Prez’s Corner
Bruce Bero, President
First of all, allow me to wish all CCCR members and their
families a safe, prosperous, and Happy New Year!
The Christmas party, held at the San Luis Obispo Country
Club, was well timed to kick off the holiday season. The
decorations, food, and door prizes were exceptional. A
special thanks goes to Sanja Brewer and Marla Hill for
all their hard work and for producing splendid, enjoyable
evening.
As you read this message the new Board will have had its
first meeting and put into motion another year of activities
aimed at continued Porsche owners fellowship. With three
new Board members, and a shuffling of office duties, I’m
sure we can expect some fresh and creative activities for
2012.
The tried and true “Pozo Run” will start off the 2012 event
calendar on January 22nd , with the “Parkfield Run” to follow
on February 26th . To all our new members: These two events
have always been club favorites, so make sure you sign up
with Dave Mills no later than January 15th for the Pozo drive
and brunch. More detailed information on these two events
are given in this issue of your Coastalaire and on the club
web site.
Speaking of the website, Eriel Nash has agreed to continue
as CCCR Webmaster. I’m sure that you will agree that Eriel
produces an outstanding site month after month. Many of
the features in the printed version of the Coastalaire are
expanded in our Web version.
On behalf of the entire Board and members of the CCC
Region I would like to offer special thanks to Hamp Miller
for taking the helm last year. Hamp is a take charge person
which was evidenced by his leadership in revising the Club
By-Laws and bringing them up to date.
I promised our Coastalaire editor, Bob Kitamura, that I
would keep my messages short. I am looking forward to a
great Porsche new year. Be safe.
Jim and Roberta Major make it into Panorama
Editor’s Exhaust
Bob “Kit” Kitamura, Editor
Well, can you believe it? Its 2012, where did 2011 go? I am
looking forward to a great and fun new year, of course that is
easy for me to say since I am now well into retirement. We
have a great new board of directors with a mixture of new
faces and continuing ones. They are ready to serve you with
some exciting events in 2012.
Linda Goodman, the Contributing Editor for Panorama,
included our Drive to the Castle in the December issue. You
can read about it on pages 60-62 of that issue. Of the many
photos that I had sent them, they used the one of Jim and
Roberta Major. You can see it below.
The Coastalaire staff is always looking for additional human
interest stories having to do with your Porsche, whether
its family-related, traveling, racing, technical items, your
search for the perfect car, etc. The membership likes to hear
about what all of us are doing. So send me your stories at
anytime of the year.
The question of the year is, which one of you will be buying
the new 2012 991 (911) first? Of course, I wish it was going
to be me but the chances of that purchase order happening is
slim and none. When you do get one this year, and will admit
it, shoot me an email.
Rick Becker, the Porsche Club of America 912 & 912E
Register Advocate, is looking for 912/912E enthusiasts in the
California Central Coast Region to let them know about the
new pages, accessible by smartphone app and internet. For
news from PCA regions, factory news, videos, and various
information articles that you can receive via internet and
smartphone app, they now have a 912 & 912E Register
page on Facebook. To access it log-in to your FB account,
then view it at: http://www.facebook.com/pages/912-912E-
Register-Porsche-Club-of-America/259276414106874.
Previous owners are very welcome too; many current
owners are interested to learn the early history of their car
from the original owner. You can contact him by replying to
Rick Becker at engrbecker@gmail.com.
In closing, I don’t know how many of you knew this but
Steve Jobs never had permanent license plates for his
Mercedes AMG. In California, you are allowed to not have
permanent plates on your car for up to 6 months after you
purchase it. So the genius that he was, he just leased a new
Mercedes every 6 months, it also helped that he was filthy
rich! He was also eccentric but aren’t we all, since we do
own a Porsche.
The Activities Chair Speaks
Dave Mills, Ex-Activities Chair
LAST WORD FROM THE CURRENT (BUT SOON TO
BE EX-) ACTIVITIES CHAIR
The countdown to my demise stands at sixteen days as of
this writing, and will be over by the time you get to read it.
