Overall, the auction and “Best of the Live” Raffle raised more than
$135,000, including about $35,000 in tuition assistance through the
open appeal for the Mazzuchelli Grant fund. The winner of the raffle
was Diane Endres Ballweg ’71, who will be enjoying a Mediterranean
cruise, donated by Celebrity Cruises and Dan Hanrahan ’75.
Kathy Kalscheur perused the silent
auction tables stocked with
functional and fabulous items.
Folks got their kicks…
plus a whole lot more!
Route 66 was the theme for the 2010 Auction and Social attended by more than
300 people who “traveled along America’s highway” from Chicago to Los Angeles
making stops along the way for regional food specialties and an occasional side
trip for attractions like the Diamond Dig sponsored by BR Diamond Suite and
the TV Frenzy sponsored by M3 and a thirst-quenching beverage at the watering
holes sponsored by FirstWeber Foundation. Of course, the majority of the trip
was spent visiting with friends and collecting “souvenirs” from the silent and live
auctions that featured more than 400 terrific items.

Shortly after I arrived at
Edgewood in May 2005,
I was informed that
tradition called for the President
to offer faculty and staff a “State
of the School” address each
spring. Needless to say, my first
state of the school was really more
of an opportunity for all of us to
“get to know you.” Since then,
the state of the school has been a
terrific opportunity to bring our
employee base together, offer
perspective on our successes and
challenges and share some of the
plans in place to move the high
school forward. In this Summer
2010 edition of Crusader
Connection, I’d like offer a
summary of the State of the
School address shared recently
with faculty and staff.
Success
Successes taking place at
Edgewood are numerous and
varied. The promise we make to
our families is that their students
will be challenged by a rigorous
academic curriculum and a gifted,
dedicated faculty and staff. I’m
proud to say that our students
have embraced this challenge.
Our ACT test scores continue to
outpace both state and national
averages. For the second
consecutive year, 77% of EHS
AP students scored 3 or better on
their AP exams meaning they have
qualified for college credit. Most
impressive is that academic growth
is taking place throughout the
entire student body.
Success also abounds in
our co-curricular and service
programs. More than 90% of
EHS students participate in an
activity outside the classroom with
many students involved in two or
more offerings. In December we
2 CRUSADER CONNECTION, SUMMER 2010
The State of the School:
Strong, Cautious, Optimistic, Practical
Judd Schemmel, President
celebrated the Christmas season
with a vocal and instrumental
concert that included more than
40% of the student body. Our
spring musical, Anything Goes!,
played to sold-out crowds and
brought 53 students to the stage
with many more involved through
the pit orchestra, set and tech
crews. Throughout the greater
Dane County community,
students will perform more than
30,000 hours in service to those
in need. Whether in the classroom
or in the community, Edgewood
students are wonderful examples
of the Dominican model of Study,
Reflection and Action.
I’m both humbled and
heartened by the support
Edgewood receives from parents,
alumni and friends. Our parents’
belief in Edgewood was further
illustrated in the results of a
satisfaction survey conducted at
our 2009 summer registration.
93% of those responding felt very
satisfied with the experience their
family is having at Edgewood, and
90% indicated that Edgewood
offers strong value when
considered in relation to tuition.
Work Continues
While success at Edgewood is
evident and inspiring, challenges
are present and demand our
attention.
Efforts to generate income are
simply more difficult today. For
many, the prospects of making a
charitable gift or pursuing
enrollment for their child are
made more difficult given the
current financial climate. This
year, charitable giving to
Edgewood is running very similar
to 2008-09. We’re thankful that
we have been able to maintain a
level of giving while many other
non-profit organizations are seeing
significant declines. For those of you who have made a gift to
Edgewood’s Annual Fund, I offer my sincere thanks. To those
who are still contemplating a gift, I cannot express more
strongly that your support is needed and your participation is
central in our ability to maintain a balanced budget and retain
the programs and services that set EHS apart.
This year we said goodbye to 150 seniors. We anticipate
welcoming a freshman class of 150-160. Our marketing efforts
will be focusing on the quality of the Edgewood experience and
the value of an Edgewood education. We hope to more fully
engage our parents, students and alumni in sharing this message.
