M E S S A G E
With trading conditions across a multitude of industry sectors being
rather challenging at this time, we are very excited to be introducing a
whole new range of bizhub multi-functional devices to the market within
the next few months.
These new bizhubs are the most powerful that we have ever had – in
fact, internally we’re referring to them as the ‘super bizhubs’ and rightly
so, as the advent of these new devices heralds exciting new value
propositions that we’re able to offer our customers and the market at
large.
This new range is unparalleled in its technological capacity, offering
industry-first innovations in reliability, ease of use and convenience,
device management, environmental sustainability and a whole host of
scanning and connectivity attributes that facilitate the growing need for
mobility and collaboration within business today. Evidence of this is our
unprecedented third successive ‘MFP Line-up of the Year’ award from
the world’s leading independent consumer guide, Buyers Laboratory
LLC (BLI).
Konica Minolta South Africa undoubtedly offers the market’s best price/
performance ratio and is streaks ahead of competitors on the
technology curve. In fact, we’re confident that no one else offers more
in terms of improving profitability and enhancing productivity within an
organisation than, Konica Minolta and bizhub.
So, look out for the new bizhub storm, coming soon to the marketplace!
Kind regards,
Alan Griffith
Better than the best, the new bizhub C224,
bizhub C284 and bizhub C364
>>>
Konica Minolta South Africa’s
bizhub C224, C284 and C364
are the successors to the
BLI Pick of the Year 2009 award
winners bizhub C220, C280 and
C360. Together these three new
multifunctional devices (MFDs)
fulfil the requirements for a wide
variety of tasks and are aimed at
small and medium sized
businesses as well as workgroups
in larger businesses.
Konica Minolta’s Info-Palette design highly improves the
overall usability of the bizhub C224, C284 and C364.
Important operations like copying, printing, scanning
and faxing are all accessed in the same way through the
system’s nine-inch colour multitouch panel, which works as
effortlessly as in most high-end smartphones or tablet PCs. All
three multifunctionals also have an identical Graphical User
Interface (GUI) for printer panel and PC printer driver – based
on the ‘know one, operate all’ concept. This concept also
applies to other Konica Minolta multifunctionals such as the
bizhub C654 and C754. Optional individualisation of the MFP
panel and printer driver menus (MyTab) makes the new
systems highly flexible.
The new bizhub devices feature either Reversing Automatic
Document Feeder (RADF) for everyday office tasks like
regular scanning and copying or Dualscan ADF, which can
scan both sides of a document in only one operation. Dualscan
ADF is the perfect choice for tasks that require a high scan
performance, such as document archiving. Scanning speeds
are 80 images per minute (ipm) with RADF and 160 ipm with
a Dualscan feature. For copying and printing, the speeds the
individual new machines offer are 22 (C224), 28 (C284) or 36
(C364) pages in full colour or monochrome prints per minute
(ppm).
bizhub C224
- Superb print quality
- Enhanced integration and
customisational capabilities
- Professional media flexibility

izhub C284
- Superb print quality at 1200 x 1200dpi
- Microsoft Office USB printing
- High-end finishing options
The entire series is characterised by green technology for
lower power consumption and less environmental impact. Able
to scan without engine warm-up, the bizhub C224, C284 and
C364 save both time and money. Konica Minolta’s next
generation of Simitri HD polymerised toner reduces the fusing
temperature furthermore – improving print media compatibility
and also reducing power consumption. New features like the
dynamic eco timer, which analyses working conditions and
automatically adjusts sleep mode and ready timings, contribute
especially to the ecological and economical performance of the
devices.
According to Andrew Griffith, product manager at
Konica Minolta South Africa, to produce a series that could out
perform the bizhub C220, C280 and C360 was not an easy
task. Those three devices have been the most successful in
the Konica Minolta colour MFP portfolio. With the new level of
overall usability provided in response to our customers’
demands and with the latest technologies, we are sure we can
convince a great many decision makers to choose the
successor models.
bizhub C364
- Saves time and money
- Capacitive multi-touch interface
- High-end finishing options
Copying, printing, scanning
and faxing are all accessed
effortlessly through the nine inch
colour multitouch panel.
>>> Konica Minolta South Africa has yet
again launched a team of two new colour
capable multifunctional peripherals.
With them, the company has now
completed the upgrade of its colour office
printing line up: the new multifunctionals
bizhub C454 and bizhub C554
complement the just recently released
multifunctionals bizhub C224, C284
and C364. Larger workgroups and
departments are the environments where
the bizhub C454 and C554 will be most
welcomed due to their ease of use, their
low power consumption and other green
technologies as well as their advanced
scanning capabilities, large paper capacity
and wide range of finishing options.
Konica Minolta South Africa’s
new colour spectrum
Konica Minolta South Africa now has the right colour
multifunctional device (MFD) for every customer’s need,
from 22 up to 60 colour pages per minute (ppm). The
two new devices, the bizhub C454 and bizhub C554 cover the
mid-range of the line up. They are positioned between the
bizhub MFPs C224, C284 and C364 for small and medium
sized businesses as well as workgroups in larger businesses
and the bizhub C654 and C754 that satisfy the needs of large
departments, centralised office locations and Central
Reprographic Departments (CRDs).
Industry’s first capable
Internal Web Service (IWS)
software development kit to not
only customise a connection or
design for the user interface, but
also distinct functions.
