VOL 42 | NO 5
INFORMATION FOR MEMBERS OF THE EDGEWOOD HIGH SCHOOL COMMUNITY
Catholic Schools
Raise the Standards
National Catholic Schools
Week is the annual celebration of
Catholic education in the United
States. During the week, schools
and parishes focus on the value
Catholic education provides to young people and Catholic education’s
contributions to our church, our communities, and our nation.
The annual observance began Jan. 27 and continued to Feb. 2.
Edgewood High School celebrated National Catholic Schools Week
with St. Ambrose Academy during a Mass, activities for students,
faculty and the community at large. Various Catholic schools
throughout the Diocese of Madison developed and promoted their
own CSW activities this year.
The theme for Catholic Schools Week 2013 is "Catholic Schools
Raise the Standards." Catholic schools are noted for their academic
excellence and high moral standards. This year's theme celebrates the
constant attention Catholic educators pay to increasing the learning
and growth in faith of all students. The theme follows on the launch
of a new initiative, the “National Standards and Benchmarks for
Effective Catholic Elementary and Secondary Schools,” to ensure
consistent high standards at Catholic schools across the country.
This year's logo illustrates a chart of steady growth culminating in
the highest achievement of them all, a cross representing the faith that
underscores all Catholic education. The logo provides a visual
expression of the essence of Catholic education to enhance the week's
celebration.
During this time, we celebrate the many gifts Edgewood and its
extended community have given and continue to give, their talents
and energies to further the mission of Catholic education. I wish to
acknowledge and celebrate the hearts and minds of the many gifted
and talented teachers who dedicate themselves to the Dominican
tradition of excellence in education. Finally, we appreciate and give
thanks for the enthusiasm, energy, and diverse life each and every
student, parent, and staff member who contribute to our school. We
celebrate the promise everyone holds for the extension of our mission.
Happy Catholic Week!
Fine Arts Festival Fast Approaching
For the past thirteen years, Edgewood’s Fine Arts Festival has
offered students an opportunity to recognize how the arts are a part of
everyone’s daily life. We set aside one week during late winter to
celebrate. Please join us at anytime during the week of February 19-
22. The success of this week is due in large part to Carrie Backman
and the committee’s efforts. We thank them and the committee for
their efforts. Check out the blog:
Free Tutoring Available
During and After School
By Monica Ladell, Student Services Counselor
Edgewood’s National Honor Society members are available to tutor
their fellow students during and after school in almost ALL subjects
taught at EHS. Students in need of some extra academic help can meet
with tutors one-on-one during any free mods, study alongside tutors in
ASP during Mods 7, 8, and 9, or work with tutors after school in the
Commons on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:45 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
To request tutoring, students can contact their counselor or fill out a
form in one of the tutoring request boxes located in Student Services, the
Library, and the Commons. Bottom line: Help is available—all you have
to do is ask!
EHS PRESIDENT SEARCH UPDATE
The Search Committee is pleased to announce that a slate of
more than 80 very qualified candidates expressed interest in the role
of President. After conducting interviews with seven individuals, the
full Search Committee further winnowed the candidate pool to just
three for a second round of interviews that occurred during the week
of January 7. Faculty and staff members met the candidates and
asked questions, and the finalists also met with other representatives
of Edgewood’s many constituencies.
The Board of Trustees submitted their final selection to the
congregation of the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa for approval, and
Edgewood can now proudly announce that EHS alumnus Michael
Elliott ’77, who has also served as Board chair, has been chosen to
head the school. Watch for more information about Mike in an
upcoming issue of Edge on the News.
Welcome to 2013
By Michelle Borleske, Counselor
Seniors: New Transcripts & Updated Grade Reports
Some of you may receive a request for mid-year grades from your
college or university admissions offices. Several schools now utilize a
“self-report” system, which lists your completed fall classes and the
grades you earned. Other schools will request a new official transcript
to be submitted, and some of you may personally choose to submit
your grades to verify how well you continue to do in high school.
If you want or need to request a new mid-year transcript, please
order it directly from Docufide by Parchment, just as you did for the
original application submission. Your Edgewood/Docufide transcript
will be updated with your first semester grades in early January and
your cumulative grade point average will have been adjusted
accordingly.
If you have any questions about the Common Application Mid-
Year Report or ordering your newest transcript, please contact your
counselor or the Registrar in Student Services.