The Admissions Office outreach will center on deepening our
relationship with traditional feeder schools and continue to
uncover creative, effective ways to reach non-traditional
audiences. For those of you who have read my past writings on
the work of our Admissions area, you know that I feel our
parents and alumni play a key role in EHS’s enrollment success.
A willingness to share your experience, offer perspective on the
value of our programs and people, and express what Edgewood
has meant to your family is a powerful influence and can carry
the day with families considering enrollment.
Fiscal stewardship not only involves being diligent and
creative in our efforts to secure needed funds, it also involves
strong expense management. Our academic and administrative
departments have done a tremendous job of managing their
expenditures. Additionally, the high school’s Leadership Team
regularly undertakes cost benefit analysis of all the high school’s
operations.
Strategic Direction
In the coming years, our work will be guided by a new
strategic plan. Recently finalized, the strategic plan will have
as its foundation four primary goals:
1. To educate, nurture and challenge our students in an
inclusive school community rooted in the Dominican
tradition
2. To establish long-term fiscal security
3. To update EHS facilities with an emphasis on safety,
increased accessibility and learning needs
4. To strengthen internal and external relationships through
effective communication
We’re excited to bring this new strategic direction forward
and engage the full Edgewood community as we seek to live out
our mission.
Facilities Planning
Over the last year, a group of parents, board members, faculty,
staff and industry experts have come together to formulate a
Facilities Master Plan (FMP). Passed by the Board of Trustees in
March, the FMP sets the vision for the future of our buildings
EHS Academic Excellence Award.
• The 2009 Wayfarer, Edgewood’s student literary
and art magazine, was one of only two Wisconsin
high school literary magazines to receive a
“Superior” ranking from the National Council of
Teachers of English (NCTE). The NCTE annually
reviews student literary magazines for quality,
variety, editing and proofreading and design/artistic
aspects. In Wayfarer’s 24-year history, NCTE has
consistently ranked it “Superior.”
• Chris Martinelli ’90 was named the State Coach of
the Year, Midwest Coach of the Year and National
Private High School Coach of the Year for girls’
soccer. In January, he attended a ceremony in
as did nine soloists: seniors Molly Lins, Jessica
Moon, Emily O’Brien and Simon Smith, juniors
Patrick Juan, Katherine Langston and Chris Payne,
and sophomores Matt Allen and Steffen Lake.
• Dieter Bukolt ’10, and juniors Katherine Langston
and Jonathan Wild were the students with the best
three plans in the Starting Your Own Business
class, sponsored at EHS and the four Madison
public high schools by the Business and Education
Partnership. Following interviews with a panel of
bankers (Ken James, Jill Thomas and Matt
Karnick from First Business Bank) Jonathan Wild
was selected as the winner of the top business plan
at EHS, earning him a cash prize in addition to
attendance at an awards ceremony with the three
winners from each of the schools. This year’s
ceremony was hosted by Susan Bulgrin (parent
of alumna Julie Bulgrin ’99) and her business,
Culver’s Restaurant-Todd Drive, on February 16.
Susan and one of the Culver’s managers, Brian
Haugen, also served as volunteers for the class
throughout the year. In addition Susan generously
sponsors an annual Ice Cream Social for EHS
students, faculty and staff each May.
Edgewood Participates in Haiti Relief
Edgewood’s aviation teacher, Diane
Endres Ballweg ’73, and her son, Ben
Ballweg ’97, traveled to Haiti with Haiti
Outreach, a mission team. It was Diane’s
first visit to Haiti, though Ben had been
there five times before, starting with his
Peace Corps experience about 10 years ago.
Their mission group consisted of nine
people and the team was assigned to clean
and paint a school in the rural town of
Pignon in the central inland area of Haiti.
Pignon has no electricity, no cars, no paved
roads and no water source other than a
river.
Diane said that in addition to working
on the school, “We got to visit schools,
churches, hospitals, orphanages, fresh wells,
attend community soccer games and visit
with the local residents. Beyond a doubt,
Haiti’s people need clean and safe water,
paved roads, electricity and education, but
they also need to develop a sense of selfconfidence
and responsibility for their own
Catholic Schools Week.
