mede
Christene en Suid-Afrikaners te inspireer
om 'n tasbare bydrae te lewer,
om 'n verskil te maak in kindersoldate
in Uganda se lewens.
Die kinders word op 'n vroeë
ouderdom ontvoer en gedwing om
soldate te word en wrede oorlogsmisdade
uit te voer.
Van die kinders slaag daarin om te
ontsnap en hul soek skuiling by
vlugtelingskampe waar hulle broodnodige
basiese lewensnoodsaaklikhede
benodig.
FTLT beplan 'n uitreikaksie in Junie
2009 na Uganda om 'n daadwerklike
verskil in die kinders se lewens te
maak.
Skool kry nuwe baadjie
LAERSKOOL Duiwelskloof is besig om ‘n nuwe baadjie aan te trek.
Die departement van onderwys het ‘n paar skole geidentifiseer wat
besig is om gerestoureer te word.
Hulle hoop om mede Christene en
Suid-Afrikaners te inspireer om in
hulle beroepsveld en invloedsfeer 'n
verskil te maak in die kinders se
lewens.
Soos 'n leerling tereg opmerk,"Hierdie
kinders, net soos ons,
het 'n reg om hul kinderlewe te geniet

Fun at animal farm
IN April the Grade R&0 and Grade 1 groups of
Meridian College visited the Mangela Animal
Farm and Play Park.
It was great fun to
touch, feel and watch
a variety of animals.
The play park was the
highlight of the day,
with “real” cars, tractors,
trucks and motorbikes
to ride on.
The jumping castle
left the children exhausted,
but still excited.
The outing was a
huge success and
management wants
to thank the teachers,
Anette Malan, Euna
van Zyl and Brenda
Moseamedi who accompanied
the children
on these trips.

Stanford Lake College hosted
a very successful African
Regional Round Square Conference
from Wednesday,
April 29, to Sunday, May 3,
2009.
The Conference theme was
"A new look at the environment!"
and the main aim
was to teach delegates that
the environment is not only
nature, but also your actions -
what you say and what you
do.
On May 1 delegates were
seen walking about with
chains around their necks.
This activity was done for
three reasons: to experience
the slavery of many years ago;
to reflect on issues in their
own lives that are holding
them back and thirdly, "to free
the children from the
shackles of privilege", which
was one of Kurt Hahn's
(Founder of Round Square)
famous sayings.
A visit to the local organic
farm, Wegraakbosch, gave
them more insight into the
management of a sustainable
farm.
Delegates were kept busy
with service projects at the
Appel School in Magoebaskloof.
Here, they equipped a
science lab, removed exotic
plants and vegetation and
built a vegetable cage to prevent
monkeys from stealing
the produce.
Many discussions were
held with the delegates and
one of the most interesting
topics was the influences of
the South African elections
on the rest of Africa.
Other keynote speakers included
Prof Hugo van Rooyen
from the University of Johannesburg,
who introduced
the seven components of the
environment; Dr Antoaneta
Letsoalo, Head of Climate
Change, LEDET, Limpopo,
helped the delegates to calculate
their personal environment
footprints, and they
came to the conclusion that
they would need seven earths
to sustain their current lifestyles.
During the closing function,
all 150 children and 40
adults from schools in Ghana,
Kenya, Namibia, Canada, India
and South Africa, pledged
in their conference statement
to be part of the process to
create a more sustainable
world. This was done to the
well-known song "Don't kill
the World" and left everyone
feeling uplifted and responsible
for their own actions.

Geniet Kamer se middag/aandgholf
DIE LEKKERSTE gholfdag van die jaar, die
aand- en middagkompetisie van die Tzaneense
Sakekamer, vind weer eerskomende Vrydag by
die Tzaneense Buiteklub plaas.
Aandgholf sorg vir sy eie pret en vermaak en
met 9 putjies wat laatmiddag afgehandel word,
gevolg deur ‘n heerlike ete voor die
aand-gedeelte begin, gaan dit weer ‘n baie
genotvolle dag wees.
Slegs ‘n beperkte aantal spanne kan in die
kompetisie speel en daarom word besighede of
organisasies wat spanne wil inskryf aangeraai
om dit so gou moontlik te doen.
Die kompetisie neem die vorm van ‘n vierbal
"American Scramble" aan en die hele
geleentheid is daarop gemik om ontspanne
gholf te speel en die aand te geniet.
‘n Groot aantal pryse sal weer op die spel wees
en die inskrywingsgeld van R800 per span sluit
die middag - en aandgholf, aandete, ververings
op die baan en groot pret in.

