INFORMATION FOR MEMBERS OF THE EDGEWOOD HIGH SCHOOL COMMUNITY
Principal Perceptions
By Bob Growney, Principal
Advent Season
On Sunday, December 2, 2012, Advent begins. Waiting,
preparing, praying—these are the activities of the mind, heart and
body to which we are called during the Advent season. The irony
of the Advent season is that it occurs at time when we are least likely
to have the energy and inclinations to respond in such patient and
thoughtful ways, given the myriad demands that we place upon
others and ourselves.
Yet, we need to create the time and space in our busy schedules
to calm ourselves, reflect, and give thanks for the numerous and very
special gifts each of us brings to our life and work within the multiple
communities in which we have invested our energy and compassion.
As we tend to lose perspective of what is truly important— to our
well-being and our spiritual being—Advent calls us to stop…
refocus… listen… and to be patient, calm and quiet! We need to
prepare to nurture and support new life for ourselves and for others.
May we be blessed with balance, hope and joy
during this humbling and holy season.
May we be blessed with wealth and wisdom.
May we worship as God intends.
May the gifts that you give be the gifts you receive:
Goodness and Mercy
Generosity and Peace
Amen.
Parent-Student-Teacher Conferences
Many thanks go to all the parents and faculty members whose
involvement made this event another success. Teachers saw an average
of 40 parents and more than 2,000 individual parent-teacher
conferences occurred. Your support is greatly appreciated.
First Semester Exams: December 17-21
All classes are required to have a final exam, which may count
between 10 to 20 percent of the final grade in any given course.
Each teacher individually determines the specific percentage for each
course. The report cards have a place for a final exam grade, so this
will also be reported at the end of each semester. Students need only
attend for exams on these days, as classes are not in session. The
Commons will be open for study and food service will be available
until noon.
Grandparents’ Day Forms Due!
Edgewood High School students will be looking forward to
welcoming their grandparents to Grandparents’ Day on Thursday,
February 21, 2013 during the annual Fine Arts Festival. EHS
grandparents are invited to share in the lives of their grandchildren by
attending a continental breakfast in the Commons at 8:30 a.m.
Following breakfast, they will adjourn to the Wilke Gym for the
“Student Talent Showcase” at 9:26 a.m., featuring musical, dance and
dramatic performances by Edgewood students.
Please complete the Grandparents’ Day form that is included in
this edition of Edge on the News or download off our web site at
edgewoodhs.org and return the form to the General Office by Friday,
December 7, 2012. If you have any questions, please contact Jan
A REFLECTION ON EDGEWOOD The first of a three-part series
By Judd Schemmel, President
As I complete my tenure as President of
EHS in June 2013, I’d like to take the
opportunity to share some concluding
thoughts with you through a series of EOTN
articles. This first piece will center on where
we have come as an institution over the past
eight years; part two will focus on Edgewood
of today; and the final installment will
address my thoughts regarding the challenges
and opportunities awaiting Edgewood in the
future. I hope this series will provide a
glimpse into the work of the President and
reconfirm for you the important role EHS has
and will continue to play with our families,
our alumni and throughout the greater
Madison community.
It seems fitting that this first installment
will be published around the time of the
Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. The
sentiments of gratitude, faith and family that
surround these holidays are those I think of
when reflecting on the past eight years.
When I arrived in May 2005 there was a
prevailing sentiment, partially true and
partially based on perception, that Edgewood
had lost some momentum, had taken a step
back. The reality was that the high school was
in a difficult financial position. The financial
challenge stemmed from the combination of
lower enrollment, declining donations and
capital projects not fully funded which very
naturally led the high school to increase its
borrowing and to set aside deferred
maintenance needs of the facility. Early on,
I felt that we were getting back on the right
track following my first meeting with the
Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees
where a resolution was passed that the high
school would no longer pursue capital
projects unless 100% of all necessary funding
was either in place or pledged. Since 2005,
the fiscal discipline inherent in this policy has
permeated our financial dealings and has
resulted in consistently balanced budgets,
fiscally sound projects that have improved our
facility and operations, and an 80% reduction
in our structural debt.