• In February, Edgewood
celebrated Catholic Schools
Week with the theme this
year of “Dividends for Life.”
Students were given play
money and asked to write on
it the “dividends” they have
received while attending a
Catholic school. At an allschool
liturgy, the money was
deposited into a giant piggy
bank to symbolize the
investment made by students,
parents, faculty and staff to
develop effective leaders and
compassionate citizens. Other
activities included a food
drive, a school spirit day, and
an assembly in which
students competed for the
Dominican shield. The class
of 2011 is now engraved on
the shield, with previous
winning class years.
future. The trip taught us, among other
things, to be thankful and appreciate of our
abundant blessings.”
In addition to working with Haiti
Outreach, the Ballwegs were able to present
the group with donations to the
organization from Edgewood students,
parents and faculty. The Edgetones, an
a capella vocal group which science teacher
Eric Pantano advises, held a “Harmony
for Haiti” concert and sold CDs to raise
$1,700 for Haiti relief. In addition, the
freshman FIT program raised another
$2,000 and further donations of $500 were
contributed.
“Edgewood Reads” encourages
students to pick up a book not
required for class
The EHS Library’s inaugural “Edgewood Reads”
program brought actor and author James DeVita to
campus on February 9 to discuss his novel, The
Silenced, which students had been encouraged to
borrow and read before DeVita’s visit. During his
presentation, DeVita did a dramatic reading of a
chapter from the book, which was inspired by the
real story of Sophie Scholl, a young German who,
along with her brother and friends, protested the
Nazi regime and were captured, tried, and executed
for their actions. DeVita also provided some
background into the research and writing process
and took questions from the audience.
Madison’s Overture Center for the Arts instituted the Tommy Awards (named
Wisconsin native and actor Tom Wopat) in 2009-2010 to celebrate excellence in
musical theater at area high schools. A panel of educators, theater experts and
industry professionals review the shows after which productions and individuals
in specific categories are recognized at a red carpet awards ceremony that features
performances and production numbers from the winners. Edgewood’s spring
production of Anything Goes! was recognized as one of six Outstanding Musicals
(multiple awards are presented in each category)
staged by schools throughout south-central
Wisconsin. The show also garnered Outstanding
Choreography for Katrina Brunner (who directed
the show) and Robin Fonfara. In addition,
Outstanding Leading Performer honors went to
Jennifer DeMain ’10 and Charlotte Martin ’10 who
State of the School
continued from page 2
and will assist in our effort to ensure we offer a safe
and healthy physical environment that is conducive
to learning. Among the key considerations and
points of emphasis that arose from numerous
listening sessions are: continual efforts to enhance
safety, improvements to bathrooms, renovation/
remodeling of the Commons, improvements in
overall accessibility and continued efforts to
refurbish additional classrooms.
The passing of this plan does not mean a capital
campaign is imminent. However, it does mean our
annual deferred maintenance decisions will be
informed by the FMP. Over the course of this
summer we will be moving from deferred
maintenance associated with the infrastructure of
the facilities to improvements that will be far more
visible. We will be undertaking a modest facelift to
our Commons. The two bathrooms located in the
Commons plus select bathrooms within the building
will also see improvements. We will be redesigning
the floor in our main (Wilke) gym and we will be
looking at external door points for reconditioning
or replacement and security-related upgrades.
Thank You
I offer this summary with pride, determination
and faith. I could not be more proud of our faculty
and staff and the work they pursue daily. I feel this
same pride for our students and the relationship we
enjoy with our families, alumni and friends. I know
I speak on behalf of everyone at EHS in saying that
we are more determined than ever to see that
Edgewood flourishes in the months and years to
come. Our faith is unwavering that together we will
chart a wonderful future for all Crusaders.
Thank you for a great year!
Summer 2010 is bringing big changes as the Commons
is being renovated (EHS’s Mike Glick shown above
resurfacing the walls), bathrooms are being upgraded
and the south stairwell is being replastered and painted,
among other facilities improvement projects.