The MFPs bizhub C454 and C554 offer colour and black &
white printing speeds of 45 ppm (C454) and 55 ppm (C554)
respectively. Both new multifunctionals feature an easy to use,
nine-inch colour multitouch panel, which works as effortlessly
as in most high-end smartphones or tablet PCs. Elective
individualisation options for the MFP panel and the
printer driver menus make the new systems highly flexible.
Konica Minolta’s Info-Palette design further improves the
overall usability. Important operations like copying, printing,
scanning and faxing are all accessed in the same intuitive way.

The entire series is characterised by green technology for
lower power consumption and less environmental impact,
leading to a more ecological footprint and reducing the Total
Cost of Ownership (TCO). For example, the bizhub C454 and
bizhub C554 are able to scan without engine warm-up and
therefore reduce energy consumption. Another power saver is
Konica Minolta’s next generation of Simitri HD polymerised
toner implemented in the new bizhub systems. Features like
the dynamic eco timer, which analyses working conditions and
automatically adjusts sleep mode and ready timings, further
contribute to the ecological performance.
The bizhub C454 and C554 also offer advanced capabilities
for scanning large numbers of documents e.g. archiving tasks.
Therefore they are equipped with a Dualscan Automatic
Document Feeder (DADF), which can scan both sides of a
document in only one operation and thus delivers an
outstanding performance of 160 images per minute (ipm) in
full colour. Both machines can be upgraded with larger paper
sidedecks for a higher A4, A3 or SRA3 paper capacity. In
addition to the embedded finishing options and the 50 sheet
staple finisher, the bizhub C554 can be equipped with a 100
sheet stapler.
With the launch of the bizhub C454 and C554, Konica Minolta
South Africa offers the best and most complete office colour
line up we have ever had. We now cover an even broader
range of different systems with printing speeds for every
customer’s need and the possibility to print colour and
monochrome documents from a single device. This offers
superior quality and the possibility to print more economically
with competitive monochrome print costs. We also offer the
highest possible usability for our products – identical from the
smallest to the largest device.
bizhub C554
- Up to 55 colour ppm
- Colour multitouch panel
- Green technology for lower
power consumption
bizhub C454
According to Andrew Griffith,
product manager for office products
at Konica Minolta South Africa
printing and output devices
have long transcended their one
dimensional role as print, copy, fax
and scan machines. The focus is now
on moving document management
out of the back office shadows and
managing other repositories through
enterprise content management
software, like Microsoft SharePoint.
Stepping out of the box
Furthermore, issues that were pertinent over a decade
ago, such as converging printing and IT technology, have
long been conquered, placing document management
suppliers on an amazing technology curve, where printing and
output devices can be used to optimise businesses processes
by driving down business costs and improving productivity.
Our focus is not merely on supplying a commodity, but rather
on delivering the value of enhanced productivity and a
reduction of what is an operational expense to the business,
that is ultimately derived from the device’s customised
optimisation capabilities.
Businesses should thus look past the hardware and focus on
how the device can be integrated into business. In addition,
while document management is still key to cope with today’s
deluge of data, a combination of offline and online document
management can provide companies with a massive boost in
productivity.
Proof of this, is Konica Minolta South Africa’s latest
achievement in becoming the first South African business
within its sector to enable customers to integrate their digital
multifunctional devices directly into Microsoft SharePoint
collaboration software. The company’s in-house developed
app is currently in the process of being certified by Microsoft,
another industry first.

According to Griffith, for local businesses, it means that
Konica Minolta South Africa can assist not only in saving them
costs on paper and consumables, but also on time spent
managing information.
This is because by directly integrating their digital
multifunctional devices into collaboration or enterprise content
management software, like Microsoft SharePoint, scanned
documents are automatically routed and stored in the correct
place within the relevant content management system. This
saves a great amount of time spent on scanning, saving and
searching for data, as it is also immediately available when
needed.
We certainly believe that this type of innovation will gain
traction as businesses realise the potential savings that can
be made with proper integration into these environments.
He highlights ‘customisation’ as being another solid trend in
the industry. We are pleased to have the technology to offer
our clients the ability to change and adapt the look and feel of
our user interface so that it completely integrates with their
organisation’s brand and specific needs, carrying it through
from the device panel to all enterprise resource planning
systems. We have learnt that no two companies operate the
same, even if they represent the same industry.
Konica Minolta South Africa
is at the forefront of document
management. Document
management is the key to boost
productivity and save costs.
The same can be said for document management suppliers,
that is, no two are alike, and businesses should be aware that
there is a discernable difference between managed services
and managed print services. Besides sophisticated technology,
organisations should be aware that they should expect the
following from their document management supplier: a good
geographic footprint – as although the value lies beyond
hardware, the devices still require a highly skilled workforce;
and an excellent supply chain and distribution capability.
It is exciting to be at the forefront of document management
technology developments, and witnessing first-hand the
measurable boost in productivity and cost savings these
innovations bring to organisations.
Digital machines expand
commercial printers’ horizons
>>>
Digital printing is bringing an entirely new scope to the offset printing sector, matching
up to litho characteristics in terms of both colour compatibility and image quality
In terms of touch points like colour, screen rulings, screen
angles, dot shapes and Lines Per Inch (LPI), digital printing
is now being favourably compared to offset printing,
opening up an entirely new world for the commercial printer.
There are numerous benefits to the introduction of digital
printing to a traditionally offset focused operation. Proofing can
be done on a digital press in a far more cost effective way,
producing a professional proof that looks exactly like the
finished product.
