Breaking new ground

Letter from Head of School
Dear Marian Family,
Another year has passed and a warm summer full of opportunities and growth awaits us.
We spent last year reflecting on doors and “Opening Doors to Opportunity.” The newest
door is preparing to be opened—the Performing Arts Center door— due to the generosity
of many benefactors. Throwing the door wide open is a close friend of Marian, Mary
Joy Anderson. We are so blessed by the Anderson family’s leadership, philanthropy and
friendship. The ability to expand Marian’s offerings and opportunities to young women
is paramount for growth. We are excited by the possibilities and our vision for the future.
It is with great admiration and a humbled heart that I say “thank you” to all of you. I
have had the joy of being the Head of School at the most meaningful school for three
years now, and it is beyond words to express how grateful I am to have this opportunity.
Every month I share “Mission Moments” at our staff meetings. I am never short of
examples of how Marian faculty and staff continue to model the charism of the Servants
of Mary and the Mission of Marian. Marian would not be what it is without all of you.
The gifts of time, talent and treasure that are lovingly bestowed on us by you are beyond
measure. Thank you for giving so generously and believing in Marian so fully.
Next year will be a bit messy, and at times inconvenient as we have “deconstruction”
to allow for construction. I appreciate your patience and understanding in realizing that
this temporary inconvenience will provide an enhanced campus and permanently open
doors for young women to explore their gifts and talents. If you have not been to Marian
recently, or are out of town, visit our website to see regular postings of our construction
progress.
God bless,
Marian High School is a Catholic,
college preparatory high school
for young women founded by the
Servants of Mary and dedicated to
Mary, the Mother of God. Marian
teaches the beliefs of the Roman
Catholic faith in a caring and
loving community atmosphere.
The mission of Marian High
School is to commit all its
resources to the college
preparatory education of young
women, teaching them to be
leaders and life-long learners in
a society where their talents and
faith will give hope to
the world.

Marian Today
Since Marian opened its doors in 1955, the young women who have come and gone have continued to
prove themselves as empowered, confident, independent, thinking leaders; Marian today is no different.
Our Marian girls are embracing leadership roles in the classroom, on the stage, on the court and in their
community.
Below you will find the many accomplishments and accolades Marian girls have recently earned.
Senior Honors day
Marian’s faculty and staff recognized the Class of
2012 for their accomplishments at the annual Senior
Honors Day assembly on May 15, 2012. Department
awards were presented by each department
head, and Assistant Principal Kathleen Tompkins
presented the Academic Excellence Awards. At the
close of the ceremony, nine members of the Class
of 2012 were honored with special awards for
their tremendous efforts in leadership, service and
academics.
Marian girl of the Year: This award is
traditionally bestowed upon the young woman who
best embodies the true spirit of being a Marian girl.
This year, Morgan Schumacher was honored with
Marian’s prestigious Marian Girl of the Year award
because of her integrity, compassion, leadership and
dedication to serving others.
Service awards: Service Awards are given to
those young women who have made significant
impacts on their peers and the Omaha community
through their selfless acts of service and compassion.
Through their service work, georgia andresen,
Townley have enhanced their leadership skills and
discovered the impact they have made on the world
through their own journeys of faith.
It takes a special young woman to serve
as the Mistress of Ceremonies for Marian’s
commencement. This year was no exception.
Tyesha o’neal was named the well-deserving
recipient of this honor because of her unique
ability to serve as a dynamic and humble leader
within her school and community. Ty’s positive
attitude and dedication to Marian make it easy
leadership skills to impact the lives of others within their
homes, their school and their community.