Crusader Court
recognition moved
After a number of years of hosting the Crusader
Court donor recognition dinner at Nakoma Golf
Club in May, the decision was made to combine the
event with Edgewood’s dinner at which Alumni
Awards are presented and new inductees to the
Athletic and Fine Arts Halls of Fame are honored.
Once a part of Edgefest, for more than a decade the
awards dinner has been incorporated in Alumni &
Friends Reunion Weekend.
The combined event on August 20, to be held in
the Edgewood Commons, comes with a renewed
focus on bringing together donors with people
representative of what their financial generosity
supports. The dinner is themed“Living the Mission”
and honorees reflect the range of ways in which
people carry out the values in Edgewood’s mission.
In addition, a new annual award will be instituted
this year. The Servant Heart Award will be given
to a person who exemplifies Christ as the humble
servant, a person who has used the privilege earned
or experienced in his or her own life to help and
serve others who are less fortunate.
10th Anniversary of Sister Kathleen
O’Connell’s death marked
In May, a memorial service was held in Sacred
Heart Chapel to mark the death in an auto accident
of Sr. Kathleen O’Connell, principal of Edgewood
High School 1955-1984. She saw enrollment peak
in the 1960s and then helped sustain EHS through
lean years by implementing a number of fundraising
activities and starting an endowment. The EHS
auditorium and the endowment are named in
her honor.
Fine Arts Festival and Grandparents’ Day Traditions Continue
For an entire week, EHS is given over to a
celebration of the arts, with a day dedicated to
guest performances by professional and semiprofessional
musicians, actors, artists, dancers,
writers and others. In addition, students show
off their talents for two days, either in the
Student Talent Showcase or with special
presentations. Faculty get into the act as
well, hosting a film festival. Grandparents are
invited to have breakfast with the students
before attending the Showcase, and an
increasing number are taking advantage of
the opportunity to spend some enjoyable time
with their grandchildren.
This year’s student performers (clockwise at
right) included contemporary dance duo Sarah
Bellissimo ’11 and Cole Thongnuam ’12; vocal
and guitar duo Jessica Rentmeester ’11 and
Erin Mulvoy ’11; actors Charlotte Martin ’10,
Jessica Moon ’10 and Conor Murphy ’11 in
original short plays by students; and harp
soloist Claire Petchler ’10.
recognize exceptional contributions in the arts. The awards are presented during Alumni and Friends Reunion Weekend. For additional
information on criteria or types of nominees for each award, visit the “Alumni” link on the EHS homepage, www.edgewoodhs.org.
Edgewood needs the help of our alumni and friends in identifying people who deserve recognition. Please complete the form below and
The EHSAA is kicking off a new series of events for alumni, parents, students and
friends of Edgewood High School. During the summer, Madisonians congregate
on the Capitol grounds on warm Wednesday evenings to listen to the Wisconsin
Chamber Orchestra play concerts of light classics, contemporary standards, and
even polkas and waltzes. What better activity for the first get-together than the
“Let It Be” tribute to The Beatles on July 21?
Edgewood’s group will meet in the Circle beginning at 5:00 p.m. Bring a picnic
or just mingle with your fellow concert-goers before taking your picnic with you
on the bus ride to the Capitol Square at 6:00 p.m. for the 7:00 p.m. concert.
The bus ride is only $5 per person, saving you the cost of parking downtown
(and the hassle of finding a spot!), and it will bring you back to EHS after the
concert has concluded so you can avoid fighting traffic on streets around the
Square! Space will be reserved on the Capitol grounds for any friends of EHS.
Look for the maroon and gold balloons on the south side of the Square.
To make sure we save plenty of room (seating space is at a premium for these
popular concerts!) RSVP by Monday, July 19, to Tammy Ehrmann, the Director
of Alumni Relations, at ehrmtam@edgewood.k12.wi.us or 608.257.1023 x185.
CRUSADER CONNECTION, SUMMER 2010 9

Edgewood High School
of the Sacred Heart will
soon be celebrating 130
years! Wow! I had to sit back
and really think about what
an accomplishment that is, in
and of itself. But Edgewood
has not only survived for
130 years, it has grown and
continually thrives in an everchanging
world. What really
“hit home” with me was the
thought of all the ways that
Edgewood High School has
had an impact: on the
community, on the current
students, on their parents,
grandparents, on past and
present faculty and staff, and
especially on alumni and
their families.