Seniors: Common Application Mid-Year Reports
Did you apply to colleges using the Common Application? If so,
CommonApp requires that a mid-year grade report be submitted
confirming your fall grades and continued progress toward
graduation. After January 7, please remember to order an updated
transcript to be sent to CommonApp just as you did for your original
application process. In mid-January, your counselor will submit the
official “Mid-Year Report” for the CommonApp as well, so be sure to
follow up with them accordingly.
Seniors: Financial Aid – FAFSA and CSS/Profile
Now is the time to complete your Free Application for Federal
Student Aid or FAFSA. This is the free application that is required by
colleges if you want to be considered for any type of federal aid,
grants, loans, and even college scholarships in many cases. There are
private schools that also require you to complete the CSS Profile for
their own unique needs. Please read materials sent or check with your
colleges to ensure that you are completing all of the required
materials. Here are the links that you’ll want to access. Both can also
be found on the EHS homepage along with the December financial
aid PowerPoint presentation:
fafsa.ed.gov
busy schedules.
The Junior/Parent/Counselor meeting is an important step in
planning for your child’s future endeavors. The following topics will
be covered:
• Review of PLAN, PSAT and Strong Interest Inventory results
• Discussion of ACT vs. SAT for your child and test
AP Exams – Right Around the Corner!
By Monica Ladell, Counselor
Advanced Placement Exams will be administered at Edgewood
High School starting on May 6 and will continue through May 15.
Students who are enrolled in an AP course will automatically be
registered to take the corresponding AP exam. The fee for these exams
was included in the course fee assessed at the beginning of the school
year and no additional payment is necessary.
In addition to exams for AP courses offered at Edgewood, each
year there are several students who have been studying independently
for AP exams not offered as courses. Although the student will not
receive credit on his/her transcript for a corresponding course, he/she
may still take an exam in any subject to potentially earn college credit.
Each exam that is NOT offered as an EHS course has a $100 exam
fee. If you have been studying independently for a specific AP exam,
are interested in taking an exam for a course you are not enrolled in,
or have any questions regarding AP exams, please contact Mrs. Ladell
in Student Services by the end of February for a registration form.
National Honor Society News
By Monica Ladell, NHS Advisor
Many questions regarding NHS have arisen in the
past few weeks, with most centering on admission.
NHS membership is by invitation. There are two times
in one’s high school career in which invitations to apply
are sent to students. One occurs in January of junior
year. If a student has a cumulative grade point average
of 3.500 or above and at least 100 service hours on file in Campus
Ministry by January 1 of junior year, he or she is eligible to apply.
If one does not meet those requirements during junior year, a
second chance to apply occurs in September of senior year. If the
minimum grade point average is met, and 100 service hours are on
file by September 1, one is eligible and can expect a letter of
invitation to apply.
The following is an excerpt from the student handbook regarding
membership. Please refer to the handbook for a detailed description.
Membership:
Membership is open to juniors and seniors who:
1. Have attended Edgewood High School for the equivalent of
one semester.
2. Have a cumulative scholastic average of 3.500 or better.
3. At the time of application, a minimum of 100 hours of service
must be documented and on file with Campus Ministry. This
must be done by the end of first semester junior year or by the
beginning of senior year.
4. Students who meet the scholastic and service requirements are
then evaluated by the Faculty Council on the basis of
leadership, service, and character. No student is inducted simply
based on grade point average. The National Honor Society
strives to recognize the total student – one who excels in
leadership, scholarship, service, and character.
Selection Process:
A more detailed account of the selection process will be found in the
student handbook.
1. The national guidelines for NHS call for five (5) faculty
members to serve on the Faculty Council. The Faculty Council
reviews applications and vote on acceptance. Advisors and
assistant principal are non-voting members. .
2. Students who are invited to apply fill out and submit a resume
(format will be made available) and answer an essay question
about their leadership and service roles.
3. There is no set number of NHS members. A student requires
three ‘yes’ votes from the committee to be selected to
membership. This process usually takes two to three weeks.
Activities:
Members are expected to provide additional service for the good of
the organization and school. This includes:
1. Ambassador Table: Students serve as greeter, tour guides, and
runners for the office staff. Each NHS student is to give one
mod per cycle at the table.
2. Tutoring: Students will provide peer tutoring for the ASP
program or through student services.
3. A fundraiser to cover the costs of the Induction Ceremony and
Graduation Honor Cords.
4. Participate in a variety of service opportunities, including open
houses, graduation ceremony, new student induction, Badger
Conference greeters, and other activities that arise.
