Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s first play, ‘The Rivals’,
is a portrait made of material from his own life,
his scandalous marriage to a popular singer of the
age and the characters he had come to know in
the town of Bath. Sheridan’s great satire turns the
familiar world of arranged marriages, courtship and
rivalry on its head. One of the sharpest and funniest
social comedies of the late Eighteenth Century is
presented here in the perfect setting of a theatre
built just nine years before the play was written.

The Winters Tale
The Royal Shakespeare Company performs one
of Shakespeare’s late plays, ‘The Winters Tale’.
Written around 1610-11, Shakespeare used
Robert Greene’s romance, ‘Pandosto’, as his
source for ‘The Winters Tale’, which provided him
the Leontes-Hermione-Polixenes plot and the love
story of Perdita and Florizel. However, Shakespeare
made some crucial changes, most notably a new
ending of hope and reconciliation. Stars Antony
Sher, Alexandra Gilbreath, Emily Bruni and Geoffrey Freshwater.

Painting with Light
in a Dark World

the deviants of an unknowable underworld. In the
thick of this chaos is a photographer who has seen
and immortalised it all. Peter Darren Moyle has

with his old 1936 medium format camera,
illuminating the darkest shadows of the city’s
