EDGEWOOD HIGH SCHOOL
SPONSORSHIP
Edgewood High School is sponsored by the Congregation of
Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa. Founded in 1847 by the Venerable
Father Samuel Mazzuchelli, OP, the Congregation sponsors eleven
institutions. Through sponsorship, the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa
carry out their mission to preach and teach.
MISSION
Edgewood, a Catholic high school, educates the whole student for a
life of learning, service and personal responsibility through a rigorous
academic curriculum that embraces the Sinsinawa Dominican values of
Truth, Compassion, Justice, Partnership and Community.
VALUES
The five Gospel values Edgewood High School promotes in its mission,
as a school sponsored by the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa, form the
foundation upon which an Edgewood High School education is built:
TRUTH
gained through study, reflection, and sharing of knowledge
COMPASSION
revealed through mercy and empathy with another’s suffering
JUSTICE
practiced in the recognition of rights and responsibilities for all
PARTNERSHIP
forged in mutual respect and love among mature persons
COMMUNITY
based on the acceptance of the interdependence of all creation
VENERABLE FR. SAMUEL MAZZUCHELLI, OP
Samuel Mazzuchelli was born on November 4, 1806 in Milan, Italy, the
son of a prosperous textile merchant. At age 17 he joined the Dominicans,
the “Order of Preachers.” After a year he was identified as a prospect for
training to go to North America and be a missionary. Not yet a priest,
Samuel arrived in Ohio in 1828 at the age of 22 and served under
Cincinnati’s first bishop, Edward Fenwick. After ordination two years later,
Fr. Samuel was assigned to a territory that covered all of Wisconsin and
concentrated his early efforts among the Native Americans in the Green
Bay area, but gradually spread his influence as far as Galena, Illinois,
and Dubuque, Iowa. Wherever he went, Fr. Samuel designed and built
churches, some of which still stand today. He founded over 40 parishes
and became known among the poor farming and mining settlers as well
as the wealthy landowners and powerful politicians. A lover of the arts
and sciences, he promoted their study as well as fostering the Catholic
faith. In September, 1844, he purchased the 800 acres of Sinsinawa
Mound in southwestern Wisconsin, seven miles east of the Mississippi
River and nine miles west of Galena, Illinois. There he established a college
for men and a house for a new province of Dominican brothers and priests.
In 1847 he established the Dominican Sisters there as well. Fr. Samuel
continued his ministry throughout the region until his death in 1864.
Father Samuel’s dream of establishing a new province of Dominican Friars
failed but the Congregation of Sisters he established thrived. The original
Stone Building, used for the men’s college and priory, became St. Clara
Convent and Academy when the Sisters moved the school back to
Sinsinawa from Benton in 1867. In 1993, Pope John Paul II declared
Father Mazzuchelli “Venerable,” the first step in the process of elevation
to sainthood. For more information on Fr. Samuel Mazzuchelli and the
PATRICK S. SWEENEY ’73
Mazzuchelli Award for Service to Christian Education
The Sweeney family has a long and extensive connection to
Edgewood High School, going back three generations to the
1930s. As Patrick Sweeney ’73 likes to say, “My dad and his
brothers started the connection and after they graduated,
continued to help Coach Wilke and Sr. Kathleen and by the time
my generation came along we didn’t know any other way. It’s just
‘what we do.’ We get a tremendous amount of enjoyment,
community and a strong sense of commitment from our
connection to Edgewood. It has the atmosphere of a family, and
who thinks of leaving family?”
Patrick, who is an attorney, realized that it was “his time”
to serve Edgewood, and so when his older brother, Tim ’66,
approached him about being a member of the Business &
Finance Committee, he agreed and served on it for a year before
joining the Board of Trustees in 2005 where he was on the
Presidential Search Interview Committee representing donors
and alumni and eventually served as Board chair from 2009 to
2011. In addition, he was a founding member of the E Club that
supports the Crusader atheletic program, and he has offered his
services as legal counsel.