Dominican Mission at a Glance:
Junior Mission Trip to Chicago
By Dylan Todd, EHS Junior
At the beginning of December, 13 juniors, Campus Ministers Amy
Richardson and Julia Slotnick, and Freshman FIT Religion teacher Al
Minnaert spent three days serving in Chicago. During those three days,
we spent time serving at a variety of places, including a rehabilitation
center, an elementary school, a homeless shelter and a nursing home, and
also attended a celebration of the Mass. Out of all the places we went, the
one that was most meaningful to me was serving at the homeless shelter.
A group of us were asked to sing Christmas carols for the people at the
homeless shelter. As soon as we started singing the entire room just lit up!
People were singing along, yelling out requests, and having a great time.
I looked around the room and there was a huge smile on everyone’s face.
It warmed my heart with happiness and joy!
The entire trip was very meaningful and life-changing for me. Not
only did it help me develop a closer relationship with the other trip
members, but it also opened my eyes to the real world. There are a lot of
people who live a very unfortunate life, and they go through things that
no one should have to go through in this world. No one knows if he or
she is going to end up in jail or even end up living on the streets. This
experience made me realize I need to cherish the things and the people
I have in my life. I do not know what my future holds for me. Frankly,
no one knows what the future holds, which is why people need to be
thankful for their family, friends, and a place where they can rest their
head.
I also learned that God is with us wherever we go in life. God could
be in the same room with us; we just don’t know it. We all struggle in our
lives, and if we ever feel that we are alone and no one is there to help us
out, God is always there to help us. All in all, this trip was one of the
most amazing and experiences of my life, and it has helped me learn to
be a better person!

Friendly Reminders
to ALL Students
and Families
By Shannon McDonough, Assistant Principal
Your students have been reminded about
the following points through homeroom and
Commons announcements. Parents please
speak with your children about these topics
and make sure our young people understand
the school rules.
Late Arrival/Early Dismissal Privileges:
Sophomores, juniors, and seniors in good
discipline/academic standing who have Mod 1
open and receive written parental permission
may request late arrival privileges. All students
must be on time for the homeroom hour,
which is scheduled directly after Mod 1. Any
tardies to homeroom may terminate the
student’s late arrival privilege.
Sophomores, juniors, and seniors in good
discipline/academic standing who have one or
more unassigned mods at the end of the school
day may request early dismissal privileges for
semester two. Mods must be consecutive and
include the last mod of the school day.
Students who are eligible for Late
Arrival/Early Dismissal (LA/ED) privileges
must complete a LA/ED Parental Permission
Form. The deadline for the LA/ED forms was
Friday, January 25, 2013. Students with
LA/ED privileges may remain in the school to
work in the computer lab, conduct research in
the Library, lift weights, or work with an
individual teacher. Students are not allowed to
sit in the Commons or roam the halls.
LA/ED must be officially added to the
student’s schedule prior to the student coming
late or leaving early from school; otherwise, the
student may be considered off campus.
Consequences may apply. It is the student’s
responsibility to check their schedule on
PowerSchool to confirm these privileges have
been granted. LA/ED is not allowed on special
schedule days (Liturgy, Pep rally, Early
Dismissal, etc.)
When Students Are Absent or Tardy
We remind parents/guardians that they
must call the school between 7:30 a.m. and
9:00 a.m. on days when their child will be
absent. Parents or guardians may also call the
preceding evening, or before 7:30 a.m. and
leave a message on the answering machine.
Please contact 608.257.1023 x126.
Parental cooperation in this area is vital,
not only for accurate record keeping, but also
to ensure that both home and school are aware
of a student’s whereabouts at all times.
Parking in the Area Neighborhoods
Parents, please have a conversation with
your student drivers about common courtesy
when parking in area neighborhoods. Parking
in front of driveways, blocking fire hydrants,
driving too fast, not turning stereos down, and
littering are all complaints neighbors have
about our students parking in the area
neighborhoods. For the most part, our student
drivers are very good but it only takes one
careless student to allow a pop can to fall out
of a car and not pick it up to have all EHS
students labeled as litterbugs—and I think we
would all agree that one student is too many.
Appropriate Drop-off Sites for
Parents and Safety Practices
When you are picking up or dropping off
your children, there are a few safety and
courtesy reminders that we would like you to
please keep in mind.
Remember, before and after school
PLEASE do not drop off your child in the
back of the school near the Athletic Offices or
in the Marshall Lot. This is prohibited and you
can be fined. Before school is an especially
critical time. This is when teachers are parking
and many grade school children are walking up
and down from the Campus School to start
their day. Please, for the safety of all our
children, do not drive down or drop off your
children near this area. We also request you
avoid dropping off at the intersection of
Edgewood Avenue and Jefferson Drive. It is a
dangerous intersection that is especially a
problem when snow narrows the roadways.