Challenge this weekend
LOCAL cyclists can get ready for the challenging
Pricewaterhouse-Coopers Magoebaskloof
Cycle Challenge 2009 on May16.
The race will be hosted by die Polokwane
Peddlers.
This is the ideal opportunity for both young
and old to cycle in the scenic Magoebaskloof.
The race will start at 07:30 on Saturday Morning
16 May.
The start and finish of the race will be at the
Merensky High School outside Tzaneen and
the race will be timed by SS Timing.
Three race distances will be on offer to cater
for all levels of fitness (100km, 70km, 30km
and 10km).
The 100km will follow the challenging Magoebaskloof
road to Haenertsburg.
From Haenertsburg the cyclists will take the
scenic George's Valley, around the Tzaneen
Dam and back to Merensky High School.
The 70km will follow the challenging Magoebaskloof

The 30km and 10km race will follow a route
around Tzaneen Dam.
The following prizes will be up for grabs:
100km race for overall first place men and
ladies: R1700.
100km race for overall second place men
and ladies: R1 400.
100km race for overall third place men and
ladies: R900.
70km race for overall first place men and
ladies: R750.
70km race for overall second place men and
ladies: R500.
70km race for overall third place men and
ladies: R250.
Hotspot: R300.
All other category prizes: 30km and 10km
Races - Prizes to under 12's and under 14's.
(Winners can only qualify for one prize eg. if
you are the first lady (overall) then you receive
the R 1 700 prize only.
You will not be entitled to receive the prize
for the category win as well).
Entries at Merensky High School; and Saturday
16 May from 06:00 - 07:00 at the start.

Cyclists should note that all GNC cycling
rules will apply and that all cyclists will be
required to wear a cycling helmet.
Food and beverages will be available at the
start and finish.
Ambulance and emergency services will be
available on the route.
Regulations issued by "Cycling South Africa"
(CSA) will also compel cyclists to take out a
cycling license.
Cyclists need to be a member of an affiliated
cycling club to qualify for a CSA license.
Cyclist who do not take out a cycling license
can be forced in future to buy a day license at
all CSA races for about R30 a race.

THE second annual Mountain2Mountain
National Road
Cycle Challenge hits Tzaneen
on July 15.
Last year this event consisted
of a 108km National
Classic Road Race timed by
Championship and a 34km
Family Fun Run.
This year not only is there
the 108km National Classic
and the 34 km Fun Run timed
by WinningTime (timing
agents of the Argus), there is
also a mini Mountain2Mountain
for Pre-School children
on July 24 (and a race for
primary-school children is
also being planned - watch
this space).
Added to this the 108km
race also has two extra categories
- a junior and senior
high school relay with Merensky
and Stanford having indicated
that they will be entering.
The 108km National Classic
is sanctioned by Cycling
South-Africa and enjoys the
same status and exclusivity as
the Argus or the 94.7.

Die wegspring is by die Constantia boeresaal.
Alle fiets geesdriftiges word uitgenooi

T-junction turn left to
Tarantaalrand and at the
Tarantaalrand Crossing they
turn right towards Tzaneen.
Cyclists continue along this
road past Zabana, Bosveld

Cyclists continue around
the Tzaneen dam and end up
back at the starting point.
This event will attract national
attention and bring
much needed revenue into
our community.