Patrick’s service gave him a behind-the-scenes view of the
school’s fiscal position and operations, and together with other
Board members and the administration he helped forge a
mission-based business model that helped stabilized the school’s
financial status and began a planning process for its long-term
viability. Under his recent chairmanship the school has
completely revamped the physical plant: the oldest classrooms
are renovated, the Commons is remodeled and technology and
security upgrades exist throughout the building. Edgewood
has new athletic facility arrangements, including the Otto
Breitenbach Stadium, which the school shares with Middleton,
for football. In addition, arrangements are being developed for
access to a spectacular ice rink for hockey. He also helped in the
negotiations to untangle the complex structure of campus
governance so that all three Edgewood schools now operate as
distinct corporate entities.
Formerly with Sweeney & Sweeney, S.C., Patrick now works
at Sweeney Legal Group, S.C. In his professional career, Patrick
continues to deal with people he originally met through
Edgewood. He says, “To this day I have clients with whom I
graduated, or who have graduated from EHS since I was there.
Often, you sit down at a table, and someone mentions their
Edgewood connection, and suddenly the whole tenor of the
meeting changes. There’s an instant additional sense of comfort
and ease that is added by our shared heritage.”
He has also volunteered his time with the Fitchburg
Wisconsin Cultural Heritage Committee and the St. Patrick’s
Day Parade.
What Patrick says he has learned most from his time in
service is that as you proceed through life, “You should try to
leave the world a different and better place for your having been
here. Make every room you go into a better place. Work one-onone,
over and over.” That he says, is the source of feeling
fulfilled. He advises others, “Get involved! Your participation is
important and what you learn is enlightening, humbling and
rewarding. The experience is tremendous.”
JOHN F. MCCLURE
Alumni Appreciation Award
When John McClure and his wife, Sandy, moved to
Madison from Milwaukee in the 1980s, they searched for a
school for their three children. After they decided on EHS
for Scot ’86, Kristen ’88 and Tim ’91, they were pleased
with their choice for many reasons, not the least of which
was the community.
“During our kids’ years in school, Edgewood was like
family. Like all parents, we were so involved. It was like a
breath of fresh air after moving from Milwaukee and finding
so many friendly faces—both staff and other parents. I guess
that is why I have stayed involved for 20-plus years after my
youngest graduated. A special place to say the least.” While
this sentiment is often voiced by others, John has continued
to stay involved as an advisor, a consultant and a committed
volunteer, continuing to be a part of the EHS community
he found so welcoming.
John most recently has been serving as a member of the
EHS Endowment Committee, a position he has held since
1990. He was also a member of the President’s Advisory
Board, the precursor to the Board of Trustees, serving as
Chair in the late 1980s. In addition to his volunteer work at
Edgewood, John has served on the Board of Visitors for the
Waisman Center, as a board member for the Boy Scouts,
was a member of the Madison Civic Center Foundation
Board, and currently serves as the chair of the Finance
Council at St. Maria Goretti Parish.
John is retired from Madison Investment Advisors, where
he served as the Managing Director from 1987 to 2011. He
was previously a Senior Vice President at First Wisconsin.
He holds a B.A. in Economics from the University of Notre
Dame and an M.B.A. from the Northwestern University.
John’s quiet, behind-the-scenes commitment to
Edgewood is a perfect example of the Dominican values that
are so important and evident at the school, an illustration of
the dedication that makes this community feel like family.
JOANNE M. DISCH ’64
Mazzuchelli Award for Service to Humanity
The Mazzuchelli Award was created with someone like
Joanne Disch ’64 in mind, someone who embodies the tenets
of Edgewood High School of the Sacred Heart and its Mission
Statement, “Edgewood, a Catholic high school, educates the
whole student for a life of learning, service and personal
responsibility through a rigorous academic curriculum that
embraces the Sinsinawa Dominican values of Truth,
Compassion, Justice, Partnership and Community.”
One of Joanne’s favorite quotes is “To move freely, you must
be deeply rooted.” She continues, “I feel that I have been able
to achieve what I’ve been able to achieve because of the solid
foundation in education, values and a sense of responsibility
modeled and re-informed by the Sinsinawa Dominicans, EHS
and my parents. I comment frequently on this when asked,
‘What has helped you?’”