The angle of the intersection makes it difficult
to view oncoming traffic and any students
walking up to meet their ride. Additional
vehicles waiting to pick up their children cause
further danger to everyone.
When you drop off or pick up your child in
the Circle Drive, please pull forward. Vehicles
become backed up when parents do not pull
forward. It only makes sense that if five
vehicles are able to drop off or pick up at one
time, congestion would be decreased. The
main cause of the frustration we all feel in the
parking lot is when vehicles pull to the exact
front of the school doors to allow children to
exit after collecting all their books, band
equipment, athletic bags and taking time to say
good-bye. If all vehicles pulled forward as far as
they could in the circle or in the student
parking lot and made sure exiting passengers
were prepared to climb out, the parking
frustrations will improve for all.
WE NEED THE HELP OF ALL PARENTS/
GUARDIANS WHEN IT COMES TO PICK-
UP AND DROP-OFF PROCEDURES!
Handicap Stalls
There are six handicap parking spaces in
the student parking lot. These spaces must be
kept clear of all vehicles. Parents, students and
visitors who have a handicap sticker, plate or
temporary pass need to be able to access these
stalls at all times. Parents waiting to pick up
their child need to use other alternative
parking stalls and not block or park in the
designated handicap stalls. Violators can be
fined $500 for parking, dropping off, or idling
in a handicap stall.
Dress Code
Please remember that skirts must be to the
knee (not just ‘close to it’), and tops cannot
display any cleavage or midriff areas. This
includes skirts or long shirts with ‘leggings’
underneath. The skirt still must be to the knee.
Yoga/stretch pants are not allowed. Gentlemen,
please no baggy, boxer look; use belts to keep
pants up. It is important to note Liturgy/Dress
up days on your home calendars. Students who
arrive at school out of dress code will be
assisted in contacting a parent/guardian to
bring correct clothing for the school day. Please
refer to the Student Handbook for further
clarification to our Dress Code policy. A
special thank you goes to all parents who have
experienced this policy first hand. All have
been very supportive and accommodating.
Your support has been wonderful.
Electronic Devices
Electronic devices are not allowed during
the school day. Students are allowed to access
phone messages/texts as well as make phone
calls during open mods and lunch mods in the
designated area only, which is outside the
Common’s doors.
Cell Phone/Electronic Device Consequences:
• Offense #1 – Phone held for the day; letter
sent home
• Offense #2 – Phone held for the remainder
of the week, letter sent home
• Offense #3 – Phone held until a parent
meeting can be arranged
***All students begin Semester 2 with a
clean slate
Theft
Students are to lock up ALL items in
personal or gym lockers. Items stolen from
unlocked lockers or unsupervised backpacks
cannot be recovered most of the time. Extra
measures have been taken to deter theft and
consequences are heavy for those who choose
to steal.
Your help and communication with your
child regarding all of these reminders is
appreciated!
APS Students Attend Presidential
Inauguration in DC
By Wade DallaGrana, Social Studies
Fifty American Political Systems students left Madison on
January 19 for a four-day trip to Washington DC to attend the
57th Presidential Inauguration. After studying the 2012 presidential
election in APS during first semester, witnessing the inauguration of
President Obama on Monday, January 21 was a perfect way to bring
the course to its conclusion. The theme for the 57th Presidential
Inauguration, which also commemorated the 150th anniversary of
the Emancipation Proclamation,
was “Faith in America’s Future.”
While in Washington DC,
students visited the Holocaust
Museum, the Newseum and
many of the Smithsonian
Museums located on the
National Mall. The students
were also able to tour the U.S. Capitol and visit Arlington National
Cemetery. The highlight of the trip, however, was observing the
swearing-in ceremony, listening to the inaugural address and watching
the inaugural parade.
American Political Systems is a junior/senior elective social studies
course offered only during election years. It will be taught again in
Fall 2014.
Art Department News
By Mr. Mark Thering, Art Department Chair
The Art Department has started the Semester 2 with students in
Basic Painting/Mixed Media, Commercial Art & Design, Advanced
Photography, Advanced Drawing and Yearbook Design. The hallway
showcases are filled with artwork from Semester 1 students in Basic
Drawing, Photography and Jewelry Sculpture. There will be much
more, as we are preparing for the EHS Fine Arts Festival. Also ahead
is the Badger Art Competition, which we are hosting March 17–
April 14 at Edgewood College’s new “The Stream” Art Center. And,
there is the Congressional Art Show in May of this year.
