(b) Courses for Students<br />

(1) The Courtauld Institute - Technology Department<br />

A two-year postgraduate course lead<strong>in</strong>g to a certificate <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Institute is given for two or at most three students a<br />

year <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Technology Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Courtauld<br />

Institute. The Institute was founded <strong>in</strong> 1931 as an <strong>in</strong>stitute<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> London for <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

history <strong>of</strong> European art.<br />

The Technology Department was founded <strong>in</strong> 1933.<br />

Among its facilities is a laboratory for <strong>the</strong> conservation<br />

and scientific <strong>in</strong>vestigation <strong>of</strong> works <strong>of</strong> art. Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

pre-war years postgraduate research was its ma<strong>in</strong> activity;<br />

and when <strong>the</strong> Courtauld Institute re-opened after <strong>the</strong><br />

war students were accepted for a regular tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g course<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> conservation and scientific <strong>in</strong>vestigation <strong>of</strong> pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />

The students <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Technology Department have<br />

access to all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute's facilities, <strong>the</strong> library, photographic<br />

collections and <strong>the</strong> slide library.<br />

(2) Gateshead Technical College<br />

A two-year course started at <strong>the</strong> Shipley Art Gallery <strong>in</strong><br />

1967 with three students. It has been transferred to<br />

Gateshead Technical College. The College unlike <strong>the</strong><br />

Gallery is recognised by <strong>the</strong> DES as an <strong>in</strong>stitute <strong>of</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>r<br />

education and thus is able to obta<strong>in</strong> LEA grants for<br />

its students. Teachers and students work on material from<br />

<strong>the</strong> Shipley Art Gallery and o<strong>the</strong>r collections <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

locality, <strong>in</strong> close relation with <strong>the</strong> Gallery. Students may<br />

be school leavers or graduates. Nei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong><br />

staif nor <strong>the</strong> accommodation, nor <strong>the</strong> supply <strong>of</strong> first-class<br />

material to work on, is considered by <strong>the</strong> College authorities<br />

to be adequate to provide <strong>the</strong> advanced tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g which<br />

would lead to a f<strong>in</strong>al certificate <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>iciency (see paragraph<br />

55).<br />

Students at <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir course are exam<strong>in</strong>ed by an<br />

external exam<strong>in</strong>er from <strong>the</strong> Courtauld Institute <strong>of</strong> Art<br />

and <strong>the</strong>y receive a certificate from <strong>the</strong> Technical College,<br />

but <strong>the</strong>y are expected to spend one or two more years at<br />

a more advanced course or under supervision at some<br />

museum or gallery before reach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> standard <strong>of</strong> a f<strong>in</strong>al<br />

qualification. A third year is now proposed, not as a f<strong>in</strong>al<br />

year qualify<strong>in</strong>g for an award, but as a prelim<strong>in</strong>ary year<br />

giv<strong>in</strong>g an opportunity for classes <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> necessary back-<br />
