Green Bush and
SA Black Thing
GREEN BUSH: Over one heartbreaking but
empowering night, local DJ Kenny realises his job
at the community radio station is about more than
just playing music. Kenny jokes that his Green
Bush show is broadcast to a ‘captive’ audience
namely the local prison. While taking requests
from those on the inside and out, Kenny has to
cope with the results of a wild night outside and learn his place in the circle
of violence. Green Bush is a celebration of an era of music, working for the
cause and getting things done. But not in the way you would expect. SA
BLACK THING: For brash young salesman Clinton Spice (Michael Tuahine),
life is looking up. He’s been sent to a tropical paradise, all expenses paid,
to close the deal of a lifetime. But on the eve of his all-important pitch his
documents are stolen by Crystal (Kylie Farmer), a vivacious young thief,
and he sets out to track her down all before his deadline. But what he gets
is the last thing he ever expected.
The Djarn Djarns and
Plains Empty
THE DJARN DJARNS: Frankie Dollar is eleven years
old. He is the leader of an Aboriginal traditional
dance group, the Djarn Djarns Dancers. The Djarn
Djarns operate from Australia’s largest Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander cultural centre, the
Dreamtime Cultural Centre in Rockhampton. They
are young urban black fellas, with a responsibility
to keep their culture alive. PLAINS EMPTY: A young Aboriginal woman has
recently moved to an isolated mining town with her man. When he has to
set up camp at a far-off mining site, she is left to spend more time on her
own, but she begins to question whether she is really alone. After her dog
runs away, the history of the little shack she calls home begins to come
alive. Plains Empty is a story about a young woman surviving in a harsh
and alien environment, where her only company is the ghost of a little girl
and a grumpy old man across the plains.
Long Journey,
Young Lives
Long Journey, Young Lives
presents an intimate insight
into the experiences of child
refugees. From the violence and danger of their
homeland, to their perilous journey and detention
in Australia, young refugees present an uninhibited
account of their experiences. This program also
explores the opinions of young Australians on
issues surrounding asylum seekers. School children, all aged 12 years or
under, express their views on mandatory detention, boat people, queue
jumpers and consider whether Australia has a responsibility to accept
refugees.
Tales from a Suitcase
The Afghan Experience Series
In this seven-part series, a range of Afghan
people relate the circumstances of their journey to
Australia from the late 1970’s to the present. It is
the story of the broad mosaic of their time: first
under Communist, then Mujaheddin and finally
Taliban control. Some were refugees who took the
highly dangerous sea voyage to Australia, only to
be thrown into detention centres. For others, the
memories are of violence and death, of dispossession and escape, and
the deep sadness of a family left behind.