As the year continues, there may be other art shows announced.
Also, watch for the production of Guys and Dolls, March 7-10 and
15-16, 2013. This play is sponsored by
ScenoGraphics, a national set design company.
We hope our set design will win us another set
award as it did for last year’s set design of West
Side Story! We earned 3rd Place (our 19th award
since our contest quest began in 1986).
A few last news items…
Edgewood students are planning to paint two “Barn Quilts” this
spring, one by the Commercial Art & Design class and a second one
by the newly formed “Underground Society of Art,” a small group of
students that meets after school on Fridays, headed by senior Mikki
Heckman.
A second set of stained glass windows will be installed on the first
floor hallway by the President’s Office and Room 105. Danielle
Burrows and other students have been finishing this project that was
earlier started by Melissa Mutch, and Lauren Nebel, class of 2011.
Please think of the Edgewood’s Art Department when you are
throwing away any art or photography materials or if you are looking
for a worthy cause in need!
ENJOY THE ARTS!
Catholic Schools Week
By Amy Richardson,
Campus Ministry
Once again Edgewood
celebrated Catholic Schools
Week: January 28–February
1, 2013. This year’s theme
was “Catholic Schools Raise
the Standards.” Catholic
Schools Week is a time to
celebrate our Catholic
identity. We joined in celebration with Catholic schools across the
country for a week of unique and inviting activities, prayers, and
events.
We kicked-off our Catholic Schools Week on Monday with
faculty and staff greeting students in the morning. Tuesday was our
all-school liturgy day. We were excited that St. Ambrose Academy
students joined us for Mass. Wednesday was St. Dominic Day, and
we celebrated our Dominican heritage. Students were invited to dress
in black or white, traditional Dominican colors.
Throughout the week we focused on service by holding a
fundraiser for Visitation Grade School, a fellow Dominican school in
an impoverished neighborhood in Chicago. Our goal of collecting
$1 from every Edgewood student, faculty, and staff will help support
Visitation’s scholarship program. Finally, we ended the week on
Friday with a special assembly featuring musician Aaron Thompson.
Hope everyone had a Happy Catholic Schools Week!
Have Fun, Simple as Black & White!
By Barb Kolb, Director of Fundraising Special Events
Mark your calendar! On Friday, April 26, 2013
Edgewood High School will again open the
Commons and Wilke Gym for the 27th
Annual Auction and Social with the
theme “Ebony & Ivory: Dueling Bids
& Dueling Pianos.”
The auction is a great way to meet new
families and visit with old friends while
supporting a worthy cause. All of the
proceeds from the auction directly benefit EHS
families by providing the necessary financial
support for the need-based financial aid program.
This year’s event will bring back a strolling dinner with open bar,
and will feature new twists on the silent auction, including mysterious
“black boxes” and some items up for “blind best offers.” In addition
to other games, raffles and live auction, the event will include an
exciting evening of comedic and musical entertainment from
Madison’s own Piano Fondue! The “dueling pianos” will take center
stage in the Wilke Gym and we are offering reserved premium seating
for the first “ring” of tables surrounding the stage. These special tables
are limited and sell for $1,000 each. All other reserved seats sell for
$50 each. All tables/seats are on a first come, first served basis. Look
for your invitation in the weeks to come!
Don’t forget to purchase your raffle ticket for the Cash or Credit
Raffle with a chance to win $5,000 cash or a $7,500 EHS tuition
credit. These tickets are on sale now for $50 each. Please visit
edgewoodhs.org for raffle sales and up-to-date information or email
Barb Kolb at kolbbar@edgewood.k12.wi.us for donation and
sponsorship information.

A Classic Returns!
This March, Edgewood drama proudly
presents the timeless classic Guys and Dolls!,
with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser and
book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows. Set in
Damon Runyon's mythical New York City,
this oddball romantic comedy—
considered by many to be the
perfect musical comedy—soars
with the spirit of Broadway
as it introduces us to a
cast of vivid
characters who
have become
March 7-10
March 15 & 16
legends in the canon: Sarah Brown, the
upright but uptight “mission doll,” out to
reform the evildoers of Time Square; Sky
Masterson, the slick, high-rolling gambler
who woos her on a bet and ends up falling in
love; Adelaide, the chronically ill nightclub
performer whose condition is brought on by
the fact she's been engaged to the same
man for 14 years; and Nathan Detroit,
her devoted fiance, desperate as always
to find a spot for his infamous
floating craps game. This
production features two casts
in the roles of Sky
Masterson, Sarah Brown, Nathan Detroit and
Adelaide. Jack Buettner, Mary Kate Van
Wagner, Jake Prine and Sophia Janus will
perform March 7, 9 & 15. Niall Martin,
Alicia Wilson, Dylan Todd and Natalie Guse
will perform March 8, 10 & 16. Each night
they are joined onstage by 45 of Edgewood's
finest actors, singers and dancers, and
supported backstage by an additional 25
students as musicians, technicians, designers
and crew members.
