In addition, fourteen <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> tree species were found both <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> village forest reserves and <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>land</strong> use<br />

<strong>types</strong>, <strong>in</strong>cud<strong>in</strong>g agr<strong>of</strong>orests and fallow <strong>land</strong>s. These <strong>in</strong>cluded Millettia usaramensis, Dialium holtzii, Ficus<br />

thonn<strong>in</strong>gii, De<strong>in</strong>bollia borbonica, Diospyros mespiliformis and trees <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> genus Albizia.<br />

The presence <strong>of</strong> East Usambara endemic and threatened plant species <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> village forest reserves shows<br />

that <strong>the</strong>se forests play an important role <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> conservation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> region‟s unique and threatened biodiversity.<br />

In addition, <strong>the</strong> trees <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Village Forest Reserves are used by <strong>the</strong> local people for various purposes, e.g. for<br />

timber, poles, local medic<strong>in</strong>es and fruits. This is discussed <strong>in</strong> detail <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Resource Use Survey <strong>in</strong> section six<br />

<strong>of</strong> this report.<br />

The study also recorded several valuable species <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>land</strong> <strong>cover</strong> <strong>types</strong> than <strong>the</strong> village forest reserve. For<br />

<strong>in</strong>stance, some important timber tree species, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Milicia excelsa, were recorded <strong>in</strong> fallow <strong>land</strong>s,<br />

agr<strong>of</strong>orest plots and mixed farm<strong>in</strong>g areas. The trees are ei<strong>the</strong>r sold outside <strong>the</strong> village or utilized by <strong>the</strong><br />

villagers. Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore, <strong>the</strong> existence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se tree species outside <strong>the</strong> forest reserves shows that also <strong>the</strong> nonreserved<br />

areas <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>land</strong>scapes support valuable tree resources. Hence, while plann<strong>in</strong>g conservation<br />

strategies, <strong>the</strong> management <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> tree resources outside <strong>the</strong> forest reserves should be addressed.<br />

2.4.2 O<strong>the</strong>r potential plant resources<br />

Food and cash crops were recorded <strong>in</strong> several <strong>land</strong> use <strong>types</strong> <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g agr<strong>of</strong>orest, mixed farm<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

monoculture and fallow <strong>land</strong>. Plant resources which were mentioned by <strong>the</strong> respondents to be used for food<br />

ranged from tubers and stems to fruits and seeds. The plants used for food <strong>in</strong>cluded cassava (Manihot<br />

esculenta), sugarcane (Saccharum <strong>of</strong>f<strong>in</strong>acirum), maize (Zea mays) and banana (Musa sp.). Cash crops<br />

cultivated <strong>in</strong>cluded cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum), c<strong>in</strong>namon (C<strong>in</strong>namonum sp.), clove and sugarcane.<br />

Most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> food and cash crops co-existed with o<strong>the</strong>r plants, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g timber trees grow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> agr<strong>of</strong>orests<br />

and fallow <strong>land</strong>s. The local people also used <strong>the</strong> tree resources <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se areas to get <strong>different</strong> products, such<br />

as firewood and timber.<br />