Marie Guyot, who became a member of the order that
precipitated the Servants of Mary, is a model of the
Senior declaration day
This year, the counseling department began a new tradition at Marian which
will now be known as “Declaration Day.” This event is aimed at emphasizing the
importance of the college selection process by giving the underclasswomen an
opportunity to see the diverse colleges and universities that Marian girls attend
each year. On May 9, 2012, each senior wore her college or university t-shirt and
stood to be recognized as each college or university was called in alphabetical order
at an all-school assembly. This event gave the Class of 2012 the unique opportunity
to share their college selections with the rest of the student body, faculty and
staff, and be recognized for their four years of academic dedication. Marian looks
forward to sharing this event with the Marian community as well as the greater
Omaha community in the years to come.
world. Amy received a Bachelor of Science
Degree in broadcast journalism with a minor
Marian held its annual May Crowning Ceremony on May 8, 2012,
to honor Mary, the Mother of God. This special ceremony signifies
how the Marian community crowns Mary by living her example daily.
Marian hopes that each student finds her personal relationship with
Mary, a relationship that will help her serve, be true to who she is and
accept God’s plan for her future.
This all-school ceremony includes some very special guests who have
played an integral role in the event since 2006. Each year, the Alumnae
Board invites second-grade daughters of Marian alumnae who
received the Sacrament of the Eucharist to share in the celebration.
Dressed in their First Holy Communion gowns, 23 second graders
processed with the May Queen and placed a rose at the foot of the
Statue of Mary, signifying their blossoming faith. Following the
ceremony, the second-graders and their mothers enjoyed a cupcake
reception and tours of the school hosted by Alumnae Board Chair,
rose nolan Byam ‘70.
The Class of 2012 chose classmate Tyesha o’neal ‘12 as this year’s
May Queen. Ty was chosen for her confidence and leadership; her
work to achieve social justice; her compassionate presence and her
faithfulness as a friend. When asked what this honor means to her, Ty
explained, “Although I was chosen as the 2012 May Queen by my peers,
I feel that each and every one of my clasmates are the true queens.”
The End of an Era:
W ith a very heavy heart and very
appreciative soul, Marian says goodbye to
one of its most treasured assets, Assistant
Principal and Athletic Director Jim Miller.
Miller retired May 25 after 39 accomplished
years at Marian High School.
His inspirational spirit and compassionate ethics have endeared
Miller to the Marian community. Although his most outstanding
accomplishments are as a coach, Miller’s success can be
measured by much more than seven state championships and
myriad winning seasons. It’s Miller’s passion, hard work and
dedication that will be missed by many in the coming years. As a
coach, Miller instilled just as many life lessons as he did athletic
ones to his student athletes. With 612 wins and three state titles
as a basketball coach, his passion and respect for the sport is well
known. As the golf coach, Miller led his teams to four consecutive
state titles from 2007-2010.
“Jim has an innate knowledge of how to coach young women in
a competitive, yet compassionate manner,” said Susan Toohey,
Marian High School Head of School. “He expects the best, but
gives guidance and dedication second to none.” Miller began his
career at Marian in 1974 as a science teacher and junior varsity
basketball coach and in 1975 was named athletic director. One
of his first duties was to begin a Cross Country program in 1975
which he volunteered to coach. In 1976 he became the varsity
basketball coach marking the start of a storied coaching career.
Miller once said, “I’ve always loved everything about the sport,
from the games to the practices. I wouldn’t have changed a thing.”
In 1990 Miller was named assistant principal where he oversaw
campus and planning, hired and supervised coaches while
keeping his role as athletic director. Miller continued coaching
even as his workload increased tremendously. No longer did
Miller strive for perfection in athletics alone, but instead in all
aspects of Marian.
18

19
With sincere love for the job, he attended hundreds of fundraisers, award
ceremonies, games, and graduations. He watched as thousands of girls reached
their potentials, knowing he was a vital part of their success. To watch Miller
coach is to observe someone truly in his element. With a calm and determined
demeanor it’s no surprise he has driven Marian girls to such success. As his athletes
signed commitments to colleges, won awards, and shared in team relationships
that would last forever, the Marian, Omaha and Nebraska community became
mindful of the fact that Miller’s talents and dedication allowed girls to strive
beyond greatness and reach beyond their goals and expectations. Miller’s talent
and success was rewarded many times over with accolades including election
election to the Nebraska High School Hall of Fame for Coaching (2011), Nebraska
Coaches Association Girls Basketball Award (2007), Metro Basketball Association
Girls Coach of the Year (2001), Nebraska Girls Coach of the Year (2000) and
Nebraska State Athletic Administrators Association Athletic Director of the Year
(2005).