This solid foundation has been the launching point for
Joanne’s long and successful career. She is currently a clinical
professor at the University of Minnesota School of Nursing,
where she serves as the co-operative unit chair in Population
Health and Systems, Systems, Infomatics and Policy. She lists
over 120 different publications, which include books, chapters,
articles, abstracts and editorials she has written or co-authored
since 1978. Among the many professional organizations she lists,
she is most proud of the following: she is a member of the
Aurora Health Care Board of Directors, where she serves or has
served on the Governance Committee, Finance Committee,
Capital Committee, IT Task Force and Pension Plan Task Force;
she is a Board member of the National Center for Healthcare
Leadership; she is on the Board of Visitors for the University of
Wisconsin School of Nursing; a member of the National Board
of Directors for AARP, and served as the Board chair, 2006-
2008; is the current president of the American Academy of
Nursing, of which she has been a member since 1991; and she
served as the president on the National Board of Directors for
the American Association of Critical Care Nurses, of which she
is currently a member, from 1982-1983.
Honors and recognition have been given to Joanne by many
different organizations and universities, and out of the 24 she has
listed on her resume, she includes as highlights the following:
the Visionary Leader Award, given at the 60th Anniversary
Celebration of the University of Alabama at Birmingham School
of Nursing; Outstanding Alumna, the University of Wisconsin
School of Nursing, as well as Distinguished Alumna, University
of Wisconsin Alumni Association; President’s Award, the
American Academy of Nursing; and Distinguished Alumna,
University of Alabama in Birmingham, School of Nursing. In
addition, she has presented at over 350 different conferences,
forums and meetings since 1981. She has also had many media
appearances, citations and interviews, along with several different
educational modules.
If you read Joanne’s favorite quote a second time, you will see
that she has indeed “moved freely” in her exceptional career and
used her” deeply rooted” foundation from Edgewood to assist
her in her exceptional service to humanity.
GREGORY L. POOLE ’63
EAA Athletic Hall of Fame
Gregory Poole ’63 had a long and storied athletic career while
attending Edgewood High School, and his accomplishments
were numerous. He played both football and baseball and helped
his teams to the highest levels of high school sports. Sports are
not the only memory Greg has of high school; he also fondly
remembers Sister Killeen’s (Kathleen O’Connell) strictness,
Coach Wilke’s discipline, Sister Mildredine’s barbecues and, of
course, his classmates.
In 1962, he was named All-City Quarterback, heading an
Edgewood football team that tallied a 9-0 season record. The
Crusader yearbook that year states that Edgewood’s unbeaten
season began with “a touchdown by the opposing Waupun
offense, a play that started a long process of improvement which
never stopped until these same Crusaders had won all of their
nine games, the best in Coach Earl Wilke’s history. The proud
Edgewood defense allowed less than one touchdown a game,
while the offense scored almost 25 points a game.” As a member
of the All-City team, he was a part of another football win.
In addition to football, Greg played right wing for the
Madison Hawks All-Star team and aided them to a National
Championship. While still at Edgewood he was awarded the
David Sanna Memorial trophy and named All-City shortstop
for Edgewood baseball on a team that finished 18-2 and 2nd
Place at WISSA State.
Greg played baseball at UW-Whitewater while earning his
degree, and won letters in both 1967 and 1968. He continued to
play both football and fastpitch softball throughout the 1970s
and 1980s, winning numerous city and state championships,
and even holds a touch football record winning streak of 38-0.
He played in both National and International competitions, with
a 5th Place finish in the National Touch Football Tournament
and two 3rd Place finishes in the International Softball Congress
World Tournaments. In addition, he achieved a 2nd and a 5th
Place at the Amateur Softball Association of America Nationals.
Greg turned his love for softball into a mentoring role in
addition to being on the field racking up post-college athletic
achievements. He was the softball commissioner of the Madison
School Community Recreation Department from 1971 to 1979,
and organized and directed the Madison Invitational Softball
Tournament from 1972 thru 1978. He attracted national powers
from eight states to the tourney and used the proceeds for major
park improvements, turning a softball diamond into a mini
stadium. The students of Edgewood were able to benefit from
his passion for sports when he served as the assistant varsity
football coach and assistant varsity baseball coach, both from
1988 to 1991. In 1992 and 1993 he served as the assistant
varsity baseball coach at Monona Grove High School and in
1997– 2000 he was the assistant varsity football coach at Verona
High School.
