INFORMATION FOR MEMBERS OF THE EDGEWOOD HIGH SCHOOL COMMUNITY
Principal Perceptions
By Bob Growney, Principal
In the spirit of the Lenten season I thought it was appropriate to
share this bishops’ statement which was approved by the National
Conference of Catholic Bishops a few years ago:
Called to Justice in Everyday Life
Catholicism does not call us to abandon the world but to help
shape it. This does not mean leaving worldly tasks and responsibilities
but transforming them….The lay vocation for justice in the world
cannot be carried forward alone but only as members of a community
called to be the “leaven” of the Gospel.
Our families are the starting point and the center of a vocation for
justice….We demonstrate our commitment to the Gospel by how we
spend our time and money, and whether our family life includes an
ethic of charity, service, and action for justice.
Workers are called to pursue justice. In the Catholic tradition,
work is not a burden, not just how we make a living. Work is a way of
supporting our family, realizing our dignity, promoting the common
good, and participating in God’s creation.
Owners, managers, and investors face important opportunities
to seek justice and pursue peace. Ethical responsibility is not just
avoiding evil, but doing right, especially for the weak and vulnerable.
As consumers, believers can promote social justice or injustice.
As citizens in the world’s leading democracy, Catholics in the
United States have special responsibilities to protect human life and
dignity, to stand with those who are poor and vulnerable.
I just want to send a quick note of thanks for all of your volunteer
efforts in support of Edgewood High School. You’ve been a
tremendous resource and a big reason for our success and our
students’ success. I’m constantly impressed by your talent, dedication,
and ability to support all who are contributing members of the
Edgewood High School community.
Herb Kohl Student Excellence Award
Matthew Molina and Matthew Semrau have been selected by the
Herb Kohl Education Foundation as statewide winners of the 2013
Herb Kohl Student Excellence Award. This recognition awards both
students $1,000 because they have shown a high level of motivation
to achieve, and strong promise for succeeding in college and beyond.
Congratulations to both Matts!
Summer Registration Going Electronic
Summer Registration for the 2013-14 school year, scheduled for
July 18 and 23, will take on a new look with more information being
gathered electronically and with less paper. It is our hope that this
new process will increase efficiency and accuracy for parents, students,
and staff of EHS. In order for all families to participate in registering
electronically, parents MUST HAVE a PowerSchool Parent Account
set up. Please contact John Hylkema at hylkjoh@edgewood.k12.wi.us
if you need an account set up for you. More specific information
about the revised registration process, and how it will affect you, will
arrive in June.
Skip Day: Why or Why Not?
By Shannon McDonough, Assistant Principal
Senior skip day is an unwritten tradition in many high schools.
Although the idea of the senior class uniting to celebrate their
“senior” standing is something EHS supports; however a senior skip
day is a large safety issue because the students are unsupervised during
normal school hours. A day like this also compromises the main
reason all our families are sending their students to Edgewood, to
receive an education. The only way to accomplish this is through
instructional time. A skip day directly compromises valuable time
where the students gain important material.
On the other hand, one of Edgewood’s many goals is to have the
students learn and be safe, but to also have fun and obtain many great
experiences both in and out of the classroom. Edgewood’s senior trip
evolved through the cooperation of the student body and
administration, agreeing to avoid an unsanctioned skip day. As a
reward for the students abstaining from a skip day, the EHS tradition
has been a senior trip organized and built into the graduation
activities.
Currently, the senior trip is planned to go to Six Flags Great
America in Gurnee, Illinois. This supervised trip is often the last time
the entire class is together. Many wonderful memories are collected.
Seniors take coach buses to the theme park. Bagels, donuts, juice and
other treats are provided for breakfast. They are provided a huge
lunch of their choice inside the park and receive healthy, nutritious
snacks/munchies on the way home. The day is always a special time
whether you are a coaster-rider or you like to “people watch” and
enjoy the many shows.
Again, the school’s goal is to keep the students safe and supervised.
A senior skip day could and would jeopardize the tradition of a senior
trip. Absences occurring on a “skip day” are considered unexcused
unless a doctor note is provided. Parents can help and support by not
allowing their students to miss school for an impromptu skip day.
Through the cooperation, communication and honesty between all
members of the EHS community, we can provide our senior class
with the recognition and unity they deserve for their efforts and
achievements throughout their years at Edgewood.
Continuing one’s education after high school means making the
most of all four years. This workshop is designed to inform parents of
freshmen and sophomores about the various pathways to take during
each year of high school. Whether developing solid study skills during
freshman year, becoming involved in co-curriculars during
sophomore year or walking through the college exploration process
junior year, each step along the pathway is important. Please join us
for an overview of how to have a successful and ENJOYABLE high
school experience that will open doors to the future.