Various software solutions such as impositioning solutions,
VDP and web to print, further enhance the value of a digital
print option within a traditional print environment. The ease of
use and affordability also make it an ideal solution for print
providers to be a true one-stop supplier of print material.
Furthermore, the ability to offer short run printing means that
printers can not only tap into previously unreached markets
looking for a run of under 1,000 documents, they are also able
to provide a broader service to existing clients.
Attesting to its digital printing beliefs, Konica Minolta
South Africa has printed litho jobs successfully on numerous
occasions on its digital presses. Not only do they produce their
own advertisements and business cards, they recently
delivered high quality printed material for the Childhood Cancer
Foundation South Africa (CHOC), including brochures, flyers,
posters, business cards and letterheads.
Digital printing now comparable
to offset printing
Boasting four of only 17 recipients worldwide of the prestigious
Diploma in Colour, the highest certification of Konica Minolta
Business Technologies’ professional education, the
organisation can assist in implementing both colour
management solutions and advanced printing features for
digital machines and is offering demonstrations at its Digital
Square facility in Ormonde, Johannesburg.

Konica Minolta South Africa and the
University of Johannesburg dynamically
shape the future
>>> Konica Minolta South Africa (KMSA)
has successfully provided the
University of Johannesburg (UJ) with
sophisticated print services technology
that can easily be adapted for future
ICT requirements.
The agreement between Konica Minolta South Africa and
UJ came into effect at the beginning of 2012 and included
the provision of cashless printing facilities to more than
50,000 students and setting up printing and copier technology
in bulk print rooms on all four of the UJ campuses: Auckland
Park Kingsway, Auckland Park Bunting, Doornfontein and
Soweto.
The company also replaced all existing multifunctional devices
(MFDs) in academic and support areas, as well as copying and
printing facilities in libraries and computer laboratories, which
are available to its more than 8,000 staff members, students
and visitors to the university’s campuses.
According to Professor Thea Voogt, printing facilities roll-out
project leader at UJ, KMSA has successfully provided
managed print services that are flexible, innovative and act as
an enabler to enhance the learning environment.
“KMSA both appreciated and realised our need for a vendor
partner who would not just place devices on our campuses,
but one that would also focus on the intangible side of our
academic environment, such as supporting us in being a
pre-eminent South African and African university that is a step
ahead in terms of offering technology opportunities to students,
staff and visitors, says Professor Voogt.
Due to KMSA’s innovative MFDs and software, UJ now has
the right technology embedded in its current offering to easily
access and integrate with a wide range of mobile device
platforms, such as tablets, smartphones, e-readers and mobile
applications in the future. Voogt explains that this forwardthinking
strategy was implemented to help students take better
advantage of mobile computing in the future and ‘earn on the
move’. In this way, KMSA’s technology input can also be seen
as adding value to the knowledge emanating from the
campuses.
Since the tender was awarded, the KMSA team has included
a number of additional functionalities that the university has
been able to harness.
A major benefit of using the same technology to service almost
60,000 users on four different campuses is the solution’s ability
to accurately calculate usage and the KMSA solution has in its
first six months, shown significant savings for the university.
According to Marc Pillay, general operations manager at
Konica Minolta South Africa, UJ also required a solution that
offered a common good for its students, staff and the
environment and so a detailed electricity usage and emissions
report formed part of the tender process.
A major focus area for KMSA is minimising CO2 emissions and
reducing power consumption. Luckily for the environment, the
company’s bizhub MFDs use Simitri high definition
polymerised toners for low temperature fixing and are
equipped with an advanced sleep mode and energy-saving
technologies to significantly minimise energy consumption in
the office.
Our solution at UJ offers credible, monthly electricity usage
and emission reports, which are being used by individual
departments in their financial planning and by the university in
its reporting.
Importantly though, comments Voogt, harnessing the strength
of the solution is not just about the financial impact but the
influence it is having on the community. “One of the facilities
UJ offers the community are our law clinics and we have, for
example, set up dedicated MFDs on our Soweto campus in
the law clinic so that copies of documents can be made for the
cases reported at the law clinic.
Of significance too is KMSA’s client centric service approach,
which has taken our needs as clients seriously. The extent to
which top management was involved in the roll-out at our
institution attests to that.
At present, KMSA has support staff on all four the campuses
and also employs staff members within the university’s libraries
who assist students and visitors during the libraries 07:00 to
23:00 operating hours. To kick off the roll-out, KMSA provided
‘how-to-guides’, which were placed on UJ’s intranet and
prominently displayed posters for students’ reference to
supplement the basic operation of its MFDs.
Konica Minolta South Africa introduces
EveryonePrint, the freedom of
printing in the cloud
>>> Konica Minolta South Africa
has made EveryonePrint (EOP)
available to companies wanting to
establish a private hosted cloud
printing environment.
Mobile technology is quickly advancing to the point
where users can accomplish tasks on a smartphone
or tablet that once required a laptop or PC. This
computing power, combined with anywhere-anytime
connectivity, means mobile devices are becoming powerful
and pervasive business tools. An IDC study, for example,
predicts 75,5% of workers will have some form of mobile
connectivity and there will be more than 1.2 billion mobile
workers worldwide by 2013.
According to Mohammed Vachiat, product manager at
Konica Minolta South Africa, despite the rapidly increasing use
of smartphones and tablets in enterprises and other sectors,
printing infrastructure has, however, not kept pace with mobile
technology. Printing from mobile devices remains a challenge
and most users should take time to transfer documents from
mobile devices to a network connected PC or laptop by email
or thumb drive before printing. The result? Distracted staff, lost
productivity and last minute scrambles to print even the
simplest of documents.