I’ve always felt that the faculty, staff,
Board of Trustees and parents have all been
willing to work together for the good of the
institution. What I believe may have been a
point of weakness eight years ago, and is now
a position of strength, is the existence of a
strategic direction. Whether it’s the high
school’s overall strategic plan, now in its third
of five years, our mission-based business
model or our facilities master plan, these core
documents have kept us centered on our
mission, enhanced our offerings, improved
our economic condition and brought
meaningful improvements to our facility and
grounds. Another improvement to our
strategic direction has been a shift in
accreditation to the Independent Schools
continued on page 2
2
A Reflection on Edgewood continued from page 1
Association of the Central States (ISACS). The rigor present in the ISACS
accreditation and review process included a full and substantive review of
our instructional and operational functions and has brought a level of
accountability not present in past accreditation relationships.
A comprehensive look back on accomplishments of the past eight years
would be incomplete without including communication. Whether
internal or external, the amount of information flowing to and from a
high school is truly remarkable and demands constant assessment of our
strategies related to effective communication. I believe the single most
important and impactful communication advancement realized during my
tenure has been the introduction of PowerSchool. Not only has this tool
brought academic and operational information to parents on a more
timely basis, PowerSchool has also proven to be an effective time
management and organizational tool for many of our students. In addition
to the introduction of PowerSchool, two substantial upgrades of the EHS
website have enhanced content and navigation for current and prospective
families as well as our alumni and the general public.
While it’s appropriate to acknowledge the value of all we have in place
for electronic communication, there is no better communication venue
than an in-person conversation. Among the initiatives in place to enhance
face-to-face communication is a program focused on meeting with the
parents of every incoming freshman, transfer student and outgoing senior.
To date, we’ve had more than 500 of these conversations and they have
been instrumental in enhancing our understanding of how students are
making the academic, social and faith/service transition into Edgewood
High School. We’ve also worked with our Edgewood Parent Community
to offer “open forum” question and answer sessions where lead
administrators are available to address issues foremost on the minds of
our parents.
While any review of past accomplishments may appear to be selfgratifying
and self-serving, I’m confident that those with whom I’ve had
the pleasure to work and come to know during my tenure understand my
view that any progress we’ve made has come about through the collective
effort of our team and our community. We can all be proud of the work
we’ve pursued together to attain the achievements of the past eight years.
attended a Parent Q&A event in the past, we encourage you to join
us for what is always an informative forum.
Thanks go to Teri Kennedy and Erin Lacey for organizing the
distribution of Christmas cookies to the EHS faculty and staff on
December 3—and many thanks to the numerous bakers and
delivery elves who helped make this fun and festive tradition
possible again this year!
The EPC will continue to host informal Parent Connection
coffees at Victor Allen’s on Monroe Street in the New Year. Thanks
go to the planning efforts of Parent Outreach coordinators Camilla
Corcoran and Dawn Grelle. Please check the website and watch for
email announcements for upcoming dates.
All parents are welcome to attend EPC Board meetings on
the second Tuesday of each month at 1:00 p.m. in the Library
Conference Room; upcoming meetings include December 11 and
January 8. If you can’t attend you can still read minutes from the
meetings, posted on the EHS website under the “Parents” tab.
May you and your families have a blessed Christmas season!
EHS PRESIDENT SEARCH UPDATE
The process underway to find Edgewood’s next
President will soon shift into more robust evaluation and
interviewing activities. To date, the Search Committee
(David Stein, Ave Bie, Londa Dewey, Brenda Foti and
Sr. Maggie Hopkins, with staff assistance from Cindy
Hamburg) has worked closely with Madison-based QTI
to develop a list of candidates. More than 70 individuals
have formally applied for the role.
Through the end of November, the Committee spent
significant time narrowing the field to the most viable
candidates and will begin a series of in-depth interviews in
early December. Finalists will be determined by the end of
the year, with additional interviews and a final selection to
occur early in 2013, enabling a smooth transition when
Judd Schemmel steps down.
ZAPS Practice Test, Spring 2013
ZAPS Learning Company will be holding an ACT test prep
seminar Mon & Tues, May 6 & 7, 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m at
Edgewood High School in the CCC for interested students. The
cost for each seminar is $79. Register online at ZAPS.com.
AP Exams for Independent Study Topics
Advanced Placement Exams will be administered at Edgewood
High School starting on May 6th and continuing through May 15th.
Students who are enrolled in an AP course will automatically be
registered to take the corresponding AP exam. The fee for these exams
was included in the course fee assessed at the beginning of the school
year and no additional payment is necessary.
In addition to exams for AP courses offered at Edgewood, each
year there are several students who have been studying independently
for AP exams not offered as courses. Although the student will not
receive credit on his/her transcript for a corresponding course, he/she
may still take an exam in any subject to potentially earn college credit.
