UNITED WAY: United Way <strong>of</strong> Central Illinois is<br />

holding a Holiday Card Art Contest. Children ages<br />

7 to 12 are invited to submit a drawing that says<br />

"What United Way means to me." The winner will<br />

receive a $50 gift certificate and a United Way Tshirt<br />

and their artwork will be used as a cover <strong>of</strong><br />

United Way's 2002 holiday card. Entries are due to<br />

the United Way <strong>of</strong>fice by October 15. Go to<br />

RUN FOR EXCELLENCE: The Springfield Public<br />

<strong>School</strong>s Foundation is sponsoring a five mile run<br />

8:30 a.m. Saturday, October 26, at the Lost Bridge<br />

Trail behind the Illinois Department <strong>of</strong><br />

STAFF UPDATE: June P. Lang has been named director <strong>of</strong> development<br />

at the <strong>School</strong>. Previously, she was on the development staff at<br />

Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., fundraising for Student<br />

Services and the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Agriculture (1995-2002). She has five years<br />

experience in administration for Purdue’s international programs in agriculture<br />

(1979-84) and was owner/manager <strong>of</strong> a floral business for 14<br />

years. Lang earned her bachelor’s degree at Purdue (1979) and a certificate<br />

in fund raising management at Indiana University Center for<br />

Philanthropy (1995).<br />

CIVIL SERVICE UDATES: A Civil Service election will take place<br />

11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 15, in the Harbinger conference<br />

room, 801 N. Rutledge, and room 3A153, St. John’s Pavilion. Alice<br />

Costa, Surgery, and Lynne Cleverdon, Medical Humanities, are candidates<br />

for campus representative to the State Universities Civil Service<br />

Advisory Committee. For additional information, contact Janet Stormer,<br />

Current Catalog is donating to the Civil Service Council 50% <strong>of</strong> each<br />

item purchased. These funds will help to fund prizes for the holiday<br />

reception. Orders will be taken through November 1 by contacting a<br />

member <strong>of</strong> the Civil Service Council or Current’s website www.currentfun.com.<br />

Choose Illinois and <strong>SIU</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Medicine</strong> Civil Service<br />

FLU SEASON IS COMING: Details for flu shots have been distributed to<br />

all Springfield faculty, employees, retirees, graduate assistants, medical<br />

students and residents. Flu vaccinations will be <strong>of</strong>fered, free <strong>of</strong> charge,<br />

at various times and locations during October. A $5 fee will be charged<br />

to spouses and dependent children and retirees and their spouses. For<br />

DEPRESSION SEMINAR: David Resch, M.D., <strong>Medicine</strong>, will present<br />

“When the Blues Cloud the Healing” at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 8, at<br />

Wedeberg Conference Center. This is part <strong>of</strong> a free depression and anxiety<br />

screening <strong>of</strong>fered by Memorial Behavioral Health Group. For more<br />

PRESENTATION: Syed Gilani, M.D., <strong>Medicine</strong>, presented “Electronic Home Monitoring Reduces Hospital Admissions, Length <strong>of</strong> Stay<br />

and Readmission Frequency in a Selected Heart Failure Population” and “Electronic Home Monitoring Has an Early Impact on Hospital<br />

Financial Resource in Class III and IV Heart Failure Patients” at Heart Failure Society <strong>of</strong> America's annual meeting in Boca Raton, Fla.<br />

in September. Gilani also presented two posters “Pacemaker Pocket Discomfort Due to Dystrophic Calcification” and “Electronic Home<br />

Monitoring Reduces Hospital Admission, Length <strong>of</strong> Stay and Readmission Freuency in a Selected Heart Failure Population” at the<br />

Central Society <strong>of</strong> Clinical Research meeting in Chicago in September.<br />

Barbara Mason, Medical Humanities, presented the history <strong>of</strong> medicine to the Genealogical Society at the Taylorville Historical<br />

Society and to the State Home extension service in Springfield this fall.<br />