Greg has one daughter, Sarah. He has owned several
restaurants in the Madison area, and in 2010 he retired. Maybe
he will have time for some more athletic achievements!
GEOFFREY C. POOLE ’67
EAA Athletic Hall of Fame
Geoffrey Poole ’67 had a variety of interests while attending
Edgewood High School, He was a server and usher, performed
with Glee Club and was on Homecoming Court his senior year
but his participation on the football and baseball teams was his
most meaningful activity. He followed in the footsteps of his
older brothers Gary ’61 and Greg ’63 and was a part of a family
who, led by his parents Marie and Lyle, enjoyed being involved
in and supporting Edgewood athletics.
Geoff’s senior year was a stellar one for him on the football
field, and he was named the First Team All-City Quarterback by
the Wisconsin State Journal, Capital Times and Madison Shrine
Club. In addition, he was the First Team All-Area Quarterback
for both the Capital Times and Channel 15 and received
honorable mention as All-State Quarterback. The 1966 Crusader
football team, ranked 2nd in the State the first year that public
and private schools were ranked together, holds the school record
for points scored in a season with only 8 games. Geoff’s
contributions included completing 66% of his passes for a total
of 1,549 passing yards with 23 touchdown passes, and 173 yards
rushing with two touchdown runs, all culminating in being
named MVP of the team.
In baseball Geoff was a three-year starter at shortstop and
made All-City and All-Tournament State Team his senior year.
He led all Madison high school baseball players in home runs
and RBIs his senior year. The Crusader baseball team finished
second in the State tournament his sophomore year and won the
State tourney in both his junior and senior years.
“The friends I made at Edgewood have remained my best
friends for my whole life,” states Geoff, many of whom he played
sports with while here.
Over the years since, Geoff has volunteered for many
different athletic teams, acting as a youth hockey coach for 10
years, a youth Little League coach for 10 years and serving in
many functions and as a leader for the Madison Invitational
Softball Tournament from 1972 through 1978.
Geoff also remained active in playing sports. He was the
quarterback in Madison Recreation Department touch football,
from 1967 to 1977, and won league and city championships
from 1972 to 1977. His team won the state tournament in 1976
and finished second in both 1975 and 1977. He played fastpitch
softball for two decades, suiting up as shortstop from 1969
through 1989. That team won league or city championships (or
both) from 1971 to 1980, and Geoff hit the game-winning
home run in the bottom of the 6th inning for the team to take
the city championship with a score of 1-0, in 1971.
Geoff’s loving and supportive family has watched him from
the stands for most of his career. Family members include his
wife, Vicki, and children Cory, Casey and Brittney. In addition,
he has been involved in the restaurant business, and is currently
the owner of Pooley’s.
LYLE A. & MARIE M. POOLE
EAA Athletic Hall of Fame
Lyle and Marie Poole were very involved with Edgewood
athletics during the ten years that their three children were
students. Both of the Pooles felt very strongly that athletics
were important to the students at the high school, and they
wanted to make sure they did everything they could to
ensure the success of the program. This devotion to sports
was passed on to their three children, Gary ’61, Greg ’63
and Geoff ’67.
Along with owning several businesses in the Madison
area, including Poole’s Cuba Club, Poole’s Northgate and
Northgate Lanes, the Pooles were very involved in
nationwide restaurateur organizations. They were members
of the National Restaurant Association, directed the
Madison Chamber of Commerce and the Wisconsin
Restaurant Association and belonged to the Elks Club, the
Mendota Club and the Westside Businessmen’s Club (now
the West Side Club). They received the Roy Award, which
honored the Restaurateur of the Year, in 1972, the first year
this award was given. They were also honored with the
Society of Hosts Award, given by Florida State University
and the Florida Restaurant Association. Poole’s Cuba Club
was voted one of “100 Best Family-Owned Restaurants in
the United States.”