Each exam that is NOT offered as an EHS course has a $100 exam
fee. If you have been studying independently for a specific AP exam,
are interested in taking an exam for a course you are not enrolled in,
or have any questions regarding AP exams, please contact Mrs. Ladell
in Student Services by the end of February.
Talking to Your Teacher:
Ten Tips for Self-Advocacy
As our first semester wraps up and grades start rolling in, students
are getting a good idea of what their strengths and weaknesses are this
school year. In the Student Services department, we are always
advocating for students, but also want students to advocate for
themselves. Per our student handbook policies, if students have
concerns about their progress or grades in a class, they are to first
contact the teacher of the class in question. Below is a list of 10 steps
and tips for students to follow to ensure an effective and positive
conversation with their teachers.
1. Make an appointment to meet and talk.
2. If you know other students who feel the same way you do,
consider approaching the teacher together.
3. Think through what you want to say before you go into your
meeting with the teacher.
4. Choose your words carefully.
5. Don’t expect the teacher to do all of the work or propose all of
the answers.
6. Be diplomatic, tactful, and respectful.
7. Focus on what you need, not on what the teacher might be
doing wrong.
8. Don’t forget to listen.
9. Bring your sense of humor.
10. If your meeting isn’t successful, get help from your counselor.
Sterling College
By Michelle Borleske, Student Services
If your student is looking for a unique post-high school
opportunity, she or he may want to consider Sterling College. I met
with Jake Oudheusden, Sterling’s Assistant Director of Admissions,
and was impressed with their creative approach to education.
A small liberal arts year-round college located in the northeast
corner of Vermont, Sterling is devoted to the theory and practice of
environmental stewardship. Majors include Natural History,
Environmental Humanities, Conservation Ecology, Outdoor
Education, Sustainable Agriculture and a self-designed major created
from a combination of the other program noted above. As one of
only seven federally designated Work Colleges in the country, all
students are assigned jobs related to their field of study and are paid
$10/hour directly applied to their cost of attendance. All students are
required to have a 10-week internship and complete an outdoors
expedition experience, and most students complete Study Abroad or
Field Education programs in places ranging from Belize to Iceland.
Seniors: Reporting First Semester
Grades to Colleges
By Michelle Borleske, Student Services
At the start of the new year, the colleges to which you have applied
may send you a request for mid-year grades. Their purpose is to
ensure that you’re continuing to succeed throughout senior year and
are preparing to begin college on a strong note.
Some colleges, like UW-Madison, may send you a special web link
where you will self-report your final first semester grades. Please be
100% accurate to list your grades exactly how they appear on your
report card. Certain colleges may provide you with a form to bring to
your counselor, and others yet don’t require any mid-year grades to be
sent. The colleges will let you know what they want to pay attention
to those emails, texts and mailers sent over the break.
Other schools, including all Common Application schools, may
require an official transcript to be sent again via
www.parchment.com. Beginning January 7, 2013, all you have to do
is log-in to your Parchment account, go to “MyTranscripts”, select
“Deliver”, select the schools you want to receive your semester grades,
and submit payment. Since you’ve already entered all the information
for your original transcript request, the process this time around will
be simple and quick.
If you have any questions about your mid-year grades, please see
your counselor or Ms. Ross in Student Services for assistance.
If You “Like” EHS, Let It Show
By Meredith Temple, Interim Admissions Director
In Admissions at Edgewood one of our biggest challenges is getting
the word out to new audiences about all of the countless ways our
students, faculty and staff are doing exceptional, interesting and exciting
things. As any EHS family knows, there is not just one great thing about
the experience people have here. It is the whole experience—the one you
are having as parents or guardians, and the ones your students are having.
The most remarkable thing about Edgewood is the fact that it is great
because it is countless “little” things that add up to something big.
You’ve been asked to help spread the word to other families you know
about what makes Edgewood High School of the Sacred Heart so
wonderful. Your encouragement for a family to take time to learn about
the experience is one of the most valuable endorsements we can get.
Okay, actually, your students sharing why they like their EHS experience
is the grand slam of effective endorsements. But there is another very easy
way for you to help spread the word about Edgewood High School, and
it is a click away. “LIKE” is on Facebook. Seriously.
