Magick: Aleister Crowley began the practice of adding a “k”<br />

to the end of this word to distinguish ceremonial (“serious”)<br />

magick from stage (“play”) magic. Lots of other people now<br />

do likewise (including, obviously, moi).<br />

Melungeon: A unique, distinctive ethnic group consisting of<br />

a mixture of European, sub-Saharan African, and Native<br />

American ascestry, found in the Southeastern United States.<br />

Maori: <strong>The</strong> native peoples of New Zealand.<br />

Modal Monarchian: <strong>The</strong> belief that the three persons of the<br />

Trinity aren’t distinct “persons” at all, but one person who<br />

interacts with humanity in three forms. Modalism was<br />

declared a heresy by the early, church, but lots of people<br />

nowadays think it’s just splitting hairs, since the Trinity is a<br />

mysterious, incomprehensible doctrine anyway.<br />

Monks: Men who are vowed to a dedicated religious life,<br />

who live removed from the world in monasteries.<br />

Monstrance: A liturgical “device” that houses a consecrated<br />

host in such a way that it is viewable and may be adored. A<br />

monstrance can be anywhere from six inches to several feet<br />

tall, containing near its top a container designed to hold the<br />

host in a respectful container. One side of this is usually glass<br />

so that the host is visible. A monstrance is usually placed on<br />

an altar so that people may kneel and reverence it, although<br />

it is sometimes also carried in procession.<br />

Nephilim: A race of giants, mentioned in two places in the<br />

Hebrew Scriptures (Genesis 6:1-4 and Numbers 13:32-33),<br />

said to be the offspring of angels (or demons) and human<br />

women.<br />

Oil stock: A small, cylindrical liturgical device, about the size<br />

of a large man’s thumb. Usually made of metal, it has a twist-