For many, Edgewood is
and was a “home away from
home,” and for some students
and Sisters was quite literally
“home” when the school was
founded in the original villa
as St. Regina Academy at
Edgewood and later when
rebuilt and renamed Sacred
Heart Academy, a boarding and
day school, and even in the
early days of the college when
some of the female students
lived in the high school tower.
Edgewood’s history is rich
with academic, arts and
athletic accomplishments and
the traditions are timeless. The
lives of five (going on six!)
generations of families have
been intertwined with the
history of Edgewood and our
“extended family” tree includes
about 9,000 living alumni,
plus the many who are now
deceased, and their families,
a tree that includes literally
tens of thousands of leaves.
As you read this take a minute to reflect on some
of your own memories and what Edgewood has
meant to you over the years. I would love to learn
more of your “memories” and encourage you to send
me a note or email (linkmar@edgewood.k12.wi.us).
I also hope as you read this you will feel that you,
your children, your grandchildren (or all of you!)
received an excellent academic, faith-based education
that has served as a preparation for doing well in
college and throughout life. I also hope that if you
haven’t already done so, you will consider making
a gift to the Annual Fund to ensure that EHS can
continue its great
traditions and provide
educational experiences
for future Crusaders.
I recently read an
editorial in the Diocese of
Madison Catholic Herald
that caught my attention.
In the article there was
mention that if the
millions of adults who
had benefitted from
Catholic education would
step forward financially to
help the next generation,
Catholic schools would be
able to continue to provide
faith-based educational
experiences and could continue to thrive.
As EHS alumni, I hope you will consider
supporting EHS with your time, talent and treasure.
We have worked hard to make it “easier” and more
“convenient” to give with our on-line giving option
at www.edgewoodhs.org/give.
Often, when I am speaking with younger EHS
alumni, I ask them to consider a gift that would
equate to the cost of a delivered pizza or a latte at
their favorite coffee shop. I encourage other alumni
to attend the annual Spring Auction & Social, to
purchase a raffle ticket or to “brown-bag” their
lunch for a week and donate the equivalent. Most
importantly, I want each and every donor to know
that a gift of any amount is greatly appreciated.
Whatever the size or type of gift, it is valued and
means a lot to us because we know you have made
a sacrifice to make EHS a better place.
An alumni family tree — literally!
Jane Addamo-Reinke bought a new tree to
replace the one originally planted in her family’s
name. The tree planting was part of a campaign
to relandscape the Circle Drive in celebration of
the Edgewood Centennial in 1981. Tom Wilke
’60 of McKay Nursery, drew up the plan and
45 trees were purchased by or in honor of
families, staff and classes. Over the decades,
storms brought down many of the older trees on
the Edgewood grounds and others were removed
as a consequence of age or the relandscaping of
campus at the end of the 1990s.
Let’s Make
It a Date!
Tammy Ehrman, Director of Alumni Relations
Reunion season has arrived at Edgewood High
School! This past month, the class of 1995
held its 15th Year Anniversary Reunion at the
Club Tavern in Middleton, and many alumni and
their families were in attendance. I have the honor of
attending reunions as a representative of the school,
often with Dennis McKinley ’63, and it is wonderful
to see a group of people who have one thing in
common—an excellent educational experience at
Edgewood— reconnecting on a new level. The EHS
Alumni Association (EHSAA) works to ensure that
connection with the EHS community remains, even
in years when your class isn’t hosting a reunion, and
that you feel welcome and want to maintain your
connection to EHS.
The EHS Alumni Advisory Council has been busy
over the past few months creating some new events,
fine tuning others, all in an effort to help stay
conected with the school. We are excited to offer
new ways for you to become more involved, and
hope you continue to take advantage of all that EHS
has available.
One of the new ways to reconnect with your
friends and fellow graduates of EHS, as well as other
groups associated with the school, is the first in our
new series, “Edgewood Goes To…,” which offers a
fun-filled, easy way to enjoy an outing to one of the
many events Madison and the surrounding areas
offer. Each of these events will begin and end at
Edgewood, allowing you a way to meet and attend
with a group of EHS friends.
