If ever there was a fit for content management systems it’s in the publishing industry; both newspapers and magazines deal with massive amounts of content. Readership of magazines continues to flourish in Canada, with over 2,000 titles being published and read by over 25 million Canadians. Statistically 56% of Canadians read magazines each week. Newspapers continue to be consumed by Canadians with total daily circulation of about 5 million copies. That means that each day about one in five adult Canadians (18+) receives a daily newspaper, one of the highest ratios in the world. As we alluded to in the first article in this series, “Content is King”, and the news media are the Kings of Content—as a result the production and distribution of this content needs to be efficient and expedited. Magazines and newspapers must also address the needs of multilingual and multi-channel distribution of that content. To meet these requirements a new breed of content publishing systems is being developed. Joe Bachana, president of Database Publishing Consultants Inc. To read the previous articles visit Archived issues at www.canadianprinter.com We caught up with Bachana while attending the Henry Stewart DAM Symposium in New York (March 13-14), the new gathering place for the Seybold Seminar crowd, to get a read on some of the systems which publishers are relying on. “Magazines and newspapers have different content management needs based on their workflows and the lifecycle of the content itself,” states Bachana. “The shelf life of a news story might be quite ephemeral and only looked upon later for historical purposes. A magazine article—depending upon the brand—may have a much longer relevance and thus value over its lifespan. “In any case, there are a few key things one must look for in a content publishing system. The first is the channels of publication. If you’re looking for a system that supports publication in print, Web, or other medium, that’s very different from a Web-only solution. Most print workflow systems can seed the Web content management system with content, likely in XML format, but the all-purpose publishing solution is really just a concept at this point.” A number of software vendors are moving in that direction, and certainly a few publishers are investing in integrated print/Web content management strategies.