Over the years, Miller’s students have shed tears as they graduated, grateful for
his unwavering dedication and leadership during their time at Marian. Now that
the tears and gratitude are for Miller himself, the Marian community sends out a
sincere and heartfelt goodbye to one of its true legends. Although he will continue
to serve the Marian community over-seeing the development of the Mary Joy and
Tal Anderson Performing Arts Center, his decreased presence will be felt by all
who know him. With 39 years as a coach, director, mentor, and one of Marian’s
biggest fans, Miller leaves his mark on so much more than just its championship
banners.
rohlfs named new Marian ad
Rochelle Rohlfs, Marian math teacher and head volleyball coach, was named
athletic director shortly after Miller announced his retirement. Rohlfs has
coached the volleyball team for 23 years, has led Marian to two state titles and
three runner-up finishes. She will remain as the volleyball coach and will serve
as vice principal in addition to her duties as athletic director.
Advancing the Mission of Marian
Dear Marian Family,
I have learned very quickly that there is never a dull moment at Marian. There has been a
flurry of activity over my first 10 months, and it is nice to take this chance to reflect on some
of the successes of the year. The Marian Fund reached new heights through the hard work
of hundreds of volunteers, including General Chairs Tom and Janet Nichting and under
the apt direction of Marian Fund Director, Sue Mickey. This was the second year in a row
in which we reached 100% participation by both our current Board of Directors and our
Faculty/Staff, which is a testament to their commitment to the mission and vision of the
school. Our annual fundraising events, The Lexus Champions for Marian Golf Tournament
and MarianFEST, overseen by Advancement Events Director Shari Gilg, also exceeded their
financial goals and provided endless opportunities for community building and fun. Thank
you again to the chairs of these events who made them possible!
Another exciting development this year was a reinvigoration of our alum base. Alumnae
Director Nancy Casey worked tirelessly to restructure Marian’s Alumnae Board. Once
formalized, each Board member was assigned to a specific alum event, which they are
able to take more ownership over, as well as recruit their own committees of alumnae
volunteers. One of the new events that the Board helped oversee, was at this year’s Field
Day. For the first time, Alumnae were greeted with a welcome tent, pictures and costumes
from prior Field Days, and given free admission to the event and breakfast. Nancy also
recruited city captains to host out-of-town alum gatherings across the nation. There are
now 10 cities with an “Out of Town Marian Alumnae Group.” (It was fun for me personally
to connect with Alums at the Chicago and Seattle kick-off events, so I know how much fun
these groups are going to continue to have!) A new mentorship pilot program , “Mpower,”
was also launched and paired up 16 now-senior students with alums in their preferred
career field. All of these new activities provide alumnae meaningful ways to engage in
Marian today and we are thrilled to see so many familiar faces back within our doors.
The final piece, which is the most exciting for me personally, is that Marian has broken
ground on the Mary Joy and Tal Anderson Performing Arts Center. What has been years
in the making will be ready in 14 short months for the young women of Marian to begin
utilizing during the 2013-2014 school year. It is only through the generosity of hundreds of
Marian supporters and the work of the campaign cabinet that this dream has been turned
into a reality. However, our efforts to raise the remaining funds needed to close the Spotlight
on Our Future campaign have not stopped. Marian recently rolled out new recognition
opportunities with a sponsor a seat program and commemorative stars, so please see the
enclosed article to learn more about these opportunities to take your place in the Spotlight!
Blessings,
Saints of Our Giving Circles
On Thursday, March 22, Marian held a
dedication and blessing of the newly installed
“Saints of Our Giving Circles” recognition
wall. Fr. Kevin Schneider, SJ, presided with a
prayer and special blessing. This project began
years prior, with a desire to recognize Marian’s
supporters in a way that directly relates to the
mission and charism of the Servants of Mary,
Marian’s founding order.