Even with these thriving businesses, Lyle and Marie
found time to be involved in their children’s sports activities.
They were members of the Edgewood Athletic Association,
a group that provides volunteer and financial support for the
athletic programs at the school. No job was too big or too
small for the Pooles—whether it was raising funds for the
different school sports, washing baseball uniforms between
tournament games or feeding multiple dinners to multiple
players at the Cuba Club, they were willing to pitch in to
help. In addition, they were involved with other sportsrelated
organizations in the Madison area, sponsoring
numerous amateur teams for all ages in many different ways.
Their biggest priority though was sitting in the bleachers,
watching football or baseball, and cheering on their favorite
athletes, their sons.
CALLIE J. ZWETTLER MEILLER ’01
EAA Athletic Hall of Fame
Growing up in the Zwettler family, as you might expect,
sports were talked about, played and taught each and every day.
Callie Zwettler Meiller ’01, as the oldest child of Bernie and
Chris, led the way for her siblings Eliza ’04, Alex ’07 and Jack
’12 onto the fields and courts, and eventually made her way to
the schools and sidelines as a coach on both the volleyball and
basketball courts. Her passion and love of sports, which began
early in life, was fostered while a student at Edgewood High
School, allowing her to develop her abilities and leading her to
much success on the college level.
Callie received many different awards and recognition while a
student and volleyball, basketball and softball player at EHS. She
was named to the Madison All-City Volleyball Team and was 1st
Team All-Conference during the 1999-2000 season. She was also
honored as the Player of the Year and Hitter of the Year in the
City of Madison, as well as 3rd Team All-State at the end of the
volleyball season. In 2001 she was named to 1st Team All-
Conference in both Basketball and Softball, and was awarded the
WSAW award and the James D. Farley ’44 Memorial Scholarship
for graduating EHS senior student-athletes. In addition, she
helped to foster the love of sports in others when she served as a
Summer at the Edge sports camp counselor from 2000 to 2004,
and again from 2008 to 2010.
At the University of Minnesota Duluth, Callie was able to
play volleyball while earning a Bachelor of Applied Science in
early childhood studies. Her list of accomplishments and awards
for the UMD Volleyball Team were many. She was named to the
1st Team All-Conference Northern Sun Intercollegiate
Conference from 2001 to 2003; 2nd Team All-American
Volleyball Player; 1st Team All-North Central Region Team and
Player of the Year in the NSIC in 2003. In 2004 she was named
1st Team All-Conference NCC (the school changed conferences),
1st Team All-American Volleyball Player, AVCA All-North
Central Region Team, Daktronics All- Region 1st Team Outside
Hitter, Player of the Year in NCC, Elite 8 All-Tournament Team,
with a Final Four Appearance, Academic All-District Team and
Academic All-NCC Team.
Callie began teaching grades K-8 after graduating, first as a
substitute at a variety of schools, then as a teacher’s aide, and has
since taught a 2nd/3rd split class, 5th grade and currently teaches
kindergarten at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Elementary in Oshkosh.
In 2011 she received her MS in educational leadership from the
University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, along with other teaching
certifications and licenses. She continues to stay involved in
sports, and has been coaching since graduating in 2005—as an
assistant at UW-Oshkosh, head coach at both New London and
Oshkosh North, and currently as the varsity assistant at Lourdes
High School. She also was an assistant coach for the Freshman
Girls Basketball team at Oshkosh West. Callie and her husband
James also keep busy running after Tyson, three, and Robin,
seven months, and attending Edgewood sporting events with
family members whenever possible.
As Callie says, “Edgewood has always been a home away from
home and an instant family that always opens its doors with the
greatest amount of love, warmth and hospitality. It will always
hold a very special place in my heart.”
TIMOTHY P. DOMACK ’95
Fine Arts Hall of Fame
Timothy Domack ’95 has been performing on stage and
working in theatre since about the age of eight when he helped
his mom, Ruth (“Chief”), work on technical crews for the
Edgefest Follies. This early introduction to theatre fed his passion
for the arts, and he began performing on stage in about seventh
grade with the Children’s Theatre of Madison. At Edgewood
High School, he was involved in drama and Young Life and he
continued his acting and performing on stage.