IT managers and administrators should thus welcome the
versatile EOP functionality, that includes ‘follow-me’ printing
and mobile printing, without the need to manage any
applications on the client side. EOP also addresses the
following critical enterprise requirements in mobile printing:
security and control, ease of installation and flexibility.
EOP offers platform and device independent printing of office
related documents. Importantly, it is compatible with any brand
of smartphone or other mobile device. This allows a mobile
workforce to benefit from a new freedom and attractively
enhanced flexibility, as they gain instant access to printing
wherever they happen to be.
Mobile technology is quickly
advancing to the point where users
can accomplish tasks on a
smartphone or tablet that once
required a laptop or PC.

‘Follow-me’ printing ‘inside the cloud’ does not require users to
determine a certain output device in advance – they can make
this choice as they go along. Using the authentication
functionality, EOP can be adapted and configured for
employees and/or external users. Furthermore, guests also
enjoy the benefits of driverless printing and can easily generate
their own printouts by sending an email to a preconfigured
address or by uploading their documents via a web browser.
No software installation on the user’s mobile device is required.
Vachiat explains that EOP is a way to easily establish a private
cloud print solution in corporate environments and that the
product’s enhanced security features avoid unattended
printouts in the printer output tray. This also means that EOP
has the ability to save printing costs because sent but forgotten
print jobs will not be printed.
In addition, EOP results in eco-friendly reductions of paper and
energy consumption, IT friendly use of standard applications
to print from all platforms and is also user friendly. It also
facilitates accounting with straightforward integration into
existing accounting systems, such as Konica Minolta
South Africa’s Pcounter software.
Key features include:
n convenient driverless mobile printing;
n flexible print job submission via e-mail,
landing page or EOP printer driver;
n easy modification of basic job settings
during print job release;
n office file format support for mobile printing
– Word, Excel, PowerPoint, pdf, Web sites,
TXT and more;
n EOP printer driver support for unlimited
applications, such as Windows, Macintosh,
and Linux;
n access limitation, for example to known
users in the corporate network by
authentication; and
n print job release via PIN ID for anonymous
users.
Konica Minolta South Africa introduces world-class
desktop document management
software, PaperPort
>>> Konica Minolta South Africa has
introduced PaperPort, the world’s number
one desktop management software,
to the southern African market.
According to Mohammed Vachiat, product manager at
Konica Minolta South Africa, PaperPort is powerful,
green, and remarkably easy to use. Operational with
Microsoft Windows, PaperPort makes it simple to scan or
convert documents of every kind – paper, photos, forms,
electronic files and more - into accurate and searchable
industry standard PDFs, allowing users to visually organise
and manage documents, find information instantly, assemble
custom PDF documents with ease and even share documents
securely.
Information drives today’s businesses. When clients or
colleagues call with a question, you need to have the right
information at your fingertips. You can’t afford to waste time
searching through stacks of paper or trying to remember where
you saved a file. What if you could turn your paper documents
into searchable PDFs, store them all in one place and
organise, access, merge and share them directly from your
computer desktop? That’s what PaperPort is all about.
Features of the software include advanced PDF creation and
security, super compressed scanned colour documents,
professional scanning interface, unlimited scanner profiles,
MFP scanning and document routing as well as split desktop
and workspace bookmarks.
The power of PaperPort lies in its ability to increase
productivity. The software includes everything needed for easy,
effective document management. An advanced tabbed ribbon
interface logically groups features with clear text descriptions
so there’s no learning curve. A ‘Scan Now’ button lets users
scan documents with a single click.
PaperPort utilises the world’s most accurate optical character
recognition technology to ensure that all PDF image content
is searchable. This allows users to visually manage more than
150 document types and photo formats, as well as create
multiple folders at once by importing a list of folder names from
a text file.
With PaperPort, the number or size of files won’t slow users
down as it allows users to email super compressed scanned
colour PDF documents without worrying about file size
limitations.
Reduces waste and
conserves energy

Users can also reduce waste and conserve energy as they are
able to scan, convert, organise, repurpose and share PDF
documents across the enterprise. The software also supports
the stacking and unstacking of pages in documents so that
users can break documents up into individual pages and
reassemble them into new PDF files.
Additionally, PaperPort lets users manage and access their
documents in the cloud using web browsers, as well as free
apps for Apple and Google Android mobile devices.
Other benefits are the software’s ability to scan directly into
applications, such as Microsoft SharePoint for enterprise-wide
sharing and archival as well as the FormType feature, which
converts scanned paper forms into electronic forms that can
be filled out, saved and sent via email.
Users are also able to safeguard confidential information and
ensure compliance with government regulations regarding
document security via PaperPort’s advanced PDF security
features like passwords and encryption.
Konica Minolta South Africa
prints for charity at Africa Print 2012
>>> At the recently held
Africa Print 2012,
Konica Minolta South Africa (KMSA)
put the printed material generated
during its daily production hour, which
showcased its full production line of
digital equipment printing material
from start to finish, to very good use.
Leon Minnie, product manager: production systems at
Konica Minolta South Africa with Desré Murray,
CHOC business development manager
Konica Minolta South Africa produced high quality printed
material for the Childhood Cancer Foundation South
Africa (CHOC) over the three days of the show,
ultimately delivering 1,920 brochures (A3 double sided –
200gsm gloss), 11,520 DL flyers (double sided – 170gsm
gloss), 1,840 posters (A3 – 170gsm gloss), 18,000 business
cards (300gsm matt) and 4,500 letterheads (trimmed to A4 –
80gsm bond) to the foundation on the final day.
