Appendix 6. Def<strong>in</strong>ition <strong>of</strong> key <strong>land</strong> use <strong>types</strong> used <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> survey<br />

Agr<strong>of</strong>orest – <strong>land</strong> which is hav<strong>in</strong>g mixed crops (subsistence crops (such as maize, oranges etc)<br />

and/or cash crops such as cardamom, c<strong>in</strong>namon etc) plus timber tree species.<br />

Bush<strong>land</strong> – an area <strong>of</strong> predom<strong>in</strong>antly <strong>in</strong>digenous herbs, shrubs and sapl<strong>in</strong>gs, less than 2 m <strong>in</strong> height.<br />

Eucalyptus – commercial plantation <strong>of</strong> Eucalyptus trees.<br />

Fallow – <strong>land</strong> which was previously cultivated and is currently left unattended/without crops for up to 3<br />

years.<br />

Forest – <strong>land</strong> which has been dom<strong>in</strong>ated by <strong>in</strong>digenous trees and <strong>the</strong> <strong>land</strong> should be set aside<br />

purposely for certa<strong>in</strong> activities such as protection or production purposes.<br />

Human settlement – an area predom<strong>in</strong>antly <strong>cover</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> houses, roads, shops <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> cleared<br />

area around <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

Mixed farm<strong>in</strong>g – <strong>land</strong> which is occupied by two or more crops such as maize, cocoyam and<br />

sugarcane.<br />

Monoculture (S<strong>in</strong>gle crop field) – <strong>land</strong> which is dom<strong>in</strong>ated by one type <strong>of</strong> crop such as cassava,<br />

sugarcane, cocoyams etc<br />

Old fallow – as above but for more than 4 years.<br />

Plantation – <strong>land</strong> dom<strong>in</strong>ated by planted timber tree species such as teaks, Eucalyptus, P<strong>in</strong>es etc<br />

Tea estates – <strong>land</strong> which is mostly dom<strong>in</strong>ated by tea fields with scattered forest/tree patches.<br />

Tea field – monoculture <strong>of</strong> tea plants.<br />

Where two <strong>land</strong> <strong>cover</strong> <strong>types</strong> are listed it <strong>in</strong>dicates that <strong>the</strong> plot <strong>in</strong>cludes a proportion <strong>of</strong> both <strong>land</strong><br />

<strong>cover</strong>s.<br />