If you are a Facebook user and you have friends in or around
Madison, your “LIKE” of Edgewood High School means that not only
have you said you like us, but you have then allowed our posts to appear
on your news feed. Then, if you make a comment on one of Edgewood’s
posts, then our initial post will be seen by the people who are your
Facebook friends. This means when there is an EHS post that shares
information and you choose to comment on it, your friends will see it as
well. The Edgewood Facebook account shares a variety of “slice of life”
tidbits that go a long way in telling our story in a unique way. We try
hard to keep our Facebook identity separate from the Web site
(important information). Instead, we use Facebook as a unique storytelling
vehicle that is capable of not only sharing information, but
generating it via comments. It’s fun to see our word spread to new
audiences as it travels via our fans’ social media network.
If you haven’t done so, find “Edgewood High School” on Facebook,
and be sure to confirm that you are looking at OUR Edgewood High
School by seeing the address 2219 Monroe Street in our initial
description. You’ll also see the Dominican shield. Take a minute to see
what our Facebook style is, and then if you like us, LIKE us. And then
comment, comment, comment. We love your input and it also helps us
get known for ALL that we are within the wider community.
Freshmen & Final Exams:
LINK Crew Connects
With “Cocoa & Cram”
By Jim Baltus & Shannon McDonough
LINK Leaders (junior and senior
mentors to freshmen) have been a steady
presence throughout the first semester, a
connection that started at the 8th Grade
Dance last spring and was followed by
phone calls and two gatherings during the
summer, Student-Parent Connection Night
in June and Freshman Orientation in August.
As we near the end of the first semester, we are giving freshmen the
opportunity to participate in a fun and valuable activity called “Cocoa
and Cram.” On Monday, December 3 and Wednesday, December 5 from
3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., LINK Leaders will be holding study sessions for
freshmen in the school library to help them prepare for their first final
exams. There will be tables set aside for each major subject, with two or
three LINK Leaders per table who will offer peer tutoring and give study
skill advice, and faculty and staff on hand to assist in the program.
Cocoa and cookies will be served throughout the study sessions.
Freshmen will be informed of the event in their classes. This is an
“open door” study session for freshmen; there is no sign-up or response
needed before the event. We just ask that students arrive at 3:30 p.m.
and remain until at least 5:00 p.m. If a student needs to leave before
5:00 p.m., we will need a note signed by a parent excusing the student at
a particular time. Students will sign in and sign out at a library table.
Your child should bring books, calculator, notebooks, study guides, or
whatever is needed for the study session. As well as the refreshments, we
will also provide note cards for students to use as needed. Students can
remain at one table for the duration or get assistance in more than one
subject. Your child is invited to come to either or both afternoons.
Even if you feel your child doesn’t need “tutoring” in a subject, this
will be a beneficial group study session. LINK Leaders will give insight
to how exams are set up, explain teacher expectations, and share their
experiences on how to study for certain subjects. We hope your ninth
grader will be able to take advantage of this free program. If you have any
questions, please call Ms. McDonough at 257.1023 x128.
Trivia Night was a Great Success!
By Barb Kolb, Director of Fundraising Special Events
On Friday, November 16, more than 250 EHS parents and friends
enjoyed the 5th Annual Trivia Night in support of the school and the
Music Department. Contestants deliberated through eight rounds of ten
questions in various categories, including Badger State Brainbusters,
Scien-sational and You Want Me to Eat What? In addition, the “Nose to
Toes” raffle, silent auction items and the “Heads or Tails” game brought
entertainment as well as income to the evening.
Participants were very creative in their table themes this year! The
winning theme was “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” hosted by Jean
Mescher, parent of sophomore Tom Guerin, and the “brainiest team”
was the table hosted by Madison-area attendee Richard Chatlosh.
We extend our thanks to our generous sponsors; Associated Bank,
Brad & Nicole Smith, the Merfeld Family and the Healy Family for
helping us by backing the event. We also thank all those who donated
gift cards or prizes to the event. Finally, a thank you goes to all of the
judges and parent volunteers.
Trivia Night is a great evening to socialize, meet new Edgewood
families, and to support all students participating in EHS music
programs. We look forward to another great event in 2013 and hope to
see you and your team there!
Set in Damon Runyon's mythical New York City,
this oddball romantic comedy—considered by many
to be the perfect musical comedy—soars with the
spirit of Broadway as it introduces us to a cast of vivid
characters who have become legends in the canon:
Sarah Brown, the upright but uptight “mission doll,”
out to reform the evildoers of Times Square; Sky
Masterson, the slick, high-rolling gambler who woos
her on a bet and ends up falling in love; Adelaide,
the chronically ill nightclub performer whose condition
is brought on by the fact she’s been engaged to
the same man for 14 years; and Nathan Detroit,
her devoted fiance, desperate as always to find a spot
for his infamous floating craps game.
