ordination passes on the special “mojo” that allows
ordained clergy to confect the sacraments, available only to
someone who possesses this valid and unbroken succession.
Archetypes: In Plato’s philosophy, archetypes are the ideal
forms from which things on earth derive their reality, and of
which their earthly analogs are but degraded reflections.
C.G. Jung saw them as universal constants in the human
imagination (or “collective unconscious”) which express
themselves through human beings and influence our
thoughts and actions.
Aspergill: A round ball on the end of a stick used to flick
holy water. Nice ones are made of precious metal, and come
with a matching bucket for the holy water.
Astral Plane: In neo-Platonic, esoteric, and Theosophical theology,
this is a higher level of existence where spiritual realities
are primary. One can travel out of body to the astral
plane to seek information from the Akashic records, or to
meet with other spiritual beings and adepts (as in “I’ll meet
you on the Astral”).
Baruch hato adonai: The beginning of many Hebrew
prayers, including Sabbath prayers. Literally, “Blessed are
you, Lord…”
Blavatsky, Madame: A Russian psychic who made her fame
in the Spiritualist movement at the end of the 19th century.
Together with a fellow Spiritualist, Colonel Henry Alcott,
she founded the Theosophical Society, a syncretistic movement
that espoused the unity of all religions and the brotherhood
of man.
The Book of the Law: The primary scripture of Thelema,
“brought through” or channeled by Aleister Crowley. The
“messenger” who gave the book to Crowley was a spiritual
entity identified as Aiwass.
