The soyle of al Ventel<strong>and</strong> is of a darke reddische yerth ful of slaty stones, <strong>and</strong> other<br />

greater of the same color. The countery is also sumwhat montayneus, <strong>and</strong> welle replenishid<br />

with woodes, also very fertyle of corne, but men there study more to pastures the which be<br />

wel <strong>in</strong>closed.<br />

MYDDLE VENTELAND.<br />

Sum say that Cair Lion should be <strong>in</strong> Base Ventel<strong>and</strong>, sum say nay. The Welschemen say<br />

that Cair Lion is but viii. myles from Chepstow, but <strong>in</strong> deade it may be counted xii. Englisch<br />

myles. It stondeth magnificently on the farther side of Wische, 232 one of the pr<strong>in</strong>cipal ryvers<br />

of South-<strong>Wales</strong>. So that very great shyppes might wel cum now to the town, as they did <strong>in</strong> the<br />

Romaynes tyme, but that Newport Bridge is a lette. Nevertheles bygge botes cummeth to the<br />

towne. The ru<strong>in</strong>es of the walles of the town yet remayne, <strong>and</strong> also of the castel.<br />

Ther is op<strong>in</strong>ion that the olde Roma<strong>in</strong>e chirche was abowt Mr. ... house, where I lay.<br />

There <strong>in</strong> digg<strong>in</strong>g apperid certen pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>ges on stonis.<br />

There were fownde a late by the castel cert eyne pa<strong>in</strong>tid <strong>in</strong>crustamentes hard by the castel.<br />

In the towne is now but one paroche chirche, <strong>and</strong> that is of S. Cadocus.<br />

Sum wold that Cairuske, otherwise caullid Brenbygey, 233 should be the pr<strong>in</strong>cipal place of<br />

Mydle Ventel<strong>and</strong>. The castel ther hath bene great , stronge <strong>and</strong> fair. The town by semeth not to<br />

[have] bene of any renown. Ther was a late an abbay [of] nunnes. Cairusk st<strong>and</strong>eth on the<br />

farther side of Uske .... myles from Cair Lion.<br />

Monmouthshire.<br />

Newport is <strong>in</strong> Wentlugh 235 a myle <strong>and</strong> more by foote path from Cairlion, <strong>and</strong> st<strong>and</strong>eth on<br />

Uske, havyng a prety stronge town; but I marked not whyther yt were waulled or no. There is<br />

a very fair castel longg<strong>in</strong>g sumtyme to the Bukk<strong>in</strong>ghams. But this great lordship, as the<br />

Walsch-men say, ys no part of the iii. Vencel<strong>and</strong>es, yet it is cawlled <strong>in</strong> Walsch Guentluge. 236<br />

Wherfore yt might <strong>in</strong> description be welle yo<strong>in</strong>ed with Myddle Ventel<strong>and</strong>. The lordship of<br />

Newport be likelyhod should strech to the ryyer of Remny, 237 limes Morganiae.<br />

At Goldclif a iii. myles from Newport on the Severn shore was a priory of monkes of the<br />

French ordre, suppressed, <strong>and</strong> the l<strong>and</strong>es given to Eton College.<br />

The hole lordship of Abregeveney maketh the cumpace of Hye Ventel<strong>and</strong>.<br />

Abergeveney yt self is a faire waulled town, meately welle <strong>in</strong>habited havyng .... paroch<br />

chirch. Ther is a fair castel. The lord of Burgeveney ys one of the auncyentest barons of the<br />

Munmouth town ys waulled, <strong>and</strong> st<strong>and</strong>eth yn the diocese of Herford as betwyxt ii. ryvers,<br />

Wy <strong>and</strong> Mone, of the which yt taketh name. Of thes ii. ryvers Wy to us st<strong>and</strong>eth lower, <strong>and</strong><br />

Mone 241 hyer. Muro c<strong>in</strong>gitur ea parte qua flum<strong>in</strong>ibus non defenditur, hoc est a parte<br />

aquilonari, id est a porta /46/ monachia, et orientali usque ad ipsam fere ripam<br />

T<strong>in</strong>tern coenobium Barnard<strong>in</strong>orum <strong>in</strong> ulteriori ripa Vagae quique passuum millibus<br />

distans a Mona.<br />

The rokkes <strong>in</strong> North-<strong>Wales</strong> cawlled Venetia 242 beyng very hy, bare, <strong>and</strong> white, may<br />

properly be caulled <strong>in</strong> Lat<strong>in</strong>e Alpes Venetae.<br />

Monmouthshire.<br />

The water of Severne compaseth more then one half of Guentel<strong>and</strong>.<br />

Wye also a very great <strong>and</strong> famose river passeth thorough Ventl<strong>and</strong>, <strong>and</strong> at S.<br />