Letaba het Saterdag ‘n groot rol in diè klub se
oorwinning oor Polisie in Pietersburg
gespeel.
Mos het tweekeer agter Polisie se doellyn
gaan kuier en was deurgaans ‘n doring in die
tuisspan se vlees.
Heelagter, Giepie Labuschagnè het ook ‘n
skitterende langafstand drie gaan druk om aan
Letaba ‘n oorwinning van 17-10 oor die Bobbies
te gee.
Letaba se tweedespan was heeltemal te sterk
vir Polisie en het gemaklik met 55-0 gewen.
Die ou staatmaker, Karel Theunissen, het drie
drieë in diè oorwinning gedruk en begin al
meer lyk na die speler van ouds.
Ongelukkig het Letaba se derdespan naelskraap
met 17-19 teen Polisie verloor.
Eerskomende Saterdag is daar groot rugby
op Tzaneen wanneer Letaba met vier spanne
teen Potties op die skougronde gaan speel.
Die eerste wedstryd begin reeds om 13:30
wanneer die Nkowankowa Jeugklub, wat onder
Letaba se vaandel uitdraf, in aksie gaan
wees.
Daarna speel Letaba se ander drie spanne
teen Potties en ‘n hele agtermiddag se goeie
rugby word in die vooruitsig gestel.
Dit is die eerste keer in baie jare dat 4 spanne
in Letaba se kleure uitdraf en die Nkowankowa
Jeugspan is een van die opwindendste
ontwikkelings in rugby plaaslik. Diè spannetjie
verbeter bykans met elke wedstryd en beide
die publiek en besighede kan gerus diè entoesiastiese
spannetjie ondersteun.

de Jager still confident before their run of bad
luck during the race.
NAVIGATOR, Grant Martin and driver, Mohammed Moosa came second in class S3 and second
overall at last weekend’s Tzaneen Rally.

MOHAMMED Moosa and Grant Martin (Total
Evolution Toyota Auris) claimed a well deserved
second in class S3 as well as second
overall during last weekend's Bathroom
Bizarre Tzaneen Rally.
The team fought hard to overcome a time
loss in the first stage after their car experienced
some technical difficulties resulting in a loss of
power. The team also incurred a 50 second
time penalty while trying to repair their technical
fault.
Mohammed and Grant showed some real
sportsmanship by giving up their class S3
trophies at the prize giving. The team normally
competes at national level and seeing that this
was a regional rally, they decided not to keep
their trophies but pass them on to the Polokwane-based
team of Jaco and George Baker,
who finished third in class S3.
The second local team to cross the line was
that of Eddie Simpson and Marco Lottering in
their yellow Simpson Motors Opel Corsa. The
team finished a very credible 7th overall and
2nd in class S1. "We were on pace for most of
the stages but lost some time to our class rivals
during the third stage. Other than that, we had
a pretty clean run through the rest of the
stages," Marco said.
Last but certainly not least was debutant
Pieter Pilusa with stand-in navigator, Riaan
Erasmus. The team might have finished last, but
acquitted themselves well in the trying conditions.
"It was lots of fun and having an
experienced navigator certainly helped a lot. It
was my dream to finish the rally, and my dream
came true," a delighted Pieter said at the end of
the event.
The Meyjes and De Jager Motorsport team's
dreams of claiming a class podium at their
home event was shattered by a lower control
arm, in stage two of the rally. The team started
off well, beating their closest class S1 rivals by
34 seconds in the very slippery stage one, and
in the process posted an excellent 2nd fastest
time in the stage.
The 30km long
stage two was also
going great until a
muddy right-handed
corner caught them
out. "We slid wide
and basically just put
a wheel on to the
grass. Concealed in
the grass was a huge
tree stump that we hit
quite hard, bending
the lower control arm
which left us stranded
in the stage with a mere 3km to go. It's a hard
pill to swallow, especially after leading class
S1 and lying second overall," a disappointed
Erik explained.
This retirement brings the team’s 100%
finishing record (11 rallies) to a sad end.
Three of Tzaneen's local rally teams will be
competing in the third round of the Northern
Regions Rally Championship, the PMC Rally,
that will be held in and around the Bapsfontein
area on the 6th of June, while Mohammed
Moosa will be back in action on the 12th of
June, competing in the fourth round of the
South African Rally Championships.
