There is nothing quite as exciting as the clear call of the trumpet or the mellow tones of the coronet. A good march would not be com- plete without the smear of the trombone. FRONT ROW: Tandberg, Karr, Op- dahl. BACK ROW: Cleveland, Sjoblom, Gabbert, Gunderson, Retzlaff, Beyer. 59 Reed instruments are a very im- portant part of the band. They are the instruments that play the many very delicate parts that the violin usually plays in the or- ches tra. In this group one can see the clarinets, saxophones, and a new type of instrument that takes the place of the oboe. FRONT ROW: Bitker, Hau en, Arm- strong, Gatheridge, BACK ROW': Peterson, Bogestad, Hanson, Schultz, Warren. The instrument that really has the beat is the bass drum. Another symbol of the brass band is the large bass horn, the cym- bals, horns, and snares. FRONT ROW: Opdahl, Johnson, Swan- son, Hoerner, Helgeson. BACK ROW: Scott, Odegaard, Helgeson, Charais, Pahan, Tvinnereim.

B R AS S SEXTET: Twyla Gunderson, Rodger Swanson, Earl Sjoblom, Jerry Helgeson, Dale Charais, Ralph Tandberg. Because they like to play, and learn more about music, some people that play different instruments have joined to- gether to form small ensembles, which is just one other way to build in tech- nique and reading power outside of the regular band rehearsal. Not only does this group have fun reading new music, they can relax and clown on certain times. Although some of the practice time is scheduled by Mr. Thor- son, most of their practice is done on their own. Throughout the year these small groups have an opportunity to play for such occasions as Parents’ Day, the Christ- mas concert, and during the assembly pro grams.
