Overview of machine translation<br />

• As in other fields within computational linguistics, two<br />

classes of methods<br />

- Symbolic/linguistic<br />

. Grammatical rules <strong>and</strong> explicit lexicons for each languages; explicit<br />

correspondence rules between the languages<br />

. Based on grammars, dictionaries, <strong>and</strong> linguistic theories<br />

- Statistical<br />

. Co-occurrence regularities between words (within <strong>and</strong> between languages)<br />

are learned.<br />

. Based on large corpora of texts (monolingual <strong>and</strong> bilingual) <strong>and</strong> on theories<br />

from machine learning (AI) <strong>and</strong> bayesian statistics<br />
