The Newbies Dodging rain, fog, and generally bad weather, the Annual New Member BBQ on November 13th came off without a hitch—thanks to Paul Fasching’s meticulous planning. The Eat and Greet extravaganza began early Sunday morning when Ken and Brenda Taylor (both long time PCA/CCCR members) and crew rolled up to the parking lot in front of the garages of Jim Collins and Milt Worthy. Collins and Worthy opened their garages to show off their cars: Jim Collins’ displaying his recently completed 1947 Pontiac Woody— the result of years of labor, patience and mon$y. Joe Korpiel, CCCR Board member for 2012, brought his 2002 GT2 “Flag” Porsche for everyone to ogle. Also at the BBQ was a 1977 Porsche Targa in the process of being converted to an all-electric car by the CalPoly Automotive Club. Only a few years old, the Club already has several local sponsors, a donated Porsche, and a work in progress. The enthusiasm and talent of these young engineers and entrepreneurs was infectious. Again, much thanks to Paul Fasching and the other CCCR members for their efforts in bringing off a splendid Porsche day to celebrate a very successful year for the CCCR Club and to welcome all the new members of 2011. Finally a very special thanks to our hosts, Rick Johnston and his wife Mike, for allowing us to use Unit C for our dining hall. This is the second year that Rick has graciously offered us the use of his garage and parking facilities. SLO356 “Club” Rides Again “Outlined against a crisp November day the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse road again—their names were…” –that’s the wrong opening. Let’s try again. On an absolutely splendiferous day, the SLO356 assembly—the term “club” is too formal for this group—took to the highways and byways of San Luis Obispo county for a ride in our own, special Deer Park—the coast roads, the coast mountains, and the north county wine country. Ostensibly it was the annual ride for Porsche 356’s, but Are we there yet? as understated by the non-rules of the anti-club, and as vaguely unarticulated by Hamp Miller and Ed Swain, any car was welcome—so long as you pretended it was a 356. (If you weren’t driving a 356, you were requested to make sputtering, air-cooled, 4 cylinder noises every few miles or so.) Among the SLO356 vehicles present, there were actually several Porsche 356s! California Central Coast Porsche Club Of America January 2012 By Milt Worthy The whole farrago of cars, drivers, and kibitzers (i.e., passengers) gathered at Scotty’s Café in Pismo Beach on a November Saturday morning. The route for our lunch destination was handed out, and the mass of motely motors was off in a cloud of oily smoke and grim determination. The group was led by Hamp Miller in his Pregnant Canary, closely followed by Craig Smith’s 356/911 and the rest of the SLO scuderia. After a tour of scenic south San Luis Obispo, the Porsches, and lesser autos, found themselves on Los Osos Valley and Turri Roads, heading for Highway 1, then over Old Creek Road near Cayucos to Highway 46. After that it was Norman Rockwell-like North-West County Wine country roads all the way to McPhee’s in Templeton. In spite of their other short-comings (actually, Hamp and Ed are of average height) our fearless leaders had picked one of best collation of roads in the world on which to drive a Porsche. A special driver’s menu had been prepared for the hungry piloti by McPhee’s that featured Kobe Beef burgers and a selection of exotic salads. On that coruscating November day no one went home hungry—neither in body, soul, nor spirit. The drive, the weather, the cars, the food, and best of all, the company of friends, constituted the perfect prelude to the Holidays. Vector drawing by Andrew Meehan 13