Tim received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre from the
University of Central Florida. While a student, he performed in
multiple shows, and worked continuously in the scene shop
building the sets and props for every show. In his junior year he
was an intern at the GoodSpeed Opera House in the prop shop
and senior year he was a casting intern with the same company.
After college, Tim began building television scenery, mainly
for news rooms around the country, and was based in North
Carolina. But his desire to move to New York City to pursue his
dream of working in technical theatre in the hub of the
profession led him to an internship with the Charlotte Wilcox
Company, where he worked on Jesus Christ Superstar, The Full
Monty and Ragtime. While interning, he learned the business side
of professional theater, and eventually took a job at The Juilliard
School as a prop artisan. For seven years he remained at Juilliard,
and eventually was promoted to assistant prop shop supervisor.
During the summers he was able to take summer stock positions
in Colorado, Utah and Portland.
After meeting his wife, Caroline, and having their first baby,
Jacob, now age five, the couple decided to return to North
Carolina to raise their family, and moved to Raleigh, where
Phillip, three and Margaret Louise, six months, were born.
Tim taught technical theatre at Riverside High School in
Durham for over two years, and received the ILT Teacher of the
Year award in 2009. His desire for a shorter commute led him to
his current position at Wake Forest-Rolesville High School,
where he also teaches technical theatre. He continues to build
scenery professionally at William Peace University and NC State,
as well as building props for the Burning Coal Theater Company,
and works steadily as a stagehand, loading concerts in and out of
the PNC Arena and Walnut Creek Amphitheatre.
Tim says, “I owe a lot of my success and drive to Edgewood
High School and Pam Hanson-Stewart. I try to model my
teaching and organization the way Edgewood has taught me.
I continuously speak in high regard of my alma mater and try
to show my appreciation to the staff and teachers for giving me
some of the best years of my life. I have always wanted to teach
theatre on the high school level due to my days at Edgewood and
the theatre program there. Thank you, Edgewood High School!”
CHRISTOPHER C. ’82, KEVIN P. ’84
AND JOHN P. ’88 FARLEY
Fine Arts Hall of Fame
The Farley family home was a comedy-rich environment,
one in which Christopher ’82, Kevin ’84 and John ’88 were able
to nurture and develop their talents. Their comedic skills were
firmly grounded in their family roots, their strong work ethic
and their Midwestern values. All three were born and raised in
the Madison area, and their parents and siblings include mom
Mary Anne, dad Thomas ’53, sister Barbara ’78 and brother
Thomas Jr. ’80. All five of Mary Anne and Thomas’ five children
attended Edgewood High School, and both Kevin and John have
expressed strong feelings and gratitude for their time at EHS.
The life lessons the Farley brothers learned while students at
Edgewood are many and varied. All three boys were involved in a
number of sports during high school. In addition, Chris
participated in Class Council, Kevin in Drama and Class
Council, and John in Forensics and Choir. Both Kevin and John
credit EHS as the place where some of the cornerstones of their
personalities were formed. As Kevin explains, “The difference
of an education at Edgewood is that they feel it’s important to
teach kids to practice Christianity and not just think about it as
a nice concept.”
After graduating from college, Chris with a B.A. from
Marquette University in 1986, Kevin with a B.S. in marketing,
also from MU in 1988 and with a master’s in marketing from
Edgewood College in 1992, and Tom with a degree in business
and marketing from Regis University in 1992, all three of the
Farley brothers eventually followed a career path into the field of
comedic entertainment.
Chris was the first to forge that pathway, beginning at Second
City Theater Group in Chicago where he was put on the Main
Stage in just a few short months, a rare occurrence. He was
quickly chosen as a cast member on the long-running Saturday
Night Live and spent five years making the entire world laugh.
Many of his most famous characters stemmed from his
experiences at EHS, and Kevin tells us that “many of his friends
from Edgewood and the football team” were among his fondest
memories of EHS. Chris went on to star in a number of movies
including Tommy Boy (1995), Black Sheep (1996), Beverly Hills
Ninja (1997) and Almost Heroes (1998) before his death in 1997.