Giving Circles were established and named
in honor of eight female saints that embody
different aspects of Marian’s mission. The
saints are: St. Juliana Falconieri, St. Teresa of
Avila, St. Frances Xavier Cabrini, St. Katharine
Drexel, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, St. Brigid of
Ireland, Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha, and St.
Therese of Lisieux. Portraits of each saint were
painted by Maureen Pope Beat ‘80 and Barb gehringer ‘82 completed the framing.
Just as Marian empowers girls to succeed as confident, independent, thinking leaders, the women
of Marian’s Giving Circles are examples of leadership in their own right. These eight women of the
Church devoted their lives to their faith, the betterment of their communities and improving the lives
of others. Marian is humbled by their example and is proud to have so many generous benefactors who
mirror their missions and visions for the future. The Giving Circles continue to play an important role
for recognition and stewardship for Marian’s annual giving program, The Marian Fund. You can read
more about each saint under the Advancement tab at www.marianhighschool.net.
MarianFEST 2012
Bonjour! Imagine enjoying incredible Parisian patisseries
or strolling by the beautiful Seine River. On Saturday,
October 13, 2012, during “Passport to Paris – a Journey in
the Servite Tradition,” Marian will transport guests to the
“City of Lights” right here in Omaha!
The 31st Annual MarianFEST will be a soiree magnifique
complete with great food, an amazing auction, and the
pièce de résistance entertainment by both the Select
Women’s Chamber Choir and the Marian High School
mime troupe.
Marian’s founding order, the Servants of Mary, is richly
rooted in French history, and emanates from outside of
Paris in Cuves, France. Their vision of educating with a compassionate presence in the spirit of Mary
is still present in the halls of Marian and in the lives of the young women the school helps develop to
their full potential. To learn how you can help make this event a success through volunteering, please
courses, extra curricular programs and performances provide unique opportunities for
students as they journey to discover their talents, find their voice and prepare for a future
as confident, independent, thinking leaders. Recognizing the school’s rich and vibrant
history in the arts, Marian has remained committed to preparing its students as they
continue to excel in the arts.
To address the needs of the fine and performing arts courses, Marian launched into a
major capital campaign in 2005, titled Spotlight on Our Future. To date, Marian has raised
over $9,600,000 towards the campaign. There were four distinct campaign goals set at the
inception, three of which have already been fully funded and completed. The first goal
included funding the cost of updating the heating system, adding central air conditioning
and replacing all windows and the roof. These upgrades have significantly enhanced the
school’s energy efficiency. Secondly, Marian added a new road on the campus to improve
traffic flow and provided additional parking for students and visitors. A new service
building was constructed to house maintenance equipment. The enhancements have
made a spectacular difference to the buildings and grounds. The third component of the
capital campaign was an increase to the endowment, which supports Marian’s tuition
assistance efforts.
The Final act
The final component of the campaign was an exciting new facility to Marian’s campus.
The Mary Joy and Tal Anderson Performing Arts Center is a 20,000 square-foot addition
which will seat 400, feature a 40 foot proscenium, and provide a much-needed fly space,
dance studio, instrumental music room, dressing rooms and a loading dock. A control
booth for lighting, sound and video will give students hands-on technical experience.
Providing for all the spatial and functional requirements of classes, rehearsals, individual
instruction and performances, the facility will serve the needs of drama, vocal,
instrumental and dance students. It will offer a display area to showcase the impressive
artwork Marian students create. A Performing Arts Center on Marian’s campus will
also provide the perfect environment for the many guest speakers, class assemblies and
honors ceremonies that Marian hosts. The entire student body, Marian community and
Omaha community will benefit from this facility.
Each Friday, the students, teachers and staff of Marian offer a special prayer for those who are suffering from any
kind of pain, illness, or loss and for those who have asked us to pray for them. We pray for those Marian alums and
members of their families and ours who have died and now experience the joy of resurrection. Following this we
say together the Memorarae. You may join us in spirit each Friday at 8 a.m. and you will know the power of praying
