TRAINING IN THE CONSERVATION OF PAINTINGS<br />

<strong>the</strong> apprenticeship. This is not equally true <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> scientist, or <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> conservator <strong>of</strong> objects o<strong>the</strong>r than pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs. Moreover, like all<br />

forms <strong>of</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, this fragmented programme can, given outstand<strong>in</strong>g<br />

masters and outstand<strong>in</strong>g students, and some fur<strong>the</strong>r years <strong>of</strong><br />

experience, ultimately produce first-class restorers even <strong>of</strong> pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />

But it is not what we would recommend as <strong>the</strong> ideal course qualify<strong>in</strong>g<br />

a student for a certificate <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>iciency <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> restoration <strong>of</strong><br />

pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs and draw<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />

53. Our visits have confirmed our view that <strong>the</strong> ideal specialised<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g must take place over at least four years <strong>in</strong> an <strong>in</strong>stitute <strong>of</strong><br />

conservation, with <strong>the</strong> student, as soon as he can do so without<br />

danger, perform<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly difficult tasks <strong>in</strong> close association<br />

with a skilled restorer who is himself work<strong>in</strong>g on varied and high<br />

quality material; and that his <strong>the</strong>oretical and background <strong>in</strong>struction<br />

should be obta<strong>in</strong>ed dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> same period.<br />

Pattern <strong>of</strong> <strong>Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g</strong><br />

54. The k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> scheme which emerges from <strong>the</strong> forego<strong>in</strong>g considerations<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> light <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong> evidence is:<br />

(a) Basic Course<br />

For <strong>the</strong> period before entry to <strong>the</strong> Advanced Course, <strong>the</strong>re is<br />

general agreement that a m<strong>in</strong>imum <strong>of</strong> three years satisfactory<br />

education result<strong>in</strong>g ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> a university degree <strong>in</strong> any subject, a<br />

Dip.A.D. or any o<strong>the</strong>r equivalent, or a period <strong>in</strong> a workshop,<br />

would be acceptable provid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> all cases that <strong>the</strong> student is<br />

able to satisfy <strong>the</strong> authorities by <strong>in</strong>terview and appropriate tests<br />

as to his natural aptitude for <strong>the</strong> work. But it is generally felt<br />

that some specialised conservation tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g also should be available<br />

before entry to <strong>the</strong> Advanced Course for those who are<br />

attracted to this pr<strong>of</strong>ession at school-leav<strong>in</strong>g age. Such specialised<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, which would probably consist <strong>of</strong> a qualify<strong>in</strong>g year correspond<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to <strong>the</strong> foundation year at an art school followed by a<br />

regular two year course <strong>of</strong> practical and <strong>the</strong>oretical work, might<br />

reasonably exempt <strong>the</strong> student from one or perhaps two years <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> advanced course.<br />

(b) Advanced Course<br />

For those with no previous specialised tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, this should be a<br />

five years course. The first year would probably be an <strong>in</strong>troduction<br />

to <strong>the</strong> techniques <strong>in</strong>volved, from which those who attended<br />

<strong>the</strong> basic course at (a) above would automatically be exempt on<br />

production <strong>of</strong> a certificate <strong>of</strong> satisfactory attendance. The four<br />