The reins will have been handed over to Bob DeVries, who
will begin his reign (or take over the reins--maybe even in
the rain [aren’t you glad you won’t have to read this stuff any
more?]) by cleverly creating an April ‘12 event. Why is he
waiting ‘till April, you ask? Well, as I have pointed out in
previous columns, the year’s duties for the Activities Chair
involve setting up activities for the first three months of each
following year. You have probably already discovered that
said three months for 2012 have been set: Pozo in January,
Parkfield in February, and Lynn Ayers’ rally school, springing
forward precisely on the date we all get up at 2:00 AM to
change our clocks. The announcement of that event can be
found on Page __ of this issue.
Speaking of Pozo, reservations (and checks) are coming in
already--slowly, but coming in. Don’t forget to get your
reservations in not later than January 15th (still listening,
Craig?). Checks, too (though real money will be accepted).
Remember last year at Pozo--warm weather, sunshine,
outdoor seating? Don’t bet on it this year. The local
weatherpersons are not guaranteeing anything (yet), but,
in years past, we’ve made the Pozo run in the foulest of
weather, including a flooded parking lot, and still had a 60+
turnout. Remember--even Porsches have been known to run
in the rain (snow?)! By the way, congratulations are due
to Dave and Ellen Ferguson, whose first-of-the-bunch check
came in the day after last month’s announcement! I have
decided that they deserve a prize for that; I therefore decree
that they will NOT be required to keep their Linne Road
facility open all day as a checkpoint for a rallye (and potty
break) this year!
So--what am I going to do this year? Hm--you don’t think for
one moment that I’d abandon the board, do you? Meetings
are ‘way too much fun; and the food’s great! Check the
board page in this issue.
January Member Profile
Joe
Korpiel
by Milt Worthy
The CCCR
Board for
2012 has three
new members:
Joe Korpiel, Andy
Winterbottom,
and Key Finney.
Joe Korpiel joins
returning Board
Member Jon
Milledge and new
member Andy
Winterbottom as
part of the club’s
competitive track
racing contingent.
Together, these
three hot shoes
Joe Korpiel at Laguna Seca have over 100
years of competition
experience. In this first Coastalaire of 2012 we
feature Joe Korpiel, his Porsches, and his Porsche racing
career.
Joe became a serious, competitive driver when he
bought a race prepared 356 Super 90 in the early
1960’s; later, he moved to faster cars, driving racing versions
of the Porsche 914-6 and 911’s. In the late 1970’s
he retired from racing after witnessing crashes that resulted
in several deaths of his racing colleagues. Thirtyfive
years later Joe has taken up racing again in a serious
way. In 2009 he obtained his NASA racing license and
he is driving fast cars again. This time piloting 911 GT
Spec cars for TRG racing at age 75. Joe’s story begins in
Europe just before the outbreak of WWII.
California Central Coast Porsche Club Of America January 2012
Joseph Korpiel was born in Belgium in 1936. On
May 10, 1940 the Germans invaded Belgium for the
second time in twenty-five years. His family, along with
thousands of others, desperately scrambled to find ways
to escape the chaos of their occupied country. Shocked
at the rapidity with which the German army was overrunning
Western Europe, the 16 members of his immediate
family split up into smaller groups and made their
separate ways to neutral countries and to the south of
France. For five years, the Korpiels avoided capture and
waited for liberation. That day came in June of 1944;
Germany surrendered in 1945 and soon after, the pieces
of the Korpiel family were re-united in Belgium. Almost
immediately Mr. Korpiel, Senior, (who didn’t want to
wait for another army to march through the Belgium
forests) began his quest for visas and permits in order
to emigrate from Europe. After five years of visits to
bureaus and officials they got the precious papers and
joined relatives in New York City.