Join us for an evening of musical theatre
magic, and thank you for supporting
Ten Guidelines for
Sports Parents
The Athletic Directors and Principals of all the schools of the
Badger Conference strongly advocate the involvement of our
students in athletic and all co-curricular activities. We must
caution that the rich potential of such involvement can be
easily short-circuited by the wrong parental approach. The
schools of the Badger Conference in PARTNERSHIP with the
parents of our students can provide an incredibly positive
learning experience if we all work together. The guidelines
below are adopted from sports psychologist, Jim Simpson.
• Make sure the students know that win or lose, scared or
heroic, you love him/her, appreciate their effort, and are
not disappointed in them.
• Teach your student to enjoy the thrill of competition. Don’t
say winning does not count, because it does.
• Try to be completely honest about the student’s athletic
ability, competitive attitude, and sportsmanship.
• Don’t compare the skill, ability, and attitude of your child to
that of other members of the team.
• Be helpful, but do not coach on the way to or from contests.
• Don’t compete with the coach, it can only confuse the
student.
• Try not to relive your athletic life through your child in
ways that create pressure.
• Get to know your child’s coach and his/her philosophies,
knowledge, attitudes towards the sport and coaching.
• Remember that students tend to exaggerate when praised
and when criticized. Temper your reactions when they bring
home tales of woes or heroics.
• Make a point of understanding courage and the fact that it
is relative. A student must know that courage is not an
absence of fear, rather, doing something in spite of fear.
CHOOSE EDGEWOOD CAMPUS SCHOOL
FOR YOUR MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENT
The mission of the Edgewood Campus School middle school is to guide each student by promoting
spiritual, intellectual, emotional, physical and social growth. The students have completed their journeys
through childhood and are at the exciting time of life called adolescence. It is important that strong parent
and teacher relationships support them. The faculty and staff at Edgewood Campus School provide
mentoring and guidance for these travelers on the road to high school.
In middle school, the students move from the environment of a self-contained classroom to having
two teachers who team for core classes. Lockers, homerooms, changing classes, and having classes in
different buildings are just some of the new challenges. Teachers work hard to hone organizational
skills and self-reliance and responsibility.
Middle school students benefit from a team of teachers who personally know all the students and their
families. The vision of the school emphasizes the development of the whole child and recognizes each
student’s individual gifts and talents. Students learn to act with appropriate independence by accepting
responsibility and accountability for themselves, their learning, and their actions.
• Class size of 20 to 25 students
• Mix of traditional and innovative teaching
methods; differentiated instruction used
throughout core subjects. Teachers use various
types of assessment to see each student excel.
Technology used across and in conjunction
with curriculum.
• Team teaching model in grade 6,
departmentalized model in grades 7 and 8
• Middle school after-school available until 5:30
• Strong foundation provided in writing using
the Six Traits of Writing and the Five
Paragraph Essay Format in language arts,
social studies and science. Students use
technology for writing revisions and
submissions.
• Rigorous middle school math curriculum
providing strong foundation for high school
math; McDougal Littell series utilized in
grades 6–12; math acceleration for those
prepared for advancement; several different
math levels available including integration
into high school math classes.
EDGEWOOD ADVANTAGES
• Science curriculum uses SEPUP, an NSFfunded
STEM (Science, Technology,
Engineering, Math) science approach that
aligns with the Next Generation Science
Standards. 6th grade focus on earth science,
erosion, plate tectonics, weather/seasons, and
an introduction to astronomy. 7th graders
study life science topics consisting of
experimental design, anatomy and physiology,
cell biology and disease, and genetics. 8th
grade studies physical science including
chemistry, water usage, energy, and force and
motion.
• Students and families access online
assignment, grading and communication
program
• Special subjects include band, art, music,
computers, physical education, library,
guidance and Spanish
• No-cut athletic teams for both boys and girls;
