<strong>The</strong> driver looked from side to side nervously. Dane<br />

noticed he was sweating. “I don’t know about this, Mr.<br />

Dane. I can’t do this again. I’ve had nightmares ever<br />

since....” He trailed off, and made a vague whimpering<br />

sound.<br />

Dane closed his eyes and fought to maintain his temper.<br />

He checked to make sure all the windows were closed, then<br />

spoke in as even a voice as possible. “Is the car in ‘park,’<br />

Pell?”<br />

“Y-yes, sir. Yes, it is.”<br />

“Good.” Dane leveled the revolver at the back of the seat<br />

and pulled the trigger. He was amazed at how loud it was.<br />

He put one finger into his ear and wiggled it back and forth.<br />

Shit, he thought, that really hurt.<br />

He looked through the window to see Pell slumped over<br />

and unmoving. “I hate having to do things myself,” Dane<br />

said out loud to himself.<br />

It occurred to him that there were demons that could drive<br />

as well as humans, and they would have no qualms about his<br />

activities. Even if they did, they would have no choice in the<br />

matter. And he had to employ a new driver, anyway. Well,<br />

then, a demon it was. He also realized that he could probably<br />

get them to do some of Sweeney’s surveillance work as<br />

well, and for free at that. He pursed his lips and gave a satisfied<br />

nod. <strong>The</strong>n he opened the door of the car and walked<br />

into the park, calling for his imaginary dog.<br />

Mikael was beginning to think it was not such a bad<br />

assignment. He rolled into the lower Haight at a leisurely