In the Big Apple, Joe grew up, learned the language,
and quickly became an American teenager. In the
1950’s that was cars, girls, and gangs. But war again
interrupted Joe’s young life. The invasion of South
Korea meant that girls and cars had to wait: in 1953 Joe
joined the US Army for a three year hitch; he served in
Korea with an engineering battalion. A few years later
the Korpiels moved even further west and settled in the
San Francisco bay area. Joe graduated from San Mateo
College, then went on to San Francisco State University
where he studied Pre-law. He changed to a business
356 Super 90 and tow vehicle, Portland, 1963
10
major and that has proven to be a good choice. In 1961
he married his life long partner: Joe and Marilyn recently
celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. With
his brand new wife, and school and military service
behind him, Joe began to earn a living. On weekends,
Joe also began racing sports cars in a serious fashion;
wife Marilyn supported him in every way, including
helping change tires. Big block American cars were the
first choice for racing, especially Corvettes. But Joe
soon discovered Porsche. Even though they were underpowered
and expensive, they were winning races all over
the world.
The car that changed his life was a 1961 356 Super
90, modified for racing. In racing form the little
Porsche was capable of generating 125+ horsepower
and became a giant killer in Joe’s aggressive and skillful
hands. He enlisted a team of Porsche racing master mechanics
and his car became almost unbeatable. He won
races from Washington state to Florida, and on almost
every well known track. In one memorable race he was
driving his Super 90 against a field of Corvettes at races
in Kent, Washington. He was trailing the big V-8’s
when it started to rain hard. The ‘vettes with big horsepower
and wide, slick tires were no match for the agile
356 and its 4 inch treaded tires. Joe passed the lead
Corvette near the end of the race and won going away.
The Corvette driver was Johnny Grant, who went on
the win the Indy 500 two years later. Joe still cherishes
the memory of gliding pass the powerful, but ineffective
wet giant in his snug, road-hugging Porsche.
The Porsche that he had the most success with, and
the car that he said was the best handling and most
fun to drive, was a 1970 914-6, modified for racing.
(He liked his race 914-6 so much, he bought a second
stock 914-6 as his daily driver.) Joe won many races in
his white 914-6 and he drove it in events such as the
LA Times Grand Prix, Trans-Am, IMSA, and SCCA
races at tracks around the USA. At one time Joe was
West Coast B Class SCAA Champion three years in a
row in his 914-6 Porsche. Joe has owned a couple dozen
Porsches for street driving, including 911’s, Boxsters,
and a 930.
California Central Coast Porsche Club Of America January 2012
Today Joe drives a 2002 GT2 “Flag” 911. The GT2
can often be seen around Cambria where he and
Marilyn live today. They moved into their new dream
house, on the water, a few years ago. The house is a masterpiece
of craftsmanship and reflects Joe’s passion for
excellence. Joe and Marilyn share their home with some
spooky Egyptian cats, their GT2 Porsche, and visits
from their daughters, Stephanie and Rachel.
From the boy who played with live ammunition
washed up on the beaches of Belgium to the man
today who gazes out over the Pacific Ocean, it’s been
more than an incredible journey; it’s been a life for our
times.
Postscript: Stephanie and Rachel-- ask your father
to tell you how he blew the windows out of several
blocks of apartments and hotels with shore-strewn ordinance
in 1945.
Dodging rain, fog, and generally bad weather, the Annual New Member BBQ on November 13th came off without a hitch—thanks
to Paul Fasching’s meticulous planning. The Eat and Greet extravaganza began early Sunday morning when Ken and Brenda Taylor
(both long time PCA/CCCR members) and crew rolled up to the parking lot in front of the garages of Jim Collins and Milt Worthy.
Collins and Worthy opened their garages to show off their cars: Jim Collins’ displaying his recently completed 1947 Pontiac
Woody— the result of years of labor, patience and mon$y. Joe Korpiel, CCCR Board member for 2012, brought his 2002 GT2
“Flag” Porsche for everyone to ogle. Also at the BBQ was a 1977 Porsche Targa in the process of being converted to an all-electric
car by the CalPoly Automotive Club. Only a few years old, the Club already has several local sponsors, a donated Porsche, and
a work in progress. The enthusiasm and talent of these young engineers and entrepreneurs was infectious. Again, much thanks to
Paul Fasching and the other CCCR members for their efforts in bringing off a splendid Porsche day to celebrate a very successful
year for the CCCR Club and to welcome all the new members of 2011. Finally a very special thanks to our hosts, Rick Johnston
and his wife Mike, for allowing us to use Unit C for our dining hall. This is the second year that Rick has graciously offered us the
use of his garage and parking facilities.
