Defeat and Victory.
Commenting on the results of
the recent election, the Nashville
Banner considers the defeat of
i Roger Sullivan, Democratic nominee
for senator from Illinois, a
Democratic victory, notwithstanding
the support of the national
administration and the
of Boise Penrose, Republican nominee
for senator from Pennsylvania,
a defeat for the Republican
party.
The Banner holds that the election
of Sullivan would have
placed a burden on the Democratic
party that it would be em
barrassing and difficult for it to
carry in the next campaign, and
that the of Penrose
likewise places a load on the Republicans
that no party seeking
preferment should desire to carry, i
After expressing these very un- -
usual views, the Banner summur-- 1
izes by remarking that "contrary
as it may seem to the temporizing
politician, and as contradictory as
it may be to his creed, the thinking
man who cares to analyze the
situation will iind in these results
for the Democrats victory in defeat
and for the Republicans defeat
in victory."
There are many, both Democrats
and Republicans, who on
second thought, will agree with
the Banner. Sullivan would have
been a liability to the Democratic
party, as Penrose is to the Republican.
The election results in llli-noi- s
and Pennsylvania reduced
the Democratic majority in the
United States Senate, but they
will prove far more disastrous to
the Republicans when they again
go before the people with Penrose
a part of their platform.
Verily is there defeat in victory
and victory in defeat. New St.
Arkansas Diamonds.
For the same reason that a
prophet is not without honor save
in his own country, it may be said
that the opportunities and advantages
in any section arc rarely
ever as keenly appreciated at
home as abroad. For several
years the papcis have been advertising
tlie diamond fields in
Pike County, Arkansas, vet to
thifc day the people of Arkansas
have apparently been skeptical
about the genuineness of the
claims for these diamond mines.
However, recognition lias been secured
from outside sources, as will
be seen from the following article
appearing in a recent issue of I'op-.ula- r
Mechanics, which says:
"Pike County, Arkansas, has
several diamond mines which are
being operated on a commercial
basis. One day a poor tanner,
living near Murl'reeshoro, while
sitting on a rock brooding over
his troubles, had his attention attracted
by a small pebble glistening
in the sunlight. Curious as to
its nature, he picked it up and
carried it to the town merchants;
on being forwarded to a Little
Hock jeweler it was learned that
the stone was in reality a white
diamond of excellent quality,
weighing 4 -2 karats, and in a
few weeks the farmer sold his
property for .3J),000.
"This was the start in Pike
County's mining industry. A
typical diamond bearing formation
of several acres was found
to exist where the first stone was
picked up. .Since the beginning
of operations one company has removed
1,400 stones, with an aggregate
weight of fr0 karats. The
exact yield of the other mines is
not known, the results having
been kept secret, but it is approximated
at .'1,000 diamonds of unknown
weight. The largest stone
no far discovered and officially
reported weighed S 2 karats.
While the sizes are no) unusual,
the quality is saitl to be exceptional,
many of the diamonds being
as flawless as arc ordinarily
found. The fields, moreover, are
said to he relatively rich. The
celebrated Dc Peers and Kiniber-l- y
mines of Africa grade 31 karats,
approximately, and are as
rich as any in tlie world, while
the first 'pipe' uncovered in Arkansas
has tested 20 karats. The
grading is computed in the number
of karats recovered from 100
loads of earth, each amounting to
Mi cubic feet.
"The plants now running at the
Arkansas fields are, however, not
large, and the work is yet in only
the earliest stage of development.
The digging lias been limited to
shallow excavations covering sev
eral acres, and the mining so tar
done is more in the nature of a
test."
Convict Labor to Stop.
Kinitl arrangements for the
withdrawal of the Star Clothing
Company from the prison shops
the latter part of February were
made at a meeting oi the State
Board of Prison Inspection today.
The linn employs 1,000 convicts,
each of whom earns for the State
"." cents a flay. It is expected
that for the time being other contractors
will supply work tor tlie
hulk of the men now employed by
lite clothing company.
When the Legislature assembles
in .lanuary it will be confronted
with the proposition of providing
work for ahout 2,400 convicts.
Most of the contracts will expire
at the close of the present year,
and the State Board of Prison Inspectors
has no authority to enter
into new ones. The last of the
"isling contracts will expire next
The earnings of the penitentiary
now amount to about SrUS.OOO a