All material produced for CHOC
was printed, trimmed, creased,
folded and wrapped and
underwent the entire print
process – from submission,
workflow, calibration and colour
management, printing on
multiple devices and even using
off-line/ near-line finishing - with
great success.
Says Leon Minnie, product manager: production systems at
Konica Minolta South Africa, “Our mission at Africa Print 2012
was not just to distribute ‘pretty pictures’, as this results in a
huge amount of wastage and as general practice at these
shows, provides print clients with very little information of the
machine’s real capability and true quality. We decided rather
to find an alternative method to demonstrate our quality of
equipment, while also using it for a worthy cause and providing
the type of material that could be used by the organisation well
into the future. CHOC was in great need of marketing collateral
and we felt that this would be a very valuable project with which
to assist. By publicly demonstrating our complete belief in our
products, this idea also highlighted that KMSA is committed to
both innovation and the requirements of the printing industry.

Through using these finishing processes, we showed that
digital printing can be successfully creased, folded and
trimmed without cracking, providing printers with a high quality
finished product.
KMSA received the artwork from CHOC, which was supplied
in PDF and Adobe Illustrator formats. We used imposition
software to create templates for the business cards, DL flyers
and letterheads, which were then set up according to the
finishing machinery from IPEX – a Morgana Digi Fold Pro
(creaser and folder) and Morgana Card Plus business card
cutter with two different blade sets to accommodate not only
business cards but the DL flyers as well. IPEX also used a
programmable guillotine machine to trim the letterheads,
posters and brochures with ease and efficiency.
All of the colour machines were calibrated and FOGRA
certified to maintain colour consistency during the three days
and to verify if any colour fluctuation had taken place during
the show and to what degree. This is because the environment
at the show is far from ideal and solutions like this can
minimise time correcting colour and wastage. With our colour
management solution, colour consistency day to day and
month to month is possible, taking the guess work out of colour
manipulation and correction. It is also possible to obtain
uniformed colour across different printing processes, from wide
format to digital and even litho. We are happy to report that all
of the machines were consistent in productivity and colour,
both during the runs and day after day.”
Desré Murray, CHOC business development manager, states
that a contribution of this nature is significant and adds
immeasurable value to an organisation like CHOC.
“KMSA’s generous contribution was very well timed, as we had
run out of our brochures and did not have the budget to have
them printed. CHOC is very grateful for this donation and
believe that the high quality prints will serve us well far into the
future,” says Murray.
CHOC was in great need of
marketing collateral and we
felt that this would be a very
valuable project with which
to assist.
Konica Minolta South Africa also printed 3,125 black & white
booklets on 12,500 sheets for the Dullstroom Birds of Prey and
Rehabilitation Centre on the brand new B951 and B1250
machines. In total, the company printed more than 37,000 A4
images during its production hour at the 2012 Africa Print.
Konica Minolta South Africa
sprints ahead of the competition
>>> Konica Minolta South Africa (KMSA) has successfully defended its title as the
number one supplier of multifunctional printers (MFPs) in the local market, in both
colour and black & white product sales. This is according to an industry sales survey
by market data specialist infoSource, which shows MFP sales in the first half of 2012
According to Marianna Gdanis business unit manager at
Konica Minolta South Africa, total placements grew by
an astonishing 17% when comparing the first half of
2011 to the first six months of 2012. The black & white
placements grew by 13.4%, which is significant as this is
typically considered a mature market within the industry and
the colour placements grew by an incredible 24.8% during the
same period.
She adds that these figures are due to the company’s
sophisticated bizhub devices that provide the best value for
money for medium to large businesses in South Africa.
KMSA has proven its strong legacy and brand reputation in
the market and the continuous focus on client satisfaction has
paid off. The product and capabilities of the company’s
products and services, have propelled KMSA into an
unparalleled market position in terms of the ability to integrate
and customise business specific solutions, such as the
in-house developed Microsoft SharePoint connector that
embeds bizhub devices directly into SharePoint for a
tailor-made and automated workflow optimisation solution
– a market first.
The company is extremely pleased with the results and
regard the efforts and hard work from all employees highly.
Their energy and passion for the product, combined with
state-of-the-art devices that are underlined by tangible
sustainability technology are proving to be a winning concept
in this competitive market. Clients can be confident that they
are dealing with the leaders in both colour and black & white
technology.
During the first half of this year, KMSA was also awarded the
international Konica Minolta Distributor of the Year Award,
surpassing other territories across the globe (with the
exception of the US and Europe). It is the seventh year in
succession that KMSA has won this prestigious award,
outperforming more economically developed countries.
KMSA continuously investigates more areas where it can add
efficiency to a business and enhance the working
environments of its clients.

bizhub job wins
Seriti top digital printing award
>>> Seriti Printing, a Konica Minolta South Africa client, has been given the top award for
digital printing by Printing SA, formerly known as the Printing Industries Federation
of South Africa (PIFSA). The digital print job that garnered the award was printed on
a Konica Minolta bizhub PRO C6500 digital production device.
According to Avril Swart, digital printing manager at Seriti
Printing, the Pretoria-based production house has had
a bizhub PRO C6500 for five years and is especially
impressed by the consistent quality that it delivers.
Seriti Printing is extremely proud of their digital award.
