were actually appo<strong>in</strong>ted. In addition, Mr Ruhemann was<br />

still work<strong>in</strong>g as a part-time consultant. Today <strong>the</strong> establishment<br />

is twelve, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g technical grades, craftsmen and<br />

student tra<strong>in</strong>ees under <strong>the</strong> Government Temporary <strong>Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g</strong><br />

Scheme (paragraph 24).<br />

Also as a result <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Weaver Report, <strong>the</strong>re was an immediate<br />

<strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> staff and activities <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> National<br />

Gallery Scientific Department and a change <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> functions<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scientific Advisory Committee, which, orig<strong>in</strong>ally set<br />

up to advise <strong>the</strong> Scientific Adviser, became <strong>in</strong> 1951 <strong>the</strong><br />

direct advisers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Trustees on <strong>the</strong> scientific and technical<br />

problems <strong>of</strong> conservation. The present establishment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Scientific Department, all grades <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Mr Garry<br />

Thomson, <strong>the</strong> Scientific Adviser, is five.<br />

(b) Tate Gallery<br />

The Tate Gallery also equipped a conservation studio and<br />

<strong>the</strong> chief restorer, Mr Slabczynski, was appo<strong>in</strong>ted <strong>in</strong> 1955.<br />

An additional restorer was appo<strong>in</strong>ted <strong>in</strong> 1956 and an assistant<br />

<strong>in</strong> 1958. Today <strong>the</strong> establishment is thirteen, all grades,<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g two tra<strong>in</strong>ee students under <strong>the</strong> Government Temporary<br />

<strong>Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g</strong> Scheme (paragraph 24).<br />

(e) Victoria and Albert Museum<br />

In 1958 <strong>the</strong> Victoria and Albert Museum consolidated <strong>the</strong><br />

workshops <strong>of</strong> all its departments, to form one department<br />

under Mr N. Brommelle, who was appo<strong>in</strong>ted Keeper <strong>in</strong><br />

February 1960. The section deal<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> conservation<br />

<strong>of</strong> pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs and draw<strong>in</strong>gs today has a staff <strong>of</strong> seven.<br />

(d) National Galleries <strong>of</strong> Scotland<br />

The National Galleries <strong>of</strong> Scotland have an establishment <strong>of</strong><br />

five for pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs and draw<strong>in</strong>gs, <strong>the</strong> Chief Restorer work<strong>in</strong>g<br />

on a part-time basis with four full-time members <strong>of</strong> staff.<br />

(e) National Maritime Museum<br />

The National Maritime Museum has an establishment <strong>of</strong><br />

three <strong>in</strong> its conservation studio for pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />

(f) British Museum Pr<strong>in</strong>t Room<br />

The workshop for <strong>the</strong> conservation <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ts and draw<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

attached to <strong>the</strong> British Museum Pr<strong>in</strong>t Room has an establishment<br />

<strong>of</strong> five. All <strong>the</strong> department workshops <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> British<br />

Museum can turn to <strong>the</strong> British Museum Research Laboratory<br />

for advice about conservation problems which may <strong>in</strong>volve<br />

fundamental scientific research.