SLO356 “Club” Rides Again
“Outlined against a crisp November day the Four
Horsemen of the Apocalypse road again—their names
were…” –that’s the wrong opening. Let’s try again.
On an absolutely
splendiferous
day, the SLO356
assembly—the
term “club” is too
formal for this
group—took to
the highways and
byways of San Luis
Obispo county
for a ride in our
own, special Deer
Park—the coast
roads, the coast
mountains, and
the north county
wine country.
Ostensibly it was
the annual ride for
Porsche 356’s, but
Are we there yet?
as understated by
the non-rules of
the anti-club, and as vaguely unarticulated by Hamp
Miller and Ed Swain, any car was welcome—so long
as you pretended it was a 356. (If you weren’t driving a
356, you were requested to make sputtering, air-cooled,
4 cylinder noises every few miles or so.) Among the
SLO356 vehicles present, there were actually several
Porsche 356s!
California Central Coast Porsche Club Of America January 2012
By Milt Worthy
The whole farrago of cars, drivers, and kibitzers (i.e.,
passengers) gathered at Scotty’s Café in Pismo
Beach on a November Saturday morning. The route
for our lunch destination was handed out, and the
mass of motely motors was off in a cloud of oily smoke
and grim determination. The group was led by Hamp
Miller in his Pregnant Canary, closely followed by Craig
Smith’s 356/911 and the rest of the SLO scuderia. After
a tour of scenic south San Luis Obispo, the Porsches,
and lesser autos, found themselves on Los Osos Valley
and Turri Roads, heading for Highway 1, then over
Old Creek Road near Cayucos to Highway 46. After
that it was Norman Rockwell-like North-West County
Wine country roads all the way to McPhee’s in Templeton.
In spite of their other short-comings (actually,
Hamp and Ed are of average height) our fearless leaders
had picked one of best collation of roads in the world
on which to drive a Porsche. A special driver’s menu
had been prepared for the hungry piloti by McPhee’s
that featured Kobe Beef burgers and a selection of exotic
salads.
On that coruscating November day no one went
home hungry—neither in body, soul, nor spirit.
The drive, the weather, the cars, the food, and best of
all, the company of friends, constituted the perfect
prelude to the Holidays.
PORSCHE TECH
In this era of eco-friendliness where everyone wants to be
green and help preserve and protect the planet, sometimes
it seems that we can’t. I mean, how can you remove years
and years of road grime on a Porsche’s engine, tranny,
and under carriage without using harsh chemicals such as
degreasers, solvents, abrasives, acids, etc., etc.?
Well, I just ran into the coolest and most eco-friendliest way
of doing this. I went to visit a friend, who is the owner a
local Porsche Shop in the area, and when I got there I saw
something that made my heart skip a beat or two. They had
a Carrera GT (yes, the $400,000 supercar from Porsche) on
a lift and I could have sworn that they were sandblasting the
$20,000 CCCB (Carbon Ceramic Composite Brakes) rotors
and calipers. I thought my friend had just lost it! I quickly ran
over to stop the madness, but as I got closer, I saw that what
was coming out of the nozzle wasn’t sand, but what looked
like water vapor. “Cool”, I said to the owner, “using steam to
clean the car?” “Nope”, he said, “that’s not steam, it’s CO 2 “
(carbon dioxide).
INSERT: CGT-PCCB.jpg HERE
I was immediately intrigued and started asking questions:
“So, what is it and how does it work?”, “How do you generate
CO 2 under pressure?”, “Will it peel off the caliper’s paint?”,
“What other chemicals do you add to the CO 2 in order to
clean?”, and a bunch of other ones.