Have You Scheduled Your
Junior Parent and Counselor Meeting?
Remember, it’s time to schedule your Junior Parent Counselor
meeting for March or April! This 45-minute meeting, held during
one of your student’s free mods, is to discuss his or her plans for life
after high school, college exploration resources, and planning for the
college application process. Please contact your student’s counselor
Would You Like to be a
College Family Mentor?
By Michelle Borleske, Student Services Counselor
Student Services and the Edgewood Parent Community are
joining efforts to help families gain confidence and reassurance as
they travel through the college exploration, application and selection
process. The school counselors in Student Services will provide, as
always, their professional and experienced guidance, but you may
have advice and perspective to share as well. Has your older student
joined the military or ROTC, and you have experience to share?
Perhaps you planned out the perfect East Coast college visit route or
learned a few things after helping your student with artistic auditions
or portfolios? Did your student or your family struggle with choosing
between different types of college and you can encourage another
family to do the same?
If you’re interested in offering a bit of your time and advice to
other families, please contact either Michelle Borleske in Student
Services at borlmic@edgewood.k12.wi.us or 257.1023, x153, or Jenny
Learning, Earning, and Returning
By Diane Ballweg, Aviation Teacher
While Edgewood families were scurrying around at Parent-Teacher
Conferences, I was scurrying around Grand Ol’ Opryland in Nashville at
the Women in Aviation International Conference collecting news,
updates, career brochures and “stuff” for the Aviation Class. Over 2,000
people were in attendance from every conceivable corner of the aviation
industry: engineers, mechanics, designers, scientists, environmentalists,
pilots, weather briefers, dispatchers, controllers, tech specialists, flight
attendants, FAA and DOT officials, every branch of the military,
schedulers, security officials, communication experts, ticket sellers,
corporate pilots, med-flight helicopter crews, glider and seaplane
enthusiasts...and the list continues. They came from all around the globe.
Most outstanding to me: a group of about 20 Nigerian women dressed in
colorful, native costume and eager to learn. It’s a growing, dynamic,
worldwide marketplace. We all love the thrill of flight. There are
challenges and improvements for the next generation to face.
The aviation industry employees 1.4 million people in the United
States. Aircraft manufacturing accounts for $2.57 billion in sales
annually. Over $60,000 has already been awarded in scholarships at this
conference, and the weekend isn’t finished yet. One of the guest speakers
offered a simple message that’s easy to remember, and it’s a good guide for
life: “learn – earn – return.”
To my students, I hope you remember these three words. LEARN:
Listen and participate in class. Be accountable. Do your homework.
Jump at opportunities and learn as much as you can to provide a strong
foundation. EARN: You will get a job, and you’ll probably change jobs
several times. Hopefully your good education will provide the financial
support to live the life you desire. RETURN: Give back. Pay it forward.
Mentor others. If you do these three things, you will be a flying success!
Piano Students in Recital on April 17
Choirs/Handbells on April 29
The vocal and handbell choirs will present a concert in the Krantz
Center Gymnasium on Monday, April 29 at 7:30 p.m. The concert is
the culmination of all the hard work the students have done during
the 2012-2013 school year!
The Edgewood Chorus will feature the poetry of Carl Sandburg
and George Harrison (The Beatles), and the music of contemporary
composers Stephen Hatfield and Don Besig.
Concert Choir/SATB will present music ranging from Franz
Schubert to McFadden, Whitehead & Carstarphen. Concert
Choir/SSA presents a contemporary setting of a Buddhist mantra
along with other delightful selections. The two choirs will combine to
celebrate the 25th anniversary of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of
the Opera winning the Tony Award for Best Musical.
The choirs are under the direction of Dennis McKinley and are
accompanied by Susan DeGroot Boucher, Hikari Maekawa and
Carrie Backman ’99.
Varsity Handbells and Junior Varsity Handbells are ready to please
and impress! Each group is at maximum enrollment meaning that
both choirs can play five-octave handbell literature. Director Ann
Nelson challenges the choirs by offering each choir a broad variety of
handbell literature extending from “serious” handbell music to “pop”
styles. At this concert everyone will learn about the “singing bell.”
Band and Orchestra Spring Concert
May 1 at 7:30 pm in the Krantz Center
The Earth is represented by its diversity and experiences of good
and hard times. The repertoire for this concert is focused on this
theme and activities that have allowed the students to experience the
music in depth to be able to perform to their maximum potential.
The band repertoire is as follows:
• Shine - Interaction with composer Michael Markowski. Shine is an
exploration of brighter instrumental colors within a world of softer,
more muted textures.