Moreover though, the bizhub PRO C6500 has made a huge
impact on the flexibility of their business, the cost of a job and
the superb and reliable output of each digital print run.
The winning print job was printed
on a bizhub PRO C6500
For this reason, they have invested in Konica Minolta’s next
generation flagship model, the bizhub PRESS C8000, which
offers high image quality and definition that is almost equal to
offset printers.
Seriti Printing specialises in the printing of annual reports,
posters, magazines, brochures and advertising material for a
range of clients such as government, academic, banking and
numerous private businesses. Seriti highlights that it has
become important for the printing house to be able to offer
these clients a high-quality digital offering in addition to its litho
services. According to Swart, time, cost and job quality are the
three most significant factors for clients. The bizhub presses
allow us to address all these requirements. That is, our clients
are assured of a fast turnaround time at a low cost and at the
highest possible quality.
“Of course, the fact that Konica Minolta South Africa is a sound
business partner is critical too. Having the best machine with
no after-sales training or service renders the device ineffective.
We’d most certainly recommend Konica Minolta South Africa
and its service – which is instant and constant – and are really
looking forward to what the bizhub PRESS C8000 will deliver,
both for us and our clients,” concludes Swart.
Konica Minolta South Africa’s
17,678 trees counterbalance carbon emissions
>>> In line with its promise to run its business in the most sustainable way – from an
environmental, social and economic perspective - Konica Minolta South Africa (KMSA)
has been supporting South Africa’s national greening and food gardening social
enterprise, Food & Trees for Africa (FTFA), for five years and has most recently planted
in excess of 2,000 trees at impoverished schools in the Cape Town and Paarl regions.
Wavecrest Primary School learners
This brings the total number of trees donated by KMSA to
17,678 and illustrates its vow to taking proactive steps
against global warming.
According to KMSA employees, Carol Harris, Cape Town
branch secretary and Peter Gdanis, Paarl branch manager,
FTFA selected Caravelle Primary School, Hillside Primary
School, Wavecrest Primary School, Eisleben Road Primary
School, Mboniselo Primary School and Langabuya Primary
School to be the recipients of the indigenous and fruit trees.
KMSA employees got thoroughly involved with the planting of
the trees. Thereafter, the trees became the responsibility of
the teachers, learners and caretakers – however, KMSA
remain involved, both with the schools and the community.
The main purpose of indigenous or fruit trees is to provide
shade for the school children, to sit and play beneath during
the hot summer months – as well as their guardians as they
wait to fetch the children. They will of course also beautify the
school and its surroundings.
The partnership with FTFA began in 2008 when Konica Minolta
South Africa contributed 4,100 trees to Orange Farm, a large
informal settlement located approximately 45 kilometres from
Johannesburg. As a result of the success of the project and
the need to offset more carbon dioxide emissions, KMSA
committed to planting further trees in the Eastern Cape,
Limpopo, Northern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga,
Gauteng and Western Cape regions.

Learners at Hillside Primary School wear their hats made from recyclable materials to the tree planting ceremony.
The 17,678 trees have been distributed through FTFA’s Trees
for Homes initiative, a registered carbon offset programme
under the Carbon Protocol of South Africa. By taking travel,
electricity and paper usage into account, the FTFA online
carbon calculator provides a high level estimation of a
company’s annual carbon footprint as well as the number of
trees it will take to absorb that amount of carbon.
Konica Minolta South Africa
is taking proactive steps
against global warming
by planting trees at
impoverished schools.
During the recent planting at the schools in Cape Town and
Paarl, the gratitude and respect shown by the various
principals, teachers and learners was evident. It also
highlighted the importance of mother nature.
“As part of our corporate social investment initiative, we have
committed to the FTFA Carbon Offset programme in an effort
to further offset our carbon emissions and one of the best ways
to do this is by planting trees. In addition to absorbing carbon
dioxide, one of the most important green house gases, these
trees provide many other environmental and social benefits
such as preventing water runoff and erosion, settling the dust,
providing shade and shelter, lessening noise and beautifying
neighbourhoods,” says Alan Griffith, managing director,
Konica Minolta South Africa.
This initiative has proven to be so successful, that
KMSA has, in fact, reached carbon neutral status. The trees
will also be registered with the United Nations Billion Tree
programme, which already has 10 billion trees registered,
which amounts to more than one tree for each person on the
planet.
Taking a leaf from Konica Minolta South Africa’s
sustainability book
>>> While the concept of sustainable
development steadily receives
growing recognition, many
organisations still find it difficult to
take this business principle from an
abstract form and integrate it into
their planning and
measurement systems.
One local company, however, that has managed to
successfully weave sustainability – from an
environmental, social and economic perspective –
into the very fabric of its business practice, is Konica Minolta
South Africa (KMSA).
Laetitia Coetzer, special projects manager at Konica Minolta
South Africa states that the key to sustainability becoming a
priority for KMSA was to change the mindset of all staff
members so that they understood that sustainable business
practices encompass much more than just the environment.
The three interdependent elements of sustainability are the
economy, society and the environment - a business needs to
meet the requirements of all three to be considered
sustainable.
From an environmental point of view, KMSA has put a number
of initiatives into practice, which all contribute to its status as a
‘carbon neutral’ business, this aside from its environmentally
conscious products. The recycling programme is in place at its
Johannesburg based head office and sales branch and in
conjunction with Hands-on-Waste has resulted in less than one
third of the company’s total waste generated being taken to
the landfill.