He stopped what he was doing and started to explain:
“This is called Cryo Detailing and we’re the first ones in the
South East to apply the technology to automotive use. It has
a very powerful, specially designed air compressor to blast
away oil, grease, and stuck-on grime using only CO 2 ”.
“It is safe on paint, soft rubber, decals, etc.” and he then
showed me how safe it was by blasting the beautiful,
Carrera Silver, left fender on the Carrera GT with his nozzle.
I carefully inspected it, and it was perfect!
“We do not add anything else. It’s just pressurized air and
CO 2 “. “Come with me, let me show you what’s inside the
machine”. I followed him and we went to a giant blue plastic
bin which as he opened it I could see that it was full of what
looked like steaming rice. It was obviously rice-like CO 2
pellets.
INSERT: BlueBin.jpg HERE-INSERT: FillingUnit.jpg HERE-
INSERT: Pellets.jpg HERE
Blue Bin
As they were reloading the unit again with the pellets I took a
handful (which almost burnt my hand from the intense cold)
to photograph them, next to a penny to give you an idea of
their size.
INSERT: Pellets.jpg HERE
Pellets
Filling Unit
“The machine is fairly simple”, he said, “it’s a big air
compressor which generates very dry, pressurized air, then
uses the pressure and a venturi to add the CO 2 pellets to the
stream of compressed air through a hose. Before it reaches
the end, we install the correct size-for-the-task mesh and
nozzle for the particular job we’re doing”.
“So, depending on the air pressure, on the dry-ice particle
size and on the nozzle’s diameter and length, we can do
such delicate work as clean the white thread’s stitching on a
leather seat or we can strip off paint.”
“Why dry ice?” I asked.
He answered: “The cold temperature, which can be brought
down to 111〬F below zero basically deep-freezes the grime
which is then blasted away by the air pressure and the small
dry ice pellets. That’s why there’s no residue other than the
dirt we’ve just removed.”
14
“So did you guys invent this or what?”
“No”, he said, “this technology is actually used by Porsche
and its dealers in Germany, as a standard service. We’re
just the first in the area to offer this service.”
When I got back to my office I went online to check and I
found this on Porsche’s European Website:
INSERT: PorscheService.jpg HERE
But, the skeptic that I am I said: “well, this is nice and dandy
on a concour-ready Carrera GT, but does it really work on
old, baked-in crud as that on my 14 year-old, 214,000 mile
Boxster? ; ) He said, “bring it in tomorrow and I’ll show you.”
The next day I was there bright and early with my old girl.
First I took a couple of “before” pictures to have something
to compare. Now, you be the judge:
But maybe what impressed me the most was how delicately
the Cryo Detail takes off the grime but leaves the part
completely undisturbed.
Take a look at this aluminum suspension part which was
scribed at the factory. You can see how well it cleaned, yet
you can still see that the original aluminum surface was not
altered (sandblasted) in any way.
INSERT: Scribe.jpg HERE
This is really interesting technology, in particular for engine
builders, car restorers and Councour d’Elegance enthusiasts
or just anyone who wants their Porsche as clean as possible,
even in places that no one ever sees. And the best part – it’s
eco-friendly!
If Cryo Detail is not in your area, wait for it, or better yet ask
for it.
2011 LA Auto Show
By Bob Kitamura
Well I know that many of us took the usual annual trek down to Los
Angeles for the LA Auto Show. It is usually a pretty spectacular
event with many car manufacturers trying to outdo each other with
their displays and cars. Not so in 2011, even the Porsche display
could not hold me for longer than a few minutes. The year before
I was there for at least an hour. For me and IMHO, the Jaguar
XKR-S Coupe was the car that turned heads at the show and was
the best looking.
However, the highlight of the show for me was coming upon the
San Luis Obispo Saturday Farmer’s Market display in the Ford
section of the show. I was able to speak to some representatives
from Bautista Farms in Arroyo Grande, one of over 70 local
farmers that make up the Farmer’s Market. Seeing them at the
show made my trip well worth it.
