Ethiopia
Pria begins his Ethiopian exploration in Jinka, a
small town on the edge of the lush, green Omo
Valley in south-western Ethiopia. The lower Omo
Valley is home to many small, tribal groups - each
practicing their own, distinctive culture. Pria
meets members of the Mursi tribe who shed light
on the extraordinary custom of women who, upon
reaching maturity, insert a clay disc in their lower
lip - the bigger the better!
Madagascar
For Malagasies, the process of exhuming ancestral remains and rewrapping
them in fresh shrouds while catching up on village gossip is nothing outof-the-ordinary.
The Famadhiana or “turning of the bones” ceremony is
where Pria begins his journey through Madagascar. Ancestral worship
underpins Malagasy culture and this ceremony is a chance for the living to
pay their respects to the dead.
Zanzibar
“Zanzibaris are like Pilau” says Mohammed Ali
(not the champ!) over lunch with Pria at “The
Passing Show” restaurant in Stone Town. Like the
rice dish which is generously flavoured by a variety
of colourful spices, the ethnic mix of Unguja Island
is varied and includes; Swahili, Shirazi Persian,
Portuguese and Omani Arab. Although officially
part of mainland Tanzania, Zanzibar is culturally,
politically and architecturally unique.
Mali
Pria’s journey into Mali begins with Timbuktu, home to the Tuareg people
who roam the semi-desert; next, south to Mopti on the Niger River and
then into the heart of the country of the Dogon, known for their intricate art
forms and unique, decorated mud houses. Pria visits the Grande Mosquee
in Djenne; and talks with French-based, Malian singer, Rokia Traore, about
her country’s renowned musical tradition, before following her to Paris.
Black Paris
From wide-boy comedians to angry authors, Pria
ends this series on Africa in Paris. Given France’s
large colonial influence in Africa, Pria samples
the African diaspora in Paris - asking why they
are more French than African and why France is
perceived to have been a “better coloniser” than
the rest.
Viswalingam takes his own quirky ride around this most
famous of seas. From the Grandeur of Venice, a sinking
city with a sinking population, to a tanner’s family in the
ancient city of Fez in Morocco, to the hedonistic delights
of a sultry summer in the south of France. Also stopping
at Israel, Spain, Turkey, Gibraltar and Greece, it’s an eight
France St Tropez
The French Riviera, playground of the rich and
famous where one needs deep pockets and a fat
wallet. Pria Viswalingam takes on the character of
Templeton, a well to do businessman on his annual
sybaritic leave in the little village of Ramatuelle, in
the hills above St Tropez. Templeton indulges in
the sights, the sounds and, above all, the tastes
are in overdrive, in this very different look at how
the nouveau and not so nouveau rich entertain
themselves.
Gibraltar
At the very entrance to the Mediterranean Sea
stands ‘the Rock’. Gibraltar has been a British
possession for exactly 300 years. In that time it
has formed its own culture from the myriad of
peoples who have come to live here, a culture that
is neither Spanish nor British but unique to the
rock. What is it like to live in a country that is only
six and a half square kilometres with nearly thirty
thousand inhabitants?
Greece Kythera
Kythera, the idyllic Greek island of Aphrodite,
goddess of love. But what is the reality of living
on such a small island. Pria Viswalingam meets
both the locals who are scratching a living from the
soil and the new arrivals who have come in search
of a dream. But then the stuff of dreams is what
supplies the people of Kythera with a future and a
past. An island of legends and myths that fertilise
the island’s robust grapevine which keeps today’s
gossip spicy and abundant.
Israel
Pria Viswalingam travels the ancient biblical
highways to one of the worlds oldest countries
and yet one of its youngest, Israel. At the heart of
Israeli culture is the kibbutz. “From each according
to his abilities, to each according to his needs.”
was their creed, a noble socialist sentiment, but
how have they fared in today’s world, a world of
individualism and consumerism? From the delights
of the Dead Sea to a decidedly non kosher Tel Aviv,
Pria delves into the reality behind the dream.
With the backdrop of Venice as his canvas Pria
Viswalingam explores the realities of Italy facing
a falling population. With the country now relying
on immigrants to bolster the workforce, the family
structures, that have stood for thousands of years
are changing. Meet Danielle Baker, an Australian
actress living near Venice.
Spain Barcelona
They might be Spanish but first they are Catalans.
The area around the city of Barcelona is almost a
country within a country. Pria Viswalingam looks
at their architecture, tastes their food and tries
to gain some understanding of the psyche of the
modern Catalan and discovers that some of the
old prejudices die hard.
Morocco, a surprising land of sun, surf, sand, and
even snow. A moderate Islamic country caught
between two worlds. In the ancient city of Fez, Pria
Viswalingam meets a poor tanner trying to earn
enough to feed his family.
Turkey
Pria soaks the senses in Turkish history, Ottoman
cuisine and local wine before heading to the
mountains to refresh and replenish the soul with
the good folk of Aydar - a tiny alpine village that
could be mistaken for chocolate-box Switzerland
except for the huge mosque in the middle of it.