• Blue and Green Music - Interaction with composer Sam Hazo. Based
on a painting by Georgia O’Keefe. Students painted their own
artwork and wrote melodies to represent their creations.
• Volver a la Montana - Interaction with composer Shelley Hanson.
The work is based on several folk tunes of the Quechua (“Inca”)
people of Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia.
• An American Elegy - Interaction with composer Frank Ticheli and
conductor Allan McMurray from the University of Colorado. The
piece is composed in memory of those who lost their lives at
Columbine High School on April 20, 1999 and to honor the
survivors in a spirit of hope.
• Hosts of Freedom - Classic march representing American freedom
The orchestra repertoire is as follows:
• Point Lookout - Interaction with composer Brian Balmages. Based
on traditional Civil War folksongs.
• Irish Tune from County Derry by Percy Grainger
• Russian Gypsy Song - Uses various techniques to imitate the sounds
of the often-used gypsy instruments and songs.
• Palladio
• Music from Wicked
• Music of ABBA
The Percussion Ensemble will perform the classic Bela Fleck tune
Sinister Minister and a Saxophone Quartet, Clarinet Ensemble, and a
Brass Quintet.

Dominican Mission at a Glance:
Walking With the Two Feet of Charity and Justice
By Jim Baltus, Religious Studies Faculty
On the days of March 5-8, Edgewood High School was fortunate
enough to receive Toni Harris, OP, former Prioress of the congregation of
the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa. Sister Toni taught art at EHS, 1970-
1974, a passion for which manifested itself in her eventual ministry of
fostering justice and peace. Currently, Sister Toni lives in Rome where she
is the International Promoter for Justice and Peace for Dominican Sisters
International, an organization working to create solidarity and support
for nearly 25,000 Dominican Sisters who serve the poor, war refugees,
immigrants, and women and children in over 110 countries.
During a trip to the United States in March, Sister Toni accepted an
invitation from Edgewood High School to share her experiences and
message with students, faculty, and staff. Sister Toni visited half of the
student body in 12 classes within the departments of Religious
Studies/Campus Ministry, Foreign Language, English and Social Studies
as well as with all the freshmen during a large group session. Sister Toni
also addressed the entire student body at the March 7 Lenten Prayer
Service. During all of her sessions, she shared a presentation entitled
“Another World Is Possible.” She highlighted the work of Dominican
Sisters throughout the world who are responding to poverty, violence and
suffering resulting from what Sister Toni called the megatrends of
migration, urbanization and mediatization, all realities in our world that
continue to deepen the gulf between the rich and poor. As a Gospel
people, we are challenged to help those in need, and more importantly, to
examine the systems that create “the need” in the first place. Sister Toni
emphasized that though “there is an essential relationship between charity
and justice, they are not the same. Working for justice involves changing
systems, structures, institutions and public policies that are the root
causes of social injustices. The Gospel demands that followers of Jesus
walk with both these ‘feet:’ the two feet of charity and justice.”
Sister Toni shared examples of Dominican Sisters who often risk their
lives in service. The Sisters work for justice in Africa, Asia, Australia,
Europe, as well as North and Latin America. Sister Toni encouraged the
student body to imagine the possibility of a world that worked for the
rights and dignity of every person. She did not wish to make us feel guilty
for being among the privileged of the world, but rather she came as a
witness to injustice and to open our eyes so that we might respond with
compassion and action, in whatever form that takes in our daily lives and
situations. As Sister Toni said to us in her final words, “Everyone, in every
form of life and work, has the opportunity—and responsibility—to help
make the world more just and peaceful.”
EBONY & IVORY: DUELING BIDS & DUELING PIANOS
Invitations have been mailed! Make your reservation for our largest fundraising event of the year, taking place on Friday, April 26, 2013.
Don’t miss out on an evening of fun and entertainment all while supporting a worthy cause. All proceeds from the auction directly
benefit EHS families by providing the necessary financial support for the need-based financial aid program.
This year’s event will bring back a strolling dinner with open bar, will feature new twists on the silent auction and, in addition to other
games, raffles and live auction, will offer an exciting evening of comedic and musical entertainment from Madison’s own PianoFondue! The
“dueling pianos” will take center stage in the Wilke Gym and we are offering reserved premium seating for the first “ring” of tables
surrounding the stage. This limited number of special tables sell for $1,000 each. All other reserved seats sell for $50 each. All tables/seats are
on a first come, first served basis.
Don’t forget to purchase your raffle ticket for the Cash or Credit Raffle with a chance to win a $7,500 EHS tuition credit or $5,000 cash.
Tickets are $50 each. Additional one’s may be purchased from the Advancement Office or online. Visit edgewoodhs.org for up-to-date
information on the 27th Annual EHS Auction & Social as well as a link to registration and raffle sales.