Furthermore, Desco Electronic Recyclers, a preferred service
provider of KMSA, dismantles and recycles end-of-life
electronic equipment, with Certificates of Destruction issued
for 54,636 kg of equipment over the 2011/ 2012 financial year.
In order to use less fuel for travel, Coetzer states that it has
put effective and efficient route planning in place for all offices,
using functionalities available within its SAP ERP system. Due
to be launched nationwide in December 2012, the new mobility
solution will allow for a faster turnaround time on calls as our
engineers will also have immediate access to more detailed
information on the problem, including error codes and spares
needed, before they are dispatched, thereby removing any
diagnostic guess work on site and fewer site visits.

The organisation has also received final approval from Eskom
to subsidise a planned energy saving project, which
involves the replacement of conventional high-intensity
discharge (HID) fluorescent tubes with T5 linear fluorescent
lamps that employ a high performance aluminium reflector
system. All lighting at the company’s head office,
Johannesburg branch and respective warehouses has already
been replaced, resulting in a usage saving of 54.6kw,
according to an onsite inspection conducted by Eskom and
Galaxy Projects. In addition, an energy management system
has been installed by TST Power Utility Forensics, which will
provide a monthly comparison on consumption, power factor
and phase balancing.
What's more, KMSA’s corporate social initiative (CSI)
programme has reached new highs during the 2011/2012
financial year, with more than R1 million being donated to
the World Wide Fund for Nature’s (WWF) African Rhino
Programme and the conversion of a light commercial vehicle
into a mobile library, entrusted to The Edu-Care Foundation,
providing children who do not have access to books in their
schools and communities with the opportunity to improve their
literacy skills.
>>>
As part of its Arbor Day celebrations,
Konica Minolta South Africa supplied
vegetable seedlings to disadvantaged
schools and community projects
in the Johannesburg area.
KMSA’s Life Starter Programme, where the company pays all
school fees and related expenses on behalf of historically
disadvantaged learners identified in Grade 10, has seen
another successful year, assisting two Johannesburg students
and one learner in Port Elizabeth.
KMSA has also donated 3,000 trees, through the Food and
Trees for Africa programme in 2011, to the residents of Lotus
Gardens in Pretoria, Entokozweni in Nelspruit and
Thembalethu in George. These trees will provide other
environmental and social benefits, such as preventing water
runoff and erosion, providing shade and shelter and beautifying
the neighbourhoods. All of the trees donated have been
planted and Food and Trees for Africa has trained community
educators on how to look after these trees, basic climate
change, the benefits of trees and clean, green suburbs, as well
as the value of trees and how to plan and maintain this
wonderful natural resource.
KMSA is passionate about meeting and surpassing its social
and moral obligations. The company truly believes in doing
whatever is possible to ensure a sustainable future for South
Africa, at whatever level that might be.
Konica Minolta South Africa
wears green heart on sleeve
According to Laetitia Coetzer, special projects manager
at Konica Minolta South Africa, the company as well as
its Head Office and Johannesburg branch staff
sponsored more than 1,850 vegetable seedlings to schools
and charities with feeding schemes, helping these become
more self-sustainable. “We visited our beneficiaries just a
month after planting and the seedlings have flourished. It is
inspiring to see how excited the children are in nurturing these
plants and at the same time help to nourish a community,” she
says.
Recipients of the seedlings:
• Toekomsrus Primary School (Randfontein)
• Sparrow Ministries (Roodepoort)
• Project Feed the Children (Cloverdene Community)
• Martha’s Garden (Diepsloot)
• Tsepang Orphanage for Vulnerable Children (Princess
WWF and
Konica Minolta South Africa
continue the fight
against rhino
poaching
>>> Konica Minolta South Africa (KMSA)
is pleased to announce that it has
renewed its support of the World
Wide Fund for Nature’s (WWF)
African Rhino Programme for the
next year.
According to the World Wide Fund, KMSA’s substantial
financial donation to the programme over the past year
has helped in the South African rhino DNA index system,
namely RhODIS, contributing evidence to more than 400
investigative rhino poaching cases in South Africa.
It is heartening to see that this type of indisputable evidence is
a strong factor in some serious sentences being handed down
– including the two rhino poachers recently sentenced to a
collective 58 years in prison – something that we hope will act
as a deterrent to other would-be poachers.
Furthermore, the partnership between the WWF and KMSA
has been instrumental in support of the introduction of RhODIS
into Kenya, where a large percentage of the critically
endangered East African black rhino population resides. More
than 300 DNA forensic kits have been donated to support both
ongoing investigations and the collection of live rhino samples
for DNA profiling within the region.
Dr Joseph Okori, the head of WWF's African Rhino
Programme states that, while poaching prevention and
investigation remain key, addressing the demand for rhino horn
is also critical. “In line with this, we have begun to upscale our
efforts in addressing this side of the equation, in particular
creating a greater awareness of illegal trade concerns across
Asia.
This meant that KMSA’s contribution was also invested in
specialised micro-chipped scanners for the marking of both
rhinos and their horns. These kits have gone directly to special
operation units within government, but some are to be handed
over to Vietnam during the South Africa-Vietnam signing of a
bilateral memorandum of understanding that would see
strengthening of border and ports monitoring coupled with
improved information sharing.
We are certainly in a growth phase of our partnership with
KMSA and believe that this type of strong corporate
engagement can only lead to greater things for conservation.