Kevin Farley has truly established himself as a comedic
presence, both on the big screen and on television, in the fields
of acting, writing, directing and producing. Kevin also began his
entertainment career in Chicago where he studied at the famed
Second City. He then relocated to Los Angeles and also had roles
in the films Tommy Boy (1995) and Black Sheep (1996). He
garnered rave reviews starring as Doug Linus on the MTV
sitcom 2gether (2000-2001) and went on to appear in numerous
TV series programs such as That ’70s Show, Third Rock from the
Sun, Joey, Just Shoot Me, Curb Your Enthusiasm and many more.
Not surprisingly, when Kevin began to focus on feature films,
the emphasis was exclusively on comedy. He appeared in the
Adam Sandler animated comedy Eight Crazy Nights (2002),
The Waterboy (1998), Dirty Work (1998), and the Cedric the
Entertainer laugh-fest Johnson Family Vacation (2004), to name
a few.
Kevin recently starred in An American Carol (2008), directed
by David Zucker, in which he plays a cynical, anti-American
“Hollywood” filmmaker who wants to abolish the 4th of July
holiday. This parody of Michael Moore lampoons contemporary
American culture, particularly Hollywood, and uses the
framework of A Christmas Carol and its three visiting ghosts to
show him the true meaning of America. Soon to be released is
Kevin’s latest feature film, another comedy that he co-wrote,
directed and in which he stars, titled Hollywood and Wine.
Like his brothers, John began his comedic training at the
respected Second City in Chicago. He eventually relocated to
California and has appeared in films including Tommy Boy (with
his brothers), David Lynch’s The Straight Story (1999), Joe Dirt
(2001) and the comedy hit The Benchwarmers (2006). Other
credits include television series regulars on CBS’s Arrested
Development and Curb Your Enthusiasm. John’s involvement in
film and television includes many more movies and shows—
nearly four dozen television and feature film appearances are
listed by his agent. John lives in Pasadena with his wife Jennifer
and his children Harrison, age six, and Rowan, five. He currently
works in Hollywood writing movies, acting, directing and
producing his own material, often with his brother Kevin. A new
movie, on which Kevin and John worked together, will be
coming out in February 2013. Titled Back in the Saddle, it is a
comedic western set in Wyoming.
When asked for background information to write this
biography, Kevin and John provided us with much information
about themselves and about Chris. Their educational
backgrounds, their service and volunteer organizations, their
career development and highlights—all were extensive and
interesting. But the most illustrative comment on all of the
paperwork submitted had to be from John. When asked about
previous recognitions and awards, John lists being named EHS
Class Clown and the years 1984 to 1988. Hilarious!
CARYL F. & HOWARD W. BREMER
Servant Heart Award
Gas was 30 cents a gallon, a loaf of bread was 21 cents and a
postage stamp cost just 5 cents. The first Ford Mustang rolled off
the assembly line, the Beatles made their first appearance on The
Ed Sullivan Show, and Caryl and Howard Bremer began their
long and dedicated devotion to the Edgewood High School
community, serving the high school along with the other
organizations and institutions that are so important to both of
them. The year was 1964, and they both continue to be involved
in the school they love, for a total of over 78 years (so far!).
The Bremers’ volunteer service to EHS began when their
daughter Katharine ’68 was a freshman, and Kathy was later
joined by William ’70, twins Thomas ’73 and Timothy ’73, and
Margaret ’80. Two of Caryl and Howard’s grandchildren, Daniel
Sarbacker and Jennifer Sarbacker, graduated in 1997 and 2000
respectively. During the years their children were in school, the
Bremers were involved in many ways, from Edgefest to bingo,
PTA to installation of the sidewalk on Monroe Street; they also
were active with the Band Board, even storing in their basement
the fundraising chocolate the band sold; Howard served on the
Advisory Board from 1971 to 1980, acting as chair in 1973 and
1974, and served as the attorney for the school on a number of
different occasions; Caryl helped to raise funds for a number of
different causes by delivering pizza and fruit, and she was
involved in the fundraising project that required EHS volunteers
to take inventory at Prange’s Department Store, counting
everything from pieces of gum to shoes and furniture. Their
volunteer roles were many and varied, and they both were willing
to pitch in whenever and wherever necessary.
