Storytelling
Storytelling has long been an inspiration for visual
art, and it remains a strong element in the work
of artists today. The artists featured in this first
episode include Kara Walker, Kiki Smith, Do-Ho Suh
and Trenton Doyle Hancock. These four artists tell
tales through architecture, literature, mythology,
fairytales, and history. Working in a variety of
materials, these contemporary artists provoke
their audience to think about their own stories,
the morals and messages, and the beginnings and
endings that define our real and imagined lives.
CENTURY SERIES 3
NEW
2007
Art:21—Art in the Twenty-First Century
is the only series to focus exclusively on contemporary
art and the people who create it. Like the great biennial
art exhibitions that regularly showcase current artistic
activity, Art:21 returns to profile working artists who
build our living culture with each painting, sculpture,
photograph or installation that they create. 2006. Set of
Loss and Desire
Thoughts and responses to themes of loss and
desire surface in many areas of our lives, from the
philosophical to the emotional. Specific works of
art cause us to contemplate issues such as war
and peace; the loss of community and the desire
for connection; the age-old human longing for
perfection, whether in the form of games or in the
universe as we understand it through science and
myth; and questions about the nature of beauty.
The artists featured in this program are Collier Schorr, Gabriel Orozco and
Janine Antoni.
Time
The element of time is always present in our
interaction with works of art, whether we sit to
contemplate a painting for a few moments, stroll
past a sculpture, or watch a video piece for its
entire duration or cycle. Some works of art are
time-based in that the viewer must experience
them through the passage of time, as with
music, while others refer to time through links
or references to art history, our collective human
history, or the timelessness of nature. This episode features work by Martin
Puryear, Paul Pfeiffer, Vija Celmins and Tim Hawkinson.
Wilson, and Richard Tuttle, and concludes with
Humour
This final episode explores the ways in which
contemporary artists use irony, goofiness, satire
and sarcasm. The four artists profiled in this
program - Eleanor Antin, Raymond Pettibon,
Elizabeth Murray and Walton Ford - have been
influenced by the history of humour and comedy,
including vaudeville, cartoons, and comic books.
Working in a variety of media, including drawing,
painting, performance, photography, and print
making, their artwork’s reveal how humour and satire can stimulate
laughter as well as serve as a vehicle to explore serious subjects, such
as feminism, the natural environment, the excesses of consumer culture,
social injustice and war.
