4 LEADERSHIP SPEAKS I have made it clear time and time again that no amount of money is worth the loss of a life. Once again please take this message as a reminder to all of us to recommit to continuously working and improving our safety performance for ourselves, our families and our colleagues. We are not in a business to injure people, as I always say, “an injury to one is an injury to all”. An injury is of great concern to this organisation. Let us all learn from the misses and zero energy exchange incidents and prevent harm to all. It is absolutely crucial that we focus on improving our cost performance, and cost control is imperative. We should all commit to applying business excellence. While the world economy seems to have averted a full blown economic crisis, and with major economies starting to restock their product pipelines, we look forward to seeing continued improvements in cost from our departments changing Optimum Coal from a good business into a great one! The immediate outlook for the global economy continues to be unpromising and the fundamentals of our business remain solid as we seek to bring in new volumes. OPTIMIZER An injury to one is an injury to all Through focus and commitment, we ended the last quarter of 2009 with improvements towards safety. It is not only possible, but also absolutely vital to create a safe working environment for all Optimum Coal employees as well as contractors. Although our goal is Zero Harm, the increase in reporting is encouraging as it shows that we are becoming very aware of potential incidents and are reporting them before they happen and incur injury or damage to equipment. Through each and every employee’s and contractor’s commitments, Optimum Coal can celebrate. The continued improvement in our safety performance at Optimum Coal is particularly encouraging, but we are all reminded that this trend will only continue with a continued focus on risk awareness by all employees, as well as contractors. Phase one of the Boschmanspoort project has been completed and the fi rst coal through the conveyor belt was extracted and stockpiled to feed the processing plant. Congratulations to the team! As a company founded on principles of living up to the aspirations of transformation in the country, we have a vision to become the country’s benchmark South African owned and controlled mining and exploration group. Optimum Coal engaged a verifi cation agency recently to ascertain its level of contribution as per the DTI BBBEE Code of Good Practice. This is a structured process and the evidence is gathered to the full satisfaction of the Code’s requirements. The results have confi rmed Optimum Coal as a Level 5 contributor with certain key areas of improvements and further evidence on ownership. Lets us all keep the momentum going. Coal wage negotiations were recently concluded without a dispute being declared and a two year agreement was signed. Many thanks for your commitment at our successful Greatest Train Race 2009. A number of excellent initiatives were launched and the results bear testimony to their success. I would like to encourage all employees and contractors to hold on to our guiding principles of Safety, Tons and Cost and, in so doing, ensure that our organisation goes from strength to strength. Let’s continue to work safely and responsibly as a team to re-affi rm Optimum Coal’s commitments to its core values. In conclusion, thank you for your dedicated work. Let us continue to project the Optimum Coal values of Empowerment, Integrity, Care, Respect, Purpose Driven, Simplicity and Accountability. Second Leadership Summit Optimum Coal leads the way Optimum Coal’s second Leadership Summit was recently held at Optimum Colliery. Presentations made by EXCO members were all followed by searching questions and lively discussion, ensuring that the leadership walks the talk and lives the Optimum Coal values at all times. The purpose of the Leadership Summit was to ensure that all stakeholders are aware of Optimum Coal’s current status. This will also help foster healthy relations with leadership and other stakeholders as Optimum Coal promotes transparency. A business update was provided to the broader leadership of Optimum Coal and a platform was created for the Executive Committee and the Operational Leadership to network. A highlight of the event was the surprise celebration of Optimum Coal’s fi rst birthday. This milestone was reached on 1 July 2009. Optimum Leadership tucked into the celebratory cake. Hip Hip Hooray!!! Through everyone’s effort, commitment and dedication, Optimum Coal will see many happy returns.