Caryl continues to volunteer at EHS on a full-time basis. She
comes in every morning, all year long, Monday through Friday,
before anyone else has started the day and works diligently in
Alumni Records. She maintains a database with over 13,000
names and has a 97% mailing accuracy with the post office, an
amazing feat. In addition, Caryl is the resident historian at
Edgewood, and her knowledge of the many different facets of the
organization is exceptional. She continues to manage the many
and varied mailings done by EHS each week, handling all of the
in-house, “smaller” bulk mailings (some up to 3,000 pieces). She
is the welcoming face of the school for many different events and
gatherings when she serves as a greeter. Caryl says, “Although I
have never received compensation for any of my volunteer
activities, the rewards were many. My closest friends are people
with whom I’ve worked on volunteer projects. During the 48
years I’ve worked here, I have formed close bonds with the
administration, the staff and many of the teachers. I cherish the
friendships.”
Caryl also has found the time to volunteer at her parish,
St. Maria Goretti. She was the associate editor of the Gatherings
newsletter for 13 years, was a member of the funeral choir, and
is active in a number of other ways. She is also a member of the
Madison Catholic Woman’s Club, where she has served on the
board from 1978 until the present, continues to publish their
membership book and has done all of their mailings since 1982.
Caryl has received a number of awards in the Madison
community, including the EHS Alumni Appreciation Award
in 1981, U.S. Representative Scott Klug’s Friend of Education
Award in 1996, the Catholic Charities Community Faith in
Action Leadership Award in 1999 and an honorary Edgewood
High School Diploma in 2008.
Howard is a veteran of World War II, having served in the
U. S. Navy. After working as patent counsel for the Procter and
Gamble Company in Cincinnati, Ohio for 12 years, he and his
family returned to Madison, where the children were enrolled in
Edgewood Campus School. That is where his remarkable
commitment to school volunteerism began. In addition to his
dedication to the Edgewood schools, Howard has worked
diligently for the Madison community in many ways. He
continues to maintain an office at Wisconsin Alumni Research
Foundation (WARF), where he has been employed since 1960,
and after his 28 years there as patent counsel, now acts as a
consultant. He has also served on the Patent Trademark and
Copyright Section of the State Bar of Wisconsin in a number of
different capacities, the Wisconsin Intellectual Property Law
Association in many positions, worked with American Bar
Association, the American Intellectual Property Law Association,
the Association of University Technology Managers, the
International Advisory Board of Industry and Higher Education,
and on the Advisory Commission on Patent Law Reform, all in a
variety of roles. Howard has presented more than 35 papers at
conferences worldwide which has allowed both him and Caryl to
travel the world extensively.
Howard’s volunteer work is plentiful and varied. Throughout
the years, he has worked with the Edgewood Campus and High
Schools, the Boy Scouts, Pack 128, and has done pro bono work
for individual inventors and contractors. He was a solicitor for
the American Red Cross, and served on the Advisory Board for
the BNA Life Sciences, Law and Industry Report and Industry and
Higher Education Journal in the U.K. The recognition and
awards that Howard has received include the Bayh-Dole Award,
1980, given by the Association of University Technology
Managers (AUTM), an Honorary Recognition Award from the
University of Wisconsin, College of Agricultural and Life
Sciences in 2000, the Jefferson Medal from the New Jersey
Intellectual Property Law Association, and the EHS Alumni
Appreciation Award in 1990. The “Howard K. Bremer
Scholarship” named for him allows five people to attend the
Annual Meeting of AUTM.
Carl Gulbrandsen, the managing director of WARF, when
asked about the influence the Bremers have had, said, “Howard’s
and Caryl’s impact on the Madison community has been by their
example of how to live one’s life, by their constant service to the
community and by their willingness to roll up their sleeves and
do the work themselves. At WARF, Howard has been an example
for all of us through his loyalty and dedication to WARF’s
mission. Howard has now worked at WARF for 51 years. He still
comes in each day and contributes. I don’t know that any of us
can beat that.”
