TECHNOLOGY GRANTS: The <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Medicine</strong> has received one <strong>of</strong> two state<br />

grants awarded to <strong>SIU</strong>C to establish Illinois Technology Enterprise Corp. (ITEC)<br />

centers. The $285,000 grant to the <strong>School</strong> will fund the Technology Development<br />

Center <strong>of</strong> Springfield, which will provide services primarily to the biomedical<br />

research and health care community and be focused on developing licensable,<br />

marketable and useful biotechnology. Larry Aut, director <strong>of</strong> technology development<br />

and transfer at <strong>SIU</strong>, will serve as executive director <strong>of</strong> the Springfield ITEC<br />

center. <strong>SIU</strong>C will use its $375,000 grant to establish Southern TECH at the Dunn-<br />

Richmond Economic Development Center in Carbondale.<br />

CLASS ELECTS OFFICERS: Seventeen <strong>of</strong>ficers and committee members have<br />

been elected for the class <strong>of</strong> 2003. Abigail Krause <strong>of</strong> Piper City and Jessica<br />

Weinstein <strong>of</strong> Peoria were elected chairs <strong>of</strong> the senior class. Leah Delfinado <strong>of</strong><br />

Rochelle was elected secretary. Jamie Ikeda <strong>of</strong> Springfield was elected treasurer.<br />

Dana Ray <strong>of</strong> Decatur and Craig Higgs <strong>of</strong> Dunlap were elected class representatives<br />

to the student general assembly. The following were elected to committees:<br />

Chris White <strong>of</strong> Thousand Oaks, Calif, Year 3 and 4 curriculum; Karen Whitehorn<br />

<strong>of</strong> Chicago, library advisory; Matthew Lavery <strong>of</strong> Quincy, educational policy; Joel<br />

Kary <strong>of</strong> St. Joseph, representative to the organization <strong>of</strong> student representatives;<br />

Mark Luetkemeyer <strong>of</strong> Peoria, admissions; Michael Erlandson <strong>of</strong> Smithshire, and<br />

Sheetal Patel <strong>of</strong> Springfield, student advisory; Dan Couri <strong>of</strong> East Peoria, and<br />

Amanda Mulch <strong>of</strong> Quincy, student progress; Rafath Baig <strong>of</strong> Chicago, educational<br />

policy/information management policy; and Charles Boley <strong>of</strong> East Peoria, information<br />

UNITED WAY: United Way <strong>of</strong> Central Illinois is<br />

holding a Holiday Card Art Contest. Children ages<br />

7 to 12 are invited to submit a drawing that says<br />

"What United Way means to me." The winner will<br />

receive a $50 gift certificate and a United Way Tshirt<br />

and their artwork will be used as a cover <strong>of</strong><br />

United Way's 2002 holiday card. Entries are due to<br />

STAFF UPDATE: June P. Lang has been named director <strong>of</strong> development<br />

at the <strong>School</strong>. Previously, she was on the development staff at<br />

Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., fundraising for Student<br />

Services and the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Agriculture (1995-2002). She has five years<br />

experience in administration for Purdue’s international programs in agriculture<br />

(1979-84) and was owner/manager <strong>of</strong> a floral business for 14<br />

years. Lang earned her bachelor’s degree at Purdue (1979) and a certificate<br />

in fund raising management at Indiana University Center for<br />

Philanthropy (1995).<br />

CIVIL SERVICE UDATES: A Civil Service election will take place<br />

11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 15, in the Harbinger conference<br />

room, 801 N. Rutledge, and room 3A153, St. John’s Pavilion. Alice<br />

FLU SEASON IS COMING: Details for flu shots have been distributed to<br />

all Springfield faculty, employees, retirees, graduate assistants, medical<br />

at various times and locations during October. A $5 fee will be charged<br />

to spouses and dependent children and retirees and their spouses. For<br />
