Point. a mission parish of St. James; the "Ladies<br />
of the Catholic Church in Potosi" served dinner<br />
to the public on August 24,1,909, at 5 p.m. Ice<br />
cream and other ref reshments were served, f ollowed<br />
by an evening of dancing; parish women<br />
held an Oyster Supper at Settle's Hall in Potosi<br />
on November 24.L909; during a week in May,<br />
791.4. a mission was held at St. James Church<br />
with a "large crowd of Catholics and Protestants"<br />
in attendance.<br />
On November 13, 7907, The Potosi<br />
Journal carried the obituary of a well-known<br />
and respected member of St. James and the<br />
community - Judge John R. Higgins. Judge<br />
Higgins, who had immigrated here wiih his<br />
mother and siblingsfrom Canada in 1861, and<br />
favored the side of the Union in the Civil War,<br />
resided in the county for forty-five years "making<br />
his home on a farm near this place." He was<br />
elected presiding judge of the county court in<br />
1890. and "was always recognized as an honest<br />
man. a consistent Christian and a pairlotic citizen.<br />
and it is right and just that every good man<br />
should respect his memory."<br />