Our first “Edgewood Goes To…” event is the
Wednesday evening Concert on the Square on
July 21, 2010 (see the details on page 9). We will
gather at the school for a bus ride to the Capitol
Square, where space will be reserved for the group.
Just think – no parking, no jostling for space on
the lawn, and a relaxing evening of music under the
stars—all with friends of Edgewood!
The Council has also been fine tuning Alumni
and Friends Reunion Weekend, which is August 20
through 22, 2010, on the Edgewood Campus.
There are a range of gatherings available including
golf, an evening beer tent, the EAA Raffle party,
the annual awards (and this year, donor
recognition) dinner and induction, a luncheon in
honor of our senior alums, and an outdoor Mass.
We hope you are able to find the event that
works best for you. The schedule will be available
online soon, and you should receive a mailer
with all of the details in the next few weeks.
Please consider joining us in some capacity this
summer and connect—or reconnect—
with Edgewood!
Among the attendees at the class of 1995 reunion were Mary Allen Ziegelbauer,
Ed Herro and Jessi Sweeney Pacetti.
Dear Fellow Parents of Alumni, Fellow Alumni and Fellow School Parents,
As you can see from my salutation, as of this May I now belong to several different
constituent categories at Edgewood High School, and I am enjoying taking advantage of
everything that membership in those constituencies offers me and my family. The many
ways to become involved at Edgewood allow me to connect with the school on a variety of
different levels.
My daughter, Julia, graduated this year and I am so proud that she has become an
alumna of EHS. We chose to give Julia a Legacy Gift Lifetime Membership, a special halfprice
offer for Lifetime Membership in the EHSAA given to families of graduating seniors.
This gift enables her to remain connected to Edgewood throughout the years and supports
the school’s current mission. Her graduation also allows me the opportunity to become the
parent of an alumna, a group that has been targeted by the school for increased
communication and contact.
I was honored to speak to the graduating class of 2010 as a representative of the
Edgewood High School Alumni Association Council, along with James Imhoff III ’93, as they
celebrated this milestone in their lives. We also informed them that the EHSAA was giving
each of them a one-year Annual Membership to the association as a gift in honor of their
new status. The EHSAA is always actively looking for support, which you can offer by joining
the association or by becoming involved with the Alumni Advisory Council. I have enjoyed
being the President of the Council since its inception three years ago, and continue in that
position for the coming year. If you are interested in the EHSAA or the AAC, please feel free
to contact me.
In addition, my son is now a sophomore at Edgewood. I have enjoyed meeting and
working alongside the current parents of students, and continue to be amazed at the levels
of dedication and commitment those parents exhibit on a daily basis. The sacrifices made to
send our children to EHS can be great, and to see the many ways parents make those
sacrifices is a tribute to the great education EHS offers.
I greatly enjoy my connections to EHS, and encourage you to become involved in some
way. Our Alumni Relations Department is always available to you, and can give you
information on some of the ways you can reconnect or connect with the school.
Sincerely,
Joe Kemnitz ’65
Alumni Advisory Council President, dad to Julia ’10 and Joseph ’13
E-Transcripts Have Arrived!
Students and alumni from the class of 2008 forward who are completing
college applications can now order and send their transcripts via “Docufide,”
an online document/ transcript service. E-transcripts are becoming the preferred
method of receiving transcripts for most colleges and universities. Edgewood was
one of a few schools lucky enough to be selected to be part of a pilot program
here in Wisconsin.
What makes e-transcripts/Docufide unique is that students or alumni can,
from the convenience of home, order transcripts to be sent for a very small fee
($2.25). Most colleges prefer online applications, so once prospective students or
alumni send their online applications out to the colleges of their choice, they can
connect into Docufide and send the transcript out as well. Compared to the
traditional process of ordering a paper transcript, documents can be ordered and
sent within minutes, at any time. For more information on e-transcripts, please
visit the Docufide site at www.docufide.com. A convenient link has also been
placed on the Student Services page of the EHS website, www.edgewoodhs.org.