We look forward to a long and healthy relationship with the
company and together, plan to continue supporting the
ongoing delivery on rhino horn DNA profiling, as well as
provide for the production and distribution of 600 forensic kits
for five Africa rhino range states, to improve both rhino
management and traceability, amongst additional objectives,”
concludes Dr Okori.
“Konica Minolta South Africa is passionate about the
preservation of the majestic rhino and based on the successes
seen over 2011 and 2012, has pledged to continue supporting
WWF’s programme into 2013. We look forward to seeing many
more conservation victories as well as the protection and
growth of the African rhino population,” says Griffith.

"The project, in terms of direct laboratory costs, is really
expensive and to be frank, we are quite desperate for basic
support funding – in large amounts. With an approximate
17,500 additional rhino to be profiled, the financial backing of
RhODIS is a core component of its success," says Dr Cindy
Harper, head of the Veterinary Genetics Laboratory.
A total of 171 rhinos were poached in the first 100 days of this
year. It's high time that these criminals are caught and placed
behind bars.
Dr Joseph Okori, head of WWF’s ARP, says “Konica Minolta
South Africa’s contribution strengthens South Africa’s ability to
help ensure the survival of the rhino and continues to be a
major source of rhinos for the rest of Africa.”
In light of these successes, WWF congratulates KMSA’s
sustained effort in addressing the poaching crisis. The
conservation organisation sees this as a clear sign of how
strategic corporate engagement can make a difference in
ensuring the survival of a highly threatened species like the
African rhino.
Over the past year, Konica Minolta
South Africa’s investment went into
supporting and achieving the
following:
n Specialised micro-chipped
scanners for rhino and horn marking
n Capacity building and training
n Presentation and peer review of
RhODIS application and
achievements
n Donation of over 300 DNA forensic
kits
n Support for RhODIS application in
Kenya
n Contribution to over 400
investigative cases in South Africa
Alan Griffith, managing director of Konica Minolta South Africa, hands over the cheque to Puleng Mosholi, corporate
relations officer: business development at the World Wide Fund for Nature’s (WWF) African Rhino Programme. The funds
donated go directly to the University of Pretoria’s Veterinary Genetics Laboratory, to assist in the running and further
development of RhODIS, a rhino DNA index system
has converted a light commercial vehicle
into a mobile library, providing
children who do not have access to
books in their schools and communities,
with the opportunity to improve their
literacy skills – a necessary tool to
function in society, find a good job and
as the imagination.
26 the hub 01/2013
Konica Minolta South Africa’s mobile library
brings literacy to rural schools
The fully kitted-out Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, purchased by
Konica Minolta South Africa from McCarthy Kunene in
Witbank, has been entrusted to The Edu-Care
Foundation, a non-profit organisation that through its R.E.A.D.
(Respect, Education, Attitude and Discipline) initiative assists
children in the foundation phase to improve their reading ability.
According to project initiator Laetitia Coetzer, special projects
manager at Konica Minolta South Africa, the mobile library is
the first of its kind and will service the Gauteng area, ranging
from the West Rand to the East Rand and even a school in
Hammanskraal. She adds that it will also function as a study
centre at certain rural area schools where there are no study
facilities.
Although projects such as the Mandela Day Library have set
up libraries using converted shipping containers at various
schools, the mobile library extends that work and adds a
unique element in that it can service up to 20 schools a month.
As a Bidvest Group company, KMSA has encouraged other
organisations within the group to take part in the project. For
this reason, Kolok sponsored the consumables for the printer
in the mobile library, Bid Financial Services has insured the
vehicle and Bidtrack will provide vehicle tracking, recovery and
fleet management services.
KMSA has also donated a sum of money to buy books and a
laptop to be used as a research facility for subjects such as
history, science and geography. With the help of one of its
suppliers it has also created cheerful artwork on the body of
the vehicle.
Achmat Dangor, chief executive of the Nelson Mandela
Foundation and champion of Mandela Day was present at the
recent handover. He praised the project as an initiative that,
through innovation, has created a solution to South Africa’s
current literacy problem. We believe there is always a remedy
and that businesses, government and civil society should focus
on solutions and not problems, something KMSA has done so
well.

Konica Minolta South Africa helps spread
festive season joy at Diepsloot day centre
>>> Konica Minolta South Africa (KMSA) together with The Edu-Care Foundation
brought some festive cheer to the babies, toddlers and preschoolers of
El-Shaddai Day Centre in the Diepsloot informal settlement.
Diepsloot pre-school development project leader, Patti
Hanley led the Edu-Care Foundation team - consisting
of founder, Daleen Havenga; office manager, Beverly
Peters; driver, Michael Petersen; and Florida Police Station
sergeant, Marcel Coutuers – in donating a large, two-metre tall
Christmas tree to the day centre.
“There was a sudden burst of laughter and raised excitedness
in the children’s voices when Marcel dressed up as Santa
Claus and surprised the children in their classrooms. He
handed each preschooler a gift bag from KMSA, filled with
yummy snacks and a juice, as well as a lovely book of fairy
tales,” says Laetitia Coetzer, special projects manager at
Konica Minolta South Africa, who attended this event with her
colleagues, Janine Ferreira, public relations officer and
Khomotso Mtimunye, risk director.
The day centre’s toddlers also received a gift bag filled with
goodies and an educational book, whilst the babies were spoilt
with a Purity hamper and a cuddly teddy.
“Much too soon it was time for the children’s afternoon nap and
for us to return to the office. With a last thank you, hugs and
numerous blowing of kisses we left, hoping that we made a
difference in the children’s heart, even if only for one day,” adds
Coetzer.