Everything works out in the end, thanks to the
machinations of Abe Burrows and Jo Swerling’s
hilarious, fast-paced book and Frank Loesser’s bright,
brassy, immortal score, which takes us from the
heart of Times Square to the cafes of Havana, Cuba,
and even into the sewers of New York City. Funny and
romantic, Guys and Dolls is ideal for audiences and
performers of any age.
Dominican Mission
at a Glance
Guided by a Dominican Star
By Julia Slotnick, Campus Minister
’Tis the season of darkness, cold, loneliness and
uncertainty for some. Our Catholic Dominican
tradition here at Edgewood provides another
perspective. As children we learned about the star of
Bethlehem, leading the way for the shepherds and
kings to baby Jesus. We learned about the healing
and hope for life that Jesus brought about in
ministry as an adult. The icons of St. Dominic show
him with a star, sometimes with a dog carrying a
torch. He was known as the “joyful preacher,”
shattering the myth that materials are evil, traveling
on foot to bring conversion to those who doubt. St.
Catherine of Siena, a Dominican lay woman and
Doctor of the Church, is known for her Dialogues,
peace-making diplomacy, and communication with
popes and concern for people who were ill. She said,
“Be who God meant you to be and you will set the
world on fire.” Fr. Samuel Mazzuchelli carried this
legacy to our region, making Christ available
through sacraments, education and community
building.
Our Sisters guide a path towards inclusion,
generosity, and gratitude. Food drives, service hours,
youth groups, retreats, community fundraisers,
clothing donations, worshiping together, arts and
music…and most of all, being present to our
friends, family and neighbors. This is the season to
relax, even find extra time for reflection. Prayer can
motivate us to act with compassion and truth for
justice and community. What does your eternal
spark of joy look like? What light of truth do you
seek? Does your faith community inspire each
other?
Thank You and God Bless!
By Mary Link, Director of Institutional Advancement
In this season of gratitude, please know how very
grateful we are for all of the Parent Pledge donors
and volunteers who have joined with Edgewood
High School to ensure the continuation of our
mission to educate the whole student for a life of
learning, service and personal responsibility through
a rigorous academic curriculum that embraces the
Sinsinawa Dominican values of Truth, Compassion,
Justice, Partnership and Community. Your
partnership strengthens our school, supports faculty
and staff and helps to preserve the Edgewood
tradition for excellence today and into the future.
I would like to wish all of our families a Merry
Christmas and Happy New Year! We are blessed at
Edgewood High School to have one another and to
celebrate this holiday season. May the Peace of
Christmas bring Joy to you and your family this
holiday season and throughout the coming year!
Thank you!
We Appreciate Your Outstanding Support!
Thanks go to all the parents/guardians who have already chosen to participate in the
Annual Fund through the Four-Front or Parent Pledge program in 2012–2013.
Last Call For Recipes!
We Need Your Favorite Recipe
for the Let’s Eat Too! cookbook
by December 20!
By Colleen Penwell
Kitchens are starting to hum with the sampling and
testing of recipes submitted for the EHS Let’s Eat Too!
cookbook. But we need many more recipes to make our
cookbook a hit!
We’re asking all EHS families and staff to submit
your favorite and most-requested recipe(s) and there are
three easy ways to do so:
1. Photocopy or jot down your favorite recipe (with
your name!) and turn it into the General Office.
2. Use the form at right, following directions below.
3. Use the online site (linked to the EHS web site):
• Go to: www.typensave.com/get-started/
• User name (3 words, case sensitive): Let’s Eat Too
• Password (case sensitive): recipe
• Read message, type your name and click “submit”
• Follow prompts to add recipe ingredients and
instructions.
• Be sure to “save” before logging out or adding
another recipe.
And once recipes are submitted we’ll need help with
the best job of all… tasting and testing! Watch for a
SignUp Genius email in the days ahead requesting
volunteers to test one or more recipes for the cookbook,
or contact Colleen Murphy Penwell at Penwell@tds.net.
We hope to create a cookbook chock-full of unique
and tasty favorites. We need YOUR help to make Let’s
Eat Too! a mouth-watering success!
